No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

Would Sony be looking into this to put this on the PS4? Or are they going to go with Everquest?

Everquest is first party, this is not. No reason they cannot have both, unless the devs are not interested.

Don't forget that JD2: The Movie was a timed 360 exclusive, so they had a established relationship with MS too, but still weren't chosen for the ID@ program...

Very true, but this was what they had to say about MS last:

Sean Murray (Hello games)

“It’s difficult to generalise because everyone has a different situation,” he stressed. “Joe Danger has been really successful for us but it’s really tough out there for all developers. But what I can say is that on PC, iOS and PSN, you can just publish your own game

.“That’s great for indies, but it’s not how it is on 360, and even since then, Microsoft have taken some amazingly bad decisions with closing Windows Phone and Windows 8 to developers. They have a huge opportunity to get things right with the next Xbox. We’re seeing so many devs moving to iOS and PC

.“We’ve had an amazing experience releasing Joe Danger Touch. Apple are so different to work with, and I think they know the value of making a platform that developers find attractive because they’re doing incredibly well from now having thousands of developers making apps for iOS.

“Microsoft really need to see that closing their platforms is a real mistake. It will sideline them from the best indie developers and the most interesting games.”

Thjs interview was done in june so allot could have changed by then, but who knows what kind of progress MS might have made with indies/ID since then.

Its also worth noting that Joe Danger is coming to the Vita which was announced pretty recently. I will give you one guess as to who most likely signed that deal.

I personally hope everyone gets to play it honestly, though I would most likely play it on PS4.

Wow this looked really good. What kind of game is it? And what plattforms will it be coming to?

This game could have a lotof potential. ITs early, but with enough resources invested in it, it could be a big deal. Looks like a open world sci-fi RPG.

Sony might want to look into this thing

Uh, maybe my Internet message board dictionary is failing me, but I don't see how Sony or Microsoft offering to fund or publish the game in exchange for exclusivity is a "money hat." When a big partner offers to fund a small developer's project that is called "publishing."

Offering a third party publisher an overly large sum of money in order to make up for lost revenue on other platforms in exchange for exclusivity is a money hat.

Of course a 4 person team making a game like this will be looking for bigger funding. And of course they would strongly consider going exclusive if the math works and they have a good relationship with that platform holder. That's not a money hat. LOL. That's business.

PC is still the place to be for Indie games. Even the most obscure titles reach over a million sales.

Yes, PC is the place for indie games, but you can probably count on one hand the number of indie games that have sold 1 million copies. Probably just Minecraft and Meatboy really. Suggesting that even the most obscure titles get over a million sales is silly.

...most indie games, even on PC, don't even make profit. There's no safe platform for indie games -- it's a huge risk regardless. I agree that PC is a good place for indie games, though.

I'd rather this followed the Minecraft model and stayed on PC for the initial launch tbh (even putting out an alpha release). These types of games thrive on developing a community and rapid patch releases.

One hand? Have you heard of Thomas was alone? Approaching the million seller limit. Binding of Isaac did it without a bundle. Star Citizen? Mount & Blade? Terraria? Hotline? FTL?

Starbound released the other day and is already getting close.

I have to reach to find games that haven't crossed that barrier.

I love how you can just hop in your ship, take off and fly straight out of the atmosphere. I keep watching the trailer and even this small glimpse is absolutely breathtaking.

IIRC you could do this in Starglider 2, and I'm pretty sure you could in one of the Mercenary games & Frontier.

Some indie games have done quite well for themselves. It's just that numbers aren't easy to pull up unless companies divulge them and keep them up to date. Plus since there's so many indies, there's a plethora of failed indie stories. That doesn't mean that titles don't break a million. A quick google turned up a few I've never even heard of claiming to have done so.

It really all depends on if you have caught lighting in a bottle, and if you can stay up long enough to go viral. Then you have a Minecraft level indie. If they have created a Freespace-like, Freelancer-like, space exploration\combat, base building, resource gathering game, where you can get in a ship and fly from the surface of a planet into space, and back, and combat...other players online...ohhh.

Sony buys out team...

Rename the game it to Colony Wars: Omega...

Releases it in late 2014 or early 2015....

....

Profit?

Day 1, no doubt about it

But can they pull it off? Joe danger was a good and polished game but going from that to this is a huge stretch

There are lots of over-ambitious games that never launched

To NeoGaf funding a game is looked down upon and is considered a "money hat". Some recent examples include Titanfall, Bayonetta 2, and Crimson Dragon. It's safe to say no way would CD have existed without Microsoft funding it. Titanfall most likely was a huge investment and an exclusivity deal helped recoup some of the funds they spent making the game. No one else was interested in funding a Bayonetta sequel. Exclusive agreements only help games be made, people who get angered over it need to think more about why a developer might want an agreement.

Titanfall seems like an absurdly awful example. It's being published by fucking EA and the developers didn't even know it was going to be exclusive. Titanfall is the absolute definition of moneyhat.

EA spent a lot of money on the game and getting more funds helps the game move forward and most likely added to the budget of the game itself. The game could have potentially been less polished without the MS funds. I'm sure EA is very happy with the agreement.

So since this is like an MMO, when they say the universe is "procedurally generated", they mean once and once alone right? Like I can't restart my own procedurally generated universe, I have to exist in one of the already generated online universes that has been explored by others?

EA needs money for development? you're kidding right?

Their projects have a set budget like anyone else's, and probably go over budget all the time. Sometimes there's only so much money a company is willing to put into something before cuts have to be made.

Crimson Dragon and Bayonetta 2 I'll give you, but Titanfall is 100% a moneyhat.

It seems like Hello Games havent even talked to console makers until this week anyway so I dont think they have taken any sides just yet.

I hope the reveal gets them some buzz, Some financial backing and they can put it on everything that can run it.

Commit to at least a PC version and I bet they could get a nice chunk of change doing a kickstarter.

I can almost guarantee Hello Games would get more money with fewer strings attached through crowd funding.

Just don't adopt a one-off pre-funded model. Follow a long-term funding model letting players tastefully add names to the procedural database and vote on stretch goals.

You can bet they don't need MS money for that. And the game was created with PS3/4 version in mind.

They don't have an X1 dev kit according to the recent ID@ list...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=728134

Massive oversight by MS...
I should say that doesn't include every ID@Xbox dev, just ones releasing titles very soon.

Going to finally buy Joe Danger 2 and throw some money their way. If it is only four people, I'd guess they have enough financial stability from past successes to make whatever game they want without signing some exclusive deal. If you're very excited about this game, I'd probably urge you to buy their past games to support them financially. Joe Danger 1 and Touch are great, and from the demo I played, Joe Danger 2 is good as well.

I do wonder if they are going to even bother with consoles at all because the whole alpha release/early access thing would make a lot of sense here.

This game from a short promo trailer already shows more promise than Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen combined.

Sign me up.

Am I the only one who feels there's not enough information about this game yet to get too excited? I mean, I would even go so far as to say "It will be great if they deliver on their promises"... except there are no real promises.

I am really excited for this but will this time tamp down my anticipation after X: Rebirth was such a fail. I can't take that disappointment again about epic space games!

Edit: Does this seem a bit like the extension of the MIRROR MOON concept? Just with space battles?

Actually right now, next-gen consoles are the place for indies, not much competition and great exposure since there are so few games.

Created with PS3/4 in mind? Where is that from(source)? I'm highly doubtful that this game will show up on the current (last) gen platforms.

Edit: Cholel quote apparently about Titanfall, didn't realize that when I quoted him.

Starbound released the other day and is already getting close.

I have to reach to find games that haven't crossed that barrier.
I'm confused here by several things.

1. How can you tell how many copies of Starbound have been sold? Is there a counter I'm not aware of?

2. How many copies has Hotline sold? It was the first one I tried to look up, and the only information I found mentioned 300,000 copies in Februrary, so it may be past a million copies by now, but where is this information publicized?

3. I'm quite confused by you saying you have to reach to think of such games. Without reaching at all, you can look at the top 100 indie game sellers on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Indie/). How many of those games have sold more than a million copies?

1. How can you tell how many copies of Starbound have been sold? Is there a counter I'm not aware of?

Just the concurrent player count. They're approaching 100,000.

I believe you can estimate that the total sales of a newish game is 10 times its concurrent player count. At least that's what I've read several times over the years.

I'm not sure why some of you are concerned about a million copies sold though. Smaller independent games typically don't cost much and they don't need anywhere near that for a healthy profit.

Anyone can publish apps and games to WP and Windows 8 though...

No idea honestly, I have never tried to develop a game for either platform so I dont have any info on it. Im guessing they tried doing so in order to make such a statement.

Some of this ID box stuff seems like it could hurt MS for teams that already have deals in place with PC/Sony, or simply dont have the resources to develop for 2, or 3 platforms at once.

No info about this game but this trailer.... maybe it was always Colony Wars: No Man's Sky

The game looks like it would really bode well with the PC community
