No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

I'm honestly surprised there's so much hype for this. We know next to nothing except that the universe is randomized.

The art style is incredible too. Looks exactly like a universe I'd want to explore.

To me the artstyle in this game is the number 1 reason I'm buying it.

In my hype for this game I went and bought the Starforge alpha. But MAN is that game a load of crap. Jesus people, don't go near that stuff.

It did look really interesting, but am I the only one with a fear that it will be a buggy mess? Seems very ambitious for such a small team, hoping for the best for them.

This is why they will either need crowdfunding or the help of a bigger studio. This is how I can see Shahid getting involved. Help get them some funding or help get them involved with a studio.

It's definitely coming to the PS4 going by hints from Shahid.

I think Sony XDev is also teasing that as well.

EA spent a lot of money on the game and getting more funds helps the game move forward and most likely added to the budget of the game itself. The game could have potentially been less polished without the MS funds. I'm sure EA is very happy with the agreement.
I agree with most of what you said in response to my post but disagree about this. Titanfall is the definition of a money hat. Proven dev with big money already behind it, and a platform holder comes along and locks it up for their console(s).

It was an EA agreement all the way. Respawn didn't even seem aware of all the details as recently as a couple months ago. That's a deal between the publisher and platform holder, not the dev. That's a money hat. And a good one by MS, judging by the hype levels.

Don't forget that JD2: The Movie was a timed 360 exclusive, so they had a established relationship with MS too, but still weren't chosen for the ID@ program...

That was a necessity required by MS in order to publish Joe Danger on Xbox.

They regretted that move: http://gamasutra.com/view/news/178345/The_headache_of_not_being_able_to_tell_players_your_plans.php

"If you are an indie developer, I'd say to never get yourself into a situation where you can't talk about what you are doing."

- Hello Games' managing director Sean Murray cautions developers against making agreements that prevent them from talking directly to their fans.

The studio caught a lot of flack from PlayStation 3 owners and fans when it released an Xbox Live Arcade sequel to Joe Danger but no PlayStation Network version (the original game launched on PS3 and didn't release to Xbox 360 until 18 months later).

Hello Games will put out the follow-up plus extra content to PSN in a few weeks, but the developer couldn't tell fans that until today because of its contractual obligations to the XBLA edition's publisher Microsoft Studios.

The team's silence on the PSN version managed to irk PS3 devotees and a good deal of the community that Hello Games had worked hard to build. "If there's a piece of advice I would now give to every developer in the world, it's don't ever piss off PlayStation fans. They are a force to be reckoned with," said Murray.

For indies especially, keeping your fanbase excited about your work and acting as evangelists for your projects is key. You don't want to limit yourself to the point where you're driving them away because you can't talk to them about their concerns and let them know they're being addressed.

There are other less painful avenues to get your space sim fix man.

Edit:

I think Sony XDev is also teasing that as well.

Now I know what you're saying is fake. Who the hell loves what we saw on VGX?

But really, maybe they went timed exclusive with sony to get the money needed for this project from pub fund(That being said this has PC game written all over it and I'd probably buy it there).

Really digging the art style, and very well put together trailer. However I'd like to know more about the 'game' aspect, and the small size of the team concerns me in terms of actual meaningful content in that regard for something so ambitious in scope (we're so pretty oh so pretty..vacant) still definitely one of yesterdays high points.

They hinted at this as being massively multiplayer right? This has shot up my list of most anticipated games, but I started thinking if everybody is playing together in the same universe then I'm afraid of what might happen. There's the obvious potential for griefing. There appears to be ship vs. ship combat and what appears to be large battle cruisers. I really hope people don't ruin this or the darker side of human nature takes over and corrupts the game world.

So I when I first saw the trailer for this I couldnt understand what got people so hyped. I watched it a second time, and is the world suppose to be like the world in say a skyrim? Open, persistant, that kind of thing? Because yeah, that would be fucking awesome. Espically with space ships that can take you into outer space

Oh god I hope it isn't an exclusive. This could be a megaton on the PC.
If it's like most of Sony's other indies it'll likely launch exclusively on PS4 first and PC later. I think only Helldivers and Everyone's Gone to the Rapture are Sony console-only indies. Pretty sure Hello Games' Joe Danger games were timed PS3 exclusives, too.

That's if Sony does have some sort of exclusivity. It certainly seems like the kind of indie they'd be interested in.

You've played Eve, haven't you? I see it in your words.....

And that does nothing for you?

Not for me.

Just watched the trailer right this second for the first time and I'm not really clicking with it.

I'm sure it's a great technical achievement but it doesn't seem like an overly fun game to play.

This game seems too ambitious to actually contain any fun gameplay.

But the idea is interesting enough to follow it and see what they do with it.

You might very well be right. But I just want to fly a space ship towards a planet, slow down and then slowly descend to the surface of the planet. The thing is, I have a really hard time picturing how that would look for some reason. Give me that, and I'll be satisfied.

It is a procedurally generated universe with procedurally generated worlds. In the interview on VGX it was said that when you look up into the sky and see stars, they are actually suns with planets around them that you can go to and explore. Again, all procedurally generated.

Sony buys out team...

Rename the game it to Colony Wars: Omega...

Releases it in late 2014 or early 2015....

....

Profit?

Dude, you sir are a genius!

Damn! This is actually a brilliant idea. This game could totally work to revive the Colony Wars franchise.

Now they just need to make a G-Police revival.

Hell, even if the gameplay is mediocre if the universe is half as big as they're presenting it as this game has me by the balls.

Yep. Especially if it is also unpredictable with the dangers of exploring the unknown like they are suggesting. Put that together with the atmosphere and beauty, and you have something truly magical.

How much content did we actually see in the trailer?

7 ships/spacecraft?
4 creatures?
4 environments?
1 weapon?

I think this looks awesome, but I NEED more info!!!

I feel like I need to say that the trailer itself was cut very well - the rapid cuts between scenes when taking off, things flying overhead, the music.

Amazingly done trailer.

Yup. Here's the complete list.
Glad to see this is pretty much coming to PS4, but the ambition issue still troubles me. Granted, we've seen teams with fewer people put out some amazing games, but this just seems so big and complex... can't wait to see it demoed.

For the record, I mentioned this earlier, but it seems to be an expanded version of Mirror Moon EP.

In Mirror Moon EP, you have a spaceship with a cockpit. You take off into the universe and can discover procedurally generated planets with different environments and puzzles. When you discover a planet for the first time, you get to name it.

That game was actually pretty ambitious considering it had an even smaller team. This game seems to add space battles and a bit less abstraction, but it's still conceptually not far off. Might want to check it out if you're curious, it's a very interesting exploration game.

The colors are beautiful, the artstyle is great, a game about exploration, this is my kind of game.

This is next gen.
