Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I want to bite on this game.

Does anyone know how successful you could be at this game without much of the "world building" aspect? As in, strictly exploring like a platformer?

Damn, so everything's being wiped tomorrow? Kinda sucks but I guess it won't take me as long to get to where I am now the second time around.

Ok, I'm seeing this a lot, so let's clarify what the wipe is "suppose" to be:

Its a "character wipe", which essentially means your character data is wiped. So, what exactly would you lose?

QUEST PROGRESSION, ANY TECHS YOU'VE ACQUIRED AND ACTIVATED, and YOUR SHIP AND ANYTHING ON IT.

So why aren't some of us worried, or don't really care? We've stowed our crap on a planet, either SP or MP, doesnt matter, the stuff is not on a ship. When the wipe comes around, theoretically, NONE OF OUR GEAR WILL BE WIPED.

See, when the wipe occurs, all we have to do is cut down enough trees or dig up enough coal to run over to the planet we stashed our gear on. Once we've recovered our stuff, we just breeze through the quests again. Some of us have already created a distress beacon that way we can get the boss fight out of the way.

If you've taken proper measures, the wipe won't really affect you in any major way. At worst, you lose techs, but those are easy to find, if you've noted what coordinates you found those techs at.

I know a couple of you are hesitant to play right now because of the wipe, but really, as long as you're prepared, it won't be that much of a problem.

NOW GRANTED, WORST CASE SCENARIO, IT MIGHT BE A FULL WIPE. If that puts you off, you really shouldnt even be playing the game at this point. Wait till we're out of beta, because there will probably be more wipes.

This mod is kind of amazing. Check it out. I've built a thing. A crappy thing. I'm not Retro.

She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. Just don't light any fires. Oh wait.

So yeah, build your own damn ship. That's pretty cool. You can move anything and it's entirely functional. The only thing is that you have a set warp-in point. It's not set to your teleporter. It even works in multiplayer, apparently, though anyone can just go through and wreck your ship.

Edit: Careful if you try this with a character you care about. Make backups. ALWAYS make backups.

Pretty successful. You'll still need some sort of basic place to do crafting and storage, but you don't really need anything more than a dinky little house.

I didn't even really build a major house until I killed the first boss, and even then, its not that fancy. Just enough for storage and crafting stations.

I am not worried about the wipe..because I get to start over and see new changes.

Same here. I've never minded restarting in Terraria if I'm 'playing' it. Building, that's another matter entirely, but I'm not building anything serious until we're out of Phase 1 at the earliest.

Saw that mod on the Starbound forums, but the devs already stated that ship expansion is coming anyway, so I'd rather wait for that than use that mod.

You don't have to fight the whole time with the bow. Just get the killing hit with it.

This is why we need randomized Universe seeds.

That would be extra shitty. Let the gamers game if they want to, I want to be able to share coordinates with my friends without being in multiplayer all the time.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to actual earned in-game ship expansion, but seeing that this is even possible is pretty great to me. I know people would be able to create awesome looking ships if they were given the freedom to do so, what with all the different blocks in the game. And it was a good time to fool around with it, what with the impending doom.

Characters probably, universe possibly. Nothing is 100% yet. The developer actually said "This update will probably require a character reset," which is why everyone is building a bunker and stashing their goodies in it, to retrieve later on a new character.

Word, thanks for clearing that up. Guess I gots work to do..

Guess I'm glad for the character wipe since I screwed my character.

I was just talking about how bored I was with level 10 zones. Someone here helped me figure out how to get to the Beta sector (you have to 'use' the starmap), I decided to jump straight into a Level 20 planet.

Yeah... apparently my 59 damage, 10 penetration sniper rifle does a whopping 3 damage to enemies, all of whom one shot me.

So on the GAF server, we each would have our own planets, or is there one planet where everyone starts, and just branches out from there?

Personally, my stance on me using mods for this game is that I'd rather not use any mods until the game is out of beta. A lot of mods that people are coming up with are usually some sort of feature the dev is probably going to implement later on, so I'd rather wait for the official features.

I did use a server mod for Terraria, but that was mainly because the devs for that game were never going to add in any features that the TShock mod did (like player accounts, region protection, etc).

They can't shoot through the ground. Dig three or four bricks down, and then tunnel for coal.

Or just fly back. You can move to a moon for 1 fuel, or another planet in the system for around 50, and even wood will power your ship.

I tried to play Starbound on a different computer but the owner's characters load instead of mine even though I used my login for Steam. WHY WHY!

edit: apparently you have to transfer files from the computer. pretty dumb.

They're just files in the starbound/universe folder. Not every game has Steam saves, and I'm not sure why you'd want them in a beta where we're expecting a wipe any day now.

So the issue there is that armor penetration basically, penetration relates directly to level or enemies. The higher your penetration the more damage something does to enemies, if your penetration is below the enemies it does less. Same applies to your armor, enemies at level 20 have 20 armor and 20 penetration, meaning if you have less than 20 armor, they do a significant amount more damage to you.

This is changing in the patch coming out soon, and your other option is digging straight down from spawn on the planet to try and find fuel to go somewhere else.

They should make it similar to Demon Souls; when you die all the loot you got from mining becomes a chest where you died and you have to go retrieve it.

Serious question, how do you guys find things? I have played 10 hours and found the glitch fortress by running around the map. Other planets I have been to have nothing on the surface other than a hut with 1 person in it. I also spend most of my time digging but find nothing until I get to lava and port back to the top. Maybe I am unlucky? or is there a strategy I am missing.

They need to mess with the drop rates. I crafted the highest tier 2 armor and weapons and was still getting destroyed by anything above level 15. Yet no good weapons or armor dropped at any point.

Didn't even know there are weapon drops, only crafting materials. Must be my luck I guess.

Tomorrow's patch is addressing the balancing for that stuff

I took out a prison with about 30 humans, half of which had guns. Not a single gun dropped. I got a whole bunch of crappy melee weapons though.

Tomorrow what day/date is that? I been hoping it will hit before I get off class in 1.5 hours.

Its Monday the 9th, 10:34 AM for me right now.

How are you porting to the top?

I did a short hair mod tutorial! It's not very detailed and I didn't want to get into design and pixel art theory, but it gives you a basic idea about how to make your own hair for the game. If you're not too used to pixel art, you can start by modifying existing hair into a style you want!

edit: Click through for large.

Messing with this to pass time, do you know why some models need a climb model (back view) for the hair and others seem not to? (floran)

I tried connecting to a friend and vice versa via himachi and it was an absolute lag fest.
Anyone know how this can be fixed?

I have 100 down and 20 up and hamachi anyhing always is a lagfest. Than again hamachi actually breaks my connection.

Just have one of you port forward or just DMZ your PC.

I'm not sure, but my conjecture is that part of the game is simply not finished yet. Most of the body animations have a part with climbing, but as yet I have not seen climbing in the game. Most of the Avian plumage has both, but some do not. I am editing some of mine to have a climb model if the base I'm working off of has it, but the others I don't bother. I can edit them later if need be. I don't want to put out things I can't even test.

So I guess I need some tips for the very beginning of the game, especially with regards to getting iron, getting better armor and weapons, and seeing if I can farm.

- Make a copper pickaxe (upgrade from stone), go digging. Iron will appear grey.
- Better armor is crafted, start with copper (Leather might be better now, but won't be tomorrow).
- Craft an Iron Bow as soon as you can, it's absurdly strong.
- Make a stone hoe (no need to improve on that, you won't use it that much) and till some flat earth. Plant some seeds (you should have gotten some in your ship's inventory) and wait a bit for them to grow. Plants usually drop a few seeds so you can keep replanting.
- Chop vines for plant fiber, turn it into bandages.

Got the bandages down, do I need the anvil for pickaxes?

On that note, be sure to copy down the coordinates of your "stash planet" or at least take a screenshot of your home coordinates when you're sitting in the captains chair

Ahh, thanks for the guide though, was a real help. I made a mane for my monkeyman
