Week of December 9th to the 15th, 2013.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a deeper look at the Dean of the NeoGAF Faculty of Theorycraft, Dahbomb!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
Currently I only dabble in SSF4AE and by dabble I mean get obliterated by Kadey. I also have Skullgirls on the side and I am waiting for a price drop on Injustice to start that up. Before that I used to play UMVC3 a lot until I sold my console.

My all time favorite games include the Tekken series and the VS series. I was pretty into Tekken until Tekken 4 hit which disappointed me and I looked for other fighting games after which I learned of the VS series. I still came back for Tekken 5 but once I got a taste of dat Marvel crack it was just too much. If I had to choose my one single fighting game it would be TTT1. At the time the game was the ultimate fan service to Tekken fans and nothing quite like that was done in 3D games. I was vastly impressed by the graphics and the roster size plus great additions like a universal low parry system and tag mechanics. It was a PS2 system seller for me.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
My favorite mechanic in a recent fighter has to be custom assists in Skullgirls. It works really well and I hope all team based fighting games adopt it in the future.

My least favorite mechanic are TACs which I have explained in great detail many times in the past. I enjoy resets a lot and TACs marginalize them greatly.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I went to the arcades as a kid and saw SF2:WW being played. The game looked good, had interesting characters and lots of people were playing it. Since then I have dabbled in just about every major fighting game series except for the anime games even though I have nothing against anime, I enjoy watching some anime.

I play just about every game genre there is. My favorite is the 3D action adventure genre of which I am a big fan of the DMC series. Currently I am playing DOTA 2 and Path of Exile on the side.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
My favorite fighting game character is definitely Yoshimitsu from Tekken, more specifically the Tekken 3 design. He was my first character and even though I stopped maining him a long time ago he still holds a special spot.

While not designed specifically for a fighting game, Vergil is my favorite character to be in a fighting game followed closely by Iron Man and Dante.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
My playstyle is more defensive and reactionary. I don't like taking big risks or doing YOLO plays. I may do it out of lulz or when the connection is bad or to throw off my opponent but that is not my default state. I also don't go for swag, I just keep things dry as possible.

I mostly play locally with some online play. I generally don't like online play because of lag.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My strength in a fighting game is keeping things simple in dire situations and being patient/defensive. Of course this applies to games that I actually know how to play; mostly Tekken and VS games.

My biggest weakness by far is execution. I have terrible execution and I generally avoid long/optimized combos if I can. I also have bad defense in 2D games, especially VS games; MVC2 spoiled me with AA assists.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment is definitely when I won my runback money match in TTT1. Better moment than placing at any tournament. Close second would be Vergil announced for UMVC3.

Worst moment was probably losing that MM initially but it was the wake up call I needed to get better.
What do you want from future fighting games
I want more team based fighters, I want more Dojo like modes, good netcodes, training modes that come with frame data/hit-box viewer and I want fighters to release with more than 20 characters.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Deckard Cain

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or PM me to let me know.

Guys, I'm torn. Should I play GT6, SC 5, or DOA5? I hate getting into these situations, I usually spend more time deciding what to play than actually playing, lol.

Also I can't wait to see Deckard Cain's spotlight. (if he even does it)

Holy shit, I just saw the Sanford "The King" Kelly vs The World FT5 sets.

The callouts, the excitement, the people running around like they had their heads chopped off, the "SUCK IT' taunt, the "STOP IT!"s...

THE HYPE

Oh yeah, by the way. Project M 3.0 should be getting released sometime tomorrow. Looking forward to trying it out. With the Smash Documentary and EVO 2013 x Melee tournament, I'm really interested in checking it out. Anyone else?

Enjoyed the interview. Thanks Dahbomb/Enzo.

I don't think we got TTT1 properly in Australia. We only got hybrid some time later.

Ah, damnit. Project M release is what I missed in OP. Thanks for inadvertently reminding me, had it on my list and it slipped my mind.

SF needs to be moved up at least one tier, B is just too low. I would also bump UMvC3 down a tier. Otherwise that's a pretty solid list.

Saw no link for a stream of it on SRK or their FB, but I'll take your word and add it. Thanks!
Yes it does say it in the SRK topic,

Stream(s):
Team Spooky's Sabin (Arturo Sanchez)

Also Art mentioned it on stream today.

If umvc3 was technically more sound of a game it would be in my top list. I'm not too crazy about xtekken but theres some things i like about it. good list either way.

I hate the combo system of sfiv the most out of all those games, and has made me dislike the game each time I return to it.

How is Marvel and SFxT higher tear than AE '12?
Because I feel they are both better games? Even if SFxT is boring as fuck to watch for most people it doesn't have the issues the current version of SF4 has. Ultra looks like it's fixing a ton of things so it's most likely gonna shoot up to A at the very least and if combo works magic sit right up there with KoF.

Marvel is there because well I shouldn't have to explain why Marvel is there.

There is also another factor to where they place on tiers and it's one of the things I think that maters most in any fighting game. It's obvious if you look at the games and where I list them if you played them all

Surprised you missed

Vanguard Princess

A zoning version of Fei. Should be a good character as long as they tune her correctly.

Zoning Fei Long with Godlike Normals and strong Oki game

She's better in USFIV. She synergized so poorly with most of the cast, and it was hard to mix people up. Well, against good people.
Thanks.

Now if only someone could tell me what archetype Fei Long is cause I'm still bad at fighting games and want to learn before USF4 comes out
