Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Why is Zombi U still at full price on the eShop when I can find it for $21 on Amazon? I noticed there's a sales section in the eShop, has this game been on sale in the past?

Ubisoft's North American office is asleep at the wheel. The game is $19.99 in Europe.

I think I'm going to Best Buy tonight to buy a WiiU. Haven't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES. What am I doing?

There is A LOT to play and I absolutely love the system. Hope you enjoy it!

Especially since the SNES was his last Nintendo console. Man, Wii Mode is gonna suck up a lot of time catching up on N64 and Wii games alone lol.

So contacted Amazon and they're sending me a replacement for Tuesday which is great. Really quick.

They said they can't do anything about Zelda being inside the system, especially since I didn't purchase the game from them. So I randomly decided to try to get it to turn on so I could eject the disc and what do you know? It turns on first try...

I did mess around with the power brick and cable before trying (laying out the cable straight and whatnot) so I'm thinking it is simply an issue with the adapter. But I feel pretty silly getting a new console when this one does work...ish. I dunno...

I suppose at the end of the day it doesn't matter because I'll have a Wii U, but losing my data and NNID(?) is a pain.

Never feel bad about getting a functioning console. Clearly yours isn't right. As for the NNID, you'll need to call Nintendo Support on Tuesday and have them transfer it. If you don't have any purchases, then it's not really necessary and you can just create a new one. Nintendo really need to fix this situation. Calling support should not be a requirement for account recovery.

And it's done. Now for the interminable system update...

Why would Nintendo choose a glossy finish for the Gamepad??!! I've only had my Wii U for two days and I can already tell this is going to be a constant source of annoyance for me. The thing is a dust and smudge magnet.

Other than that I love the Gamepad, it's nearly everything I wanted from a VMU successor.

Get a silicone jacket for it. Best Buy has them on clearance for $2, and they're compatible with the charging cradle. Feels a lot better in your hands as well.

Wow. This first firmware update is taking me forever. I dont even wanna know what downloading WWHD will be like.

WW didn't take long for me to download. I just started the download and turned off the Wii U and did something else. I came back a little later and the light on my console indicated it was done. It's only slow if you sit there and watch it.

Back to my Pro Controller topic, I'm still figuring out what's causing me to have to re-sync it all the time. If I turn the console on with the Pro and don't let it go back to sleep while the console is booting up, it remains synced fine. If I simply turn on the console with the Pro and then never touch the controller again until the main menu is up, it loses proper sync and the cursor constantly slides to the left, forcing me to either re-sync or pair it again.

This system update has been downloading for over an hour.

Finished the main portion of New Super Mario Bros. U. Yeah, that game is worlds better than the other NSMB games. Actually, I was thinking it's a shame that the others even exist (NSMB 1 and 2 in particular), because they kinda stole the thunder of what's actually a fantastic game. Oh well. All I can say is that if you were on the fence about giving the game a shot, you should probably do it.

I'll probably finish up the post-game stuff, collect the like 10 coins I missed, and then move on to Wind Waker HD... for real this time.

For all new Wii U owners who have made the correct decision to purchase monster hunter Ultimate:

I am here to help!

PM me via GAF and after exchanging info, I can be your helpful free guide to getting into the game. Or if you are already reasonably established, I can help you clear or farm stuff quickly online for an hour or two.

It can be challenging to get into and i want you to love it. I also want an excuse to use some really cool lower level armors and weapons that I cant justify using in endgame hunts.

Its a win win.

I am now the owner of a Wii U!!

Best Buy price matched an ad and I got it for $249. Its the Mario Luigi Deluxe set.

Really excited to jump in. I just couldn't wait anymore. The need to play 3D World was just too great and when I saw that I could get it at that price it had to be done.

Actually, as someone who recently made that correct decision, I had two general questions:

1) Should I invest in a pro controller for this, or use the GamePad?

2) What do you even do in the game? Do you kill smaller monsters, or just hunt the big ones?

Ok, since I can't convince myself to shell out $399 for a PS4 (if I can even find one), I've lately been hankering for a WiiU. A couple months ago, I would have never even considered it but 3D World is really calling my name. I do have some questions for current owners:

-How is VC, is it as robust as it is on the Wii?

-How is the UI? I liked the Wii's UI; is it similar?

-How are the TV remote functions on the gamepad?

-How is the gamepad's battery life?

-What games can I look forward to early next year?

You don't need to buy any motion plus wiimotes, the old ones work fine for most games. Might want to consider buying the Nintendo Land and M+ Wiimote bundle. I think the only time I ever needed a M+ wiimote was for metroid blast in Nintendo Land. And everything, from stting up the internet connection, browsing the e-shop to updating the system can be done on the Pad.

Thank you. I hope none of the game's I play on the gamepad look terrible.I can not really find any nintendo land bundles on the futureshop canada, bestbuy canada or walmart canada websites unless they controller comes with the game already.

turn console on with pro controller (fight urge to bash on buttons etc, seriously, don't press anything) wait a second, press A only (only, nothing else) and it should be fine.. soon as you see the pointer you can bash away.

Where can I find a white one?

the white one never had one if you want those black stands white your gonna have to spray paint them.

This week somebody posted a link, i think it was in this topic, to white stands, so they DO exist... but are extremely difficult to come by. There are 3rd party stands (which are ugly). If i were you, i'd look into making a 3D model and have them 3D printed.

1) Should I invest in a pro controller for this, or use the GamePad?

2) What do you even do in the game? Do you kill smaller monsters, or just hunt the big ones?

The pro controller is a great investment regardless. Its amazing battery life will help will marathon sessions that I find myself getting into whenever I play monster hunter.
That said, the gamepad is still great as having instant access to making combo items, and the keyboard for typing online, the mic for chat, and more is very nice. That said, if you have the deluxe, it comes with a tiny stand that is perfect to have in front of you while you play with the pro. Its my ideal set up.

The game starts you off gathering and learning how to collect and kill small monsters to learn the basics. Each area is its own ecosystem that you gradually learn to take advantage of. Eventually, nearly all your quests will involve hunting larger monsters and harvesting parts from them to build a huge arsenal of weapons and armor. There are dozen weapon styles to chose from and they all have their own movesets that take time to master and learn. You switch between them interchangeably depending on how you feel most comfortable tackling that particular monster.

The depth comes from learning monster movements and patterns to take it down most effectively, alone or with a group. There are are a few dozen or so armor skills that you can create to give yourself abilities on the field, and certain weapons have elemental or status effects that very in effectiveness depending on the monster. There are also hundreds of items to use, in battle or on yourself, like traps or potion that you have available to use.

Missions end when the monster is killed or the occasional turning in of items. There are 3 levels of monsters, low/high/g rank that you work your way through, each of which drops different items to build different levels of parts. You are always working on making yourself better, but at the end of the day it always comes back to skill.

I probably said to much and may have potentially scared you off, but MH GAF is great and can answer any questions as they come up. A

Not yet, at all, but you can still download from the Wii VC catalog. Do note that you can only play Wii U VC games on the gamepad (with gamepad buttons/sticks + screen). Wii VC games can also be played on the gamepad, but only as a small TV screen, so you'll still need the Wii controlers to play. You can transfer your current Wii VC games to Wii U. If one of those games is also available in the Wii U VC (like i said, not all are at this point), you'll be able to purchase that version at reduced price (1 instead of 5, 1.5 instead of 7.5 dollars/euro) to have the advantage of being able to "play" them on the gamepad.

-How is the UI? I liked the Wii's UI; is it similar?

Very. The browser has been much improved though. You can also stream movies from your pc to your Wii U browser, using Plex or PlayOn. To either TV or gamepad or both.

-How are the TV remote functions on the gamepad?
Basic but functional. Note that i'm from EU and we don't have TVii working (yet?).

-How is the gamepad's battery life?

Not that hot. If you turn on the brightness, add rumble etc... about 3 hours. If you put brightness on lowest, disable rumble, put on the battery saving function... close to 5 hours. There are larger batteries available for it. One from Nintendo, one from a 3rd party (even bigger). They all fit into the same slot (the standard one only takes up half the available space).

-What games can I look forward to early next year?

X
Bayonetta 2
Mario Kart
Fucking Donkey Kong
Project Cars (PC gameplay)
Yarn Yoshi
Super Smash Bros

EDIT: i didn't notice you asked for "early" 2014... Many of these will come later in the year.

Everyone buy Zombi U.

Everyone.
Let's just say that a certain family member may find themselves a happy fellow come Christmas morning.

They're a big Dark Souls fan so I think they'll love it as much as I have.

I wish I could go back in time and vote this game of the year last year :(

This console is a revelation if you're just in it for the exclusives. After using the PS4/Vita remote play you really appreciate how good Nintendo's implementation is.

Nice!!
Love the avatar too, my buddy got me into Ace Combat by getting me AC4, tons of fun!

And I agree with sphagnum, that's my current plan right now. I beat WWHD, working on Earthbound, I'm early on in Xenoblade and I'm dying to play the Metroid Prime Trilogy, and since I don't have a Gamecube I think I'll go for the Wii collection, as it's gone done in price enough for me.

Not even fucking close. I mean there's Earthbound, but otherwise, it's relatively paltry. Thankfully if you transfer your Wii stuff over, you can still play your pre-purchased VC games without the additional features, but still...

-How is the UI? I liked the Wii's UI; is it similar?
Relatively simple but there are some annoying quirks. That said, it's not hard to get into a game or anything. It's a lot faster now than it used to be.

-How are the TV remote functions on the gamepad?
Simple, but totally fine. I'm grateful for the addition of this feature.
-How is the gamepad's battery life?
Pretty lame. About 3-5 hours. I generally leave mine plugged in even when in use unless it's being passed around, but yeah... not great.

-What games can I look forward to early next year?
Donkey Kong in February
Mario Kart in March

there's other stuff like Bayonetta, Yarn Yoshi, X, and Smash, but we don't have release dates yet. Probably in a January Direct?

If you're getting it now though, you'll have some stuff atleast backlogged to check out like Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, and ZombiU

Actually, it's kind of appealing. Game sounds hardcore as fuck, and that's something I'm interested in.

Would you recommend getting the Wii U version if I've already mastered the 3DS game? I'm a Monster Hunter veteran already (Been playing since the early PSP days), and I'm not sure if I should buy the same game again (Possibly for a third time if you count the original Tri) or just wait for 4...

Played around a little before I went to bed - and the Wii U went up for chrimbo. Checked everything was working, did a system update and fooled around with Nintendo Land.

Nintendo Land didn't grab me, my brother didn't like it at all. I only played the Metroid game., it was neat - it took me a few moments to realise I need to move it like a gyroscope. but not something that I'd play much. Will test the rest on Christmas morning with the little one probably going nuts and not letting me play it.

Wiipad surprised me. It's light. The screen is a great size. The buttons felt a little cheap, and it wasn't quite comfortable in my hands as previous Nintendo controllers. Taking my hand off to touch the screen was awkward. I think it might take a little getting use too. It took me a while when the Wiimote came out to find the most comfortable position for pointing.

Messed around in Miiverse for a bit and it seems really cool.

Setup was smooth, the update took maybe 40 mins to download and install. I didn't notice much waiting between menus or loading.

The great thing was, all of this, all of it was done on the gamepad as my wife was in the room and the TV was off. So cool.

But one of the best features was drawing on the pad and posting it on miverse. Resistive screen For The Win. It's the most responsive touch screen I have in my position now. Much better for drawing than the iPad.

You need to play that Luigi! So much better than NSMBU. And I'd argue that the right time to play it is right after beating NSMBU.

I find myself in a predicament. My girlfriend likes Mario games and wouldn't mind a Wii U for Christmas(despite being puzzled by the purpose of the Wiipad). My heart tells me Nintendo is going to bail the console by the end of the 2014/first quarter 2015 and I would just be dumping cash into a failure. I'm not sure if I should just get her a 3DS or swallow my doubt and get the Wii U. I feel like I have time since, as the OP stated, there are no shortages whatsoever.
