No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

For the record, I mentioned this earlier, but it seems to be an expanded version of Mirror Moon EP.

In Mirror Moon EP, you have a spaceship with a cockpit. You take off into the universe and can discover procedurally generated planets with different environments and puzzles. When you discover a planet for the first time, you get to name it.

That game was actually pretty ambitious considering it had an even smaller team. This game seems to add space battles and a bit less abstraction, but it's still conceptually not far off. Might want to check it out if you're curious, it's a very interesting exploration game.

MirrorMoon EP is indeed pretty damn cool.

MirrorMoon EP is the first game I thought of it, and I'm totally fine with that - the concept greatly expanded should be awesome.

Yes, PC is the place for indie games, but you can probably count on one hand the number of indie games that have sold 1 million copies. Probably just Minecraft and Meatboy really. Suggesting that even the most obscure titles get over a million sales is silly.

Wut

Mmmmmmmmm....

I love the way this game looks. If anything, this trailer has really shown how afraid most devs are of color. We've improved since the brown and yellow "next-gen" look of the early 360/PS3 days, but it's still a breath of fresh air to see a non-platformer that's so colorful.

I don't think so. Maybe not the most obscure titles, but I think you'd be surprised by how many hands you'd need.

There's colour, but it does look to have a yellowish tint, or the so-called piss-filter applied to the image.

One of the inspirations for MirrorMoon EP (and hopefully this game as well, as it is giving me a similar vibe) was Alessandro Ghignola's Noctis, which was another title that had players exploring just for the sake of exploration. Similar to MirrorMoon EP and (from what we've seen) No Man's Sky, Noctis also allowed you to fly to any star you could see, and name planets if you were their first explorer.

If No Man's Sky provides us with nothing more than the ability to visit and explore endlessly-generated planets of the quality seen in the reveal trailer, I'll be as happy as can be.

If a team of 4 can make this game.

and 1 AAA game takes a team of 100 people.

You could get 25 teams of 4 out of 100 people.... so basically 25 games instead of just 1.

Sony/Ninty/MS should do this with some studios, instead of closing them after a game bombs.

25 exclusives within a 2-3 year span > 1 AAA exclusive in 2-3 years.

Especially considering that a lot of AAA games bomb.

I cannot wait for this game to come out :D This is the kind of game I would love to play and just run around in. Will patiently be waiting for more information.

I really don't want to say anything bad about this game at all... because it looks awesome.

But does anyone else think they kind of ripped off "The Witness"?

First Person exploration game, with an identical art style.

witness_lower_marq.jpg

No Mans Sky seems a bit better though. Graphically and conceptually. You explore the universe, while The Witness is just about exploring an island.

Any clue as to which systems this will be on, because that trailer was absolutely incredible!

Nothing on platforms yet.

Also get ready guys, previews are going up tomarrow at various places! I know detoid already said they will have a piece on No Mans Sky tomarrow, and I highly doubt they will be the only one.

Cant wait to learn more about the game.

While I enjoyed the Space Combat stuff that they showed off, I can't help but feel underwhelmed because we know very little about the land based exploration. How does it play? What will I be doing when I finally discover that planet for the first time? Is it going to be like Minecraft or something where im just exploring the planet for raw materials and resources? Will there be survival elements? Am I exploring the planets just for space ship parts?

I mean they showed a fantastic ocean sequence, and crashed warship and a giant sand worm creature. I want to know what my involvement in those scenarios will be like.

nah i've seen both in motion, they don't look similar at all

Joe Danger was exclusive on PS3 for a year and a half.... so they might have a good relationship with Sony.

With Adam Boyes and Sony really courting the indies hard since the first PS4 reveal, there is no way this doesn't make it on PS4.

Looks amazing, Elite on C64 stole a couple of years of my childhood and this seems like a spiritual successor. Crazy how far games have come.

please tell me you're joking

Pretty different in philosophy. The Witness is about packing in as many hand-crafted details, puzzles and designs into as dense of a space as can be reasonably done, whereas No Man's Sky seems to be much more automated, much more open and barren.

I'm not trying to knock procedural generation (I'm actually working on my own PG game right now!), but it's likely the two games will be vastly different.

Plus, The Witness doesn't have guns.

Fwiw, I rewatched the trailer and it's definitely being controlled with a game pad and not a mouse. I realize you can connect one to a PC but why even use it for the trailer if it isn't coming to consoles?

Also: yes the visuals look similar to the Witness but I don't think anyone ripped each other off. I love them both. I wouldn't call NMS a piss filter though. It's more likely to just be using odd colors because of being on different planets with their own ecology and atmospheres.

Incredible.

Literally. I don't believe the end result will come anywhere close to the concept, it's just way too wide in scope for a team that size.

But I'd love be served a huge helping of crow when it releases.

In terms of art style, this is a direction many indie games are going. It's the trend and you'll see more of them.

Rime (PS4)

Exploration (often procedural) has been huge since Minecraft and we're seeing a ton of that across indies in general, no matter the art style.

Can't wait, thanks.

If you notice, essentially all games are previewed running on powerful PCs but controlled with a analog controller.

This allows for smooth movement across the screen, so people are taking in the vistas, gameplay, etc, and not distracted by jerky movements.

RPS also has something coming "soon", I guess there's an embargo that's ending tomorrow?

This game looks amazing. Love the art direction. The seamless tradition from planet to space makes me fall in love.

Reading their twitter. Looks like they were pretty stunned by the reception the game got.
Defiantly well deserved. I wonder if they'll ever come on Gaf.

This is a direction many indie games are going. It's the trend and you'll see more of them.

I can confirm this. Indies generally don't have enough artists for a fully realized world. In the past, this has generally meant making super pixelated games. A rising trend is the selective-detail look, which works well for painterly, cell-shaded or cartoon visuals.

Rime (PS4)

You are right. It's eye candy, while still being cheaper than AAA graphics. It's perfect for indies and I actually prefer that art style sometimes.

The colorful trees, especially that pink tree, is what reminded me of Jonathan Blow's game.

Both games look good and I'll get both. But I don't know how someone can say it didn't at least take a little bit of inspiration from The Witness

Going from the planet surface to space was great and was what I wished I was able to do back in the 90's with Terminal Velocity. Keen to hear what platforms this is coming to (Mac version would go down nicely).

"Both games look good and I'll get both. But I don't know how someone can say it didn't at least take a little bit of inspiration from The Witness :)"

I don't think the use of vivid color was invented by The Witness. They already name dropped their specific inspirations (old scifi novel covers) and it shows.

Its funny people think just because the witness was shown first it somehow inspired these games. Games have looked like this before that game. AND i am sure this has been in development for a bit, its not like they saw the witness trailer and were LIKE OMG i just got the idea for No Man's Sky

Tearaway. The games Sony makes give usually give out cost figures of ~$20Million. Firesprite. No, that's a terrible idea. Flood the market with your own games that may or may not be good and will still cost as much money to make because of staff wages? And the lower price point means the amounts need to sale to profit on each one will be relatively high if even one bombs. And each not amazing polished game decreases pedigreee. And, it's more like 12 people. 12 people made Tearaway and it's a Vita title. You'd need to bump that up a bit more for a PS4 title, maybe 35 people. So more like... 3 teams. And then you just lost a big AAA studio, which aren't exactly coming out of the woodwork. Sony redistributes it's staff and talent among the other studios in WWS when one goes defunct. And they keep good relationships with the studios that come of the people that leave. Also this,
Yoshida-san said:
“So we have supported some studios—Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Guerilla—to become able to produce multiple projects at the same time, while we shut down mid-sized studios who were struggling to compete… that’s in reaction to the changes of the time,” Yoshida shares.
Getting consumers to spend $60 is hard, and the only way to do that is by offering bigger titles that far outclass those of the mid-sized titles, Yoshida feels. He goes on emphasize: “It’s been a bloodbath of medium-sized games for the last two years… the market is extremely hard for smaller, mid-sized games these days.”
Mid-sized studios have a serious question to ask themselves, Yoshida says: “if you are making a studio, like 40 or 50 people studio, it’s a really tough age—whether they try to grow and compete to become triple-A, or if they try to do indie-style small development. It’s really a good, critical question for many of the mid-sized studios.”

If Sony wants small-mid sized games, that's what Pub Fund is for. And they could sign them on contracts ( Giant Sparrow, ThatGameCompany, Housemarque[?] ). And they could publish them (Rime, Rapture, Shadow) There's other ways to get small games. Also, developer relations may end up in a ton of console exclusives just by virtue of being good to work with. Put FuturLab and Curve in that category.

Then again, I'd be for the idea for Vita games =D. See who wants to work on a Vita game, make a small group, give em' time. Make more Tearaways.

On topic, if Shahid is on top of this, that means they didn't get shut out. And I feel like if Shahid wants something on PS4, it's going to be on PS4. The question is, what else? Pub Fund then WiiU/PC? Crowd Sourcing?

re: team sizes - Assassin's Creed III was made by 600 people. Resident Evil 6 was made by 600 people. Assassin's Creed IV was made by 900 people.

That said, game development doesn't work like that. It's all about studio structure, the goal of the team, the goal of the publisher and the skills of the individual.

Oh man, this sounds incredible if there's offline play/single player mode as well.

There aren't many games that allow seamless planet to space transitions - there's Evochron Mercenary, and some of the space simulators (Pioneer, etc.)

People, this isn't a concept. That trailer was made with the guy playing the actual game. It's been in development for years. Procedural is all about building the systems, and once those systems are in place, you just build content for the systems to use. In reality, the systems are the hard part, and those have to come first. They're clearly in the content portion of this. I speak from experience, having worked on a procedural generation system for a game before.

Does this mean the systems won't get tweaked? Of course not. But they have to be in a good place to make what was shown here.

This game trailer and premise shits on so much of the stuff we've seen from so called AAA studios. I hope this helps them get additional funding. If they decide to kickstart this. I'm there Day 1.

The interesting thing about that interview is towards the 11:30 mark (throughout the whole video, actually) you see an awful lot of what seems to be scifi reference photos.

No info about this game but this trailer.... maybe it was always Colony Wars: No Man's Sky

The game looks like it would really bode well with the PC community

Colony Wars: No Man's Sky sounds much better than my original name I made. This game would be the ultimate MMO for the PS4/PC...

You talk like a madman.
jk

The styles are hardly alike and they are two completely differrent genres, The Witness is a puzzle game, No Man's Sky is space-adventure-sim-thing.

I haven't been this excited for a game for years and years. Bravo Hello Games.

This is exactly what my friends and I used to call years ago the "Game of Games". Integrating Frontier with FPS seamlessly.

I'm beyond excited. Hoping for a PS4 release, it's what would make me pull the trigger on one.

Ok, that trailer plugged directly into my Want glands. Excellent art direction and they chose a great tune :)

I am tempering my hype until we hear more about what the actual game is like.

Procedural content is all well and good, but it tends to result in environments that are different in the details, but are thematically uniform. Taking minecraft as an example, you can walk through 100km of Plains biome and never see anything surprising. The generation is constrained by rules: "Hills no steeper than this", "these plants, in this distribution", "this colour of grass". The only true variation comes from the transition to other biomes, whose rules are hand-made.

The big challenge for PG on this scale is to procedurally generate those rules, to allow for genuinely surprising and new landscapes, whilst preventing "broken" rulesets that result in unplayable or implausible terrain. It's very hard to do. There are so many possible planets out there, so many chemistries, orbits, tectonics, weather systems, biospheres and so on, all of which affect the look of a place. Lots of interesting reading on the topic here: http://vterrain.org/Elevation/Artificial/

The same goes for plants and animals. The systems have to be very very sophisticated, or you'll just end up with Red Fish with Big Fins, Green Fish with Four Fins, and you'll easily see how it's a kit of parts. Spore did excellent work in this regard, allowing all sorts weird and wonderful creatures to be created and animated. This paper details the system they used http://chrishecker.com/Real-time_motion_retargeting_to_highly_varied_user-created_morphologies. The other part of the problem, generating the creatures themselves, is another matter....

So I am excited by the idea (it's always been an exciting idea), but it will take some serious chops to pull off well. Good luck to them, and they've got my money if they Kickstart.

EDIT: Assuming it's coming to PC, of course :-p

Reminds me of Virus (Zarch). Burn that contaminated tree!
