Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Most of the guys in the OT recommend to not play the demo and instead dive in the full game so I'm planning to do it that way. :P

If you're also getting Super Mario 3D World (well you should!) make sure to update via the disc, it's much faster that way.

Wait the Wii U update is on the disc? I do have it already, but it was a christmas gift for my fiance. I wanted to wait to give her the Wii U at Christmas, but had a last minute overseas work trip come up and then get cancelled. I guess she'll be getting both of her Christmas gifts early!

Ah I see, so all I need is to open an image upload site then. Thanks for the answer.

Yup, that's basically it. Works the same way on Miiverse. I think you can even upload to facebook if you want crappy compression. (I've been told it's more next-gen that way... har har har).

Either you download the firmware like most people... or if you buy SM3DW... the firmware is also on the disc, which will be faster than downloading it.

Very cool! Say, I see you mention the gym. If you're into fitness and Wii U I can't recommend Wii Fit U strongly enough. It's an absolute blast and can build up a real sweat.

Thanks, I'll look into this. I never got around to picking up the original, but I was always interested in it.

The "big" update is on the Super Mario 3D World disc, it should take about 15 minutes to do it and then there will be a really small update available which should take about 5 minutes. It's much faster that way. ;)

As a launch Wii U owner, I can say that sadly the. negativity is justified. You mention that Mario Kart and Smash are coming out next year (likely not till next FALL), but so what? These releases are all highly predictable, as it's the same set of games for generations of Nintendo systems. Besides Nintendo titles there is next to nothing on the horizon and 3rd support was terrible year 1, and it's only going to get worse once publishers leave the 360 and PS3 behind and stop with the shit Wii U ports. This is a fact. Again, Wii U is a Nintendo gaming system and one shouldn't expect anything else game wise on it. Nintendo also has a bad track record of putting out first party games at a constant rate. Facts only.

Very muddy facts, though. Mario Kart is a Spring game, Smash has also been mentioned as a Spring game by NoE just this week. Are Bayo2, X and SMTxFE predictable releases? is whatever they haven't announced yet a predictable release? Besides Nintendo titles there are a ton of indie titles on the horizon. Nintendo puts out a constant stream of first party releases. The problem is that they're covering two platforms with great support (unlike other platform holders) and can't supply two platforms at the exact same pace at the exact same time. Those are facts.

If they drop support for this in 2015 I will never buy another Nintendo home console again.

They won't. Stop parroting or believing what the idiots tell you.

That works for me. I'll just wrap up the game and have her open it tonight. Let's be real though, this is as much for me as it is for her.

I got my Wii U back in August but had only played it for 5 hours in August, September and October.

But now I have:

- GamePad
- Wii Motion Plus
- Wii U Pro Controller

Games:
- Assassin's Creed III
- Zombi U
- Rayman Legends
- Nintendoland
- Wii Party U
- Wii Sports Club

This is gonna be a magical console.

Probably getting Super Mario 3D World by Christmas and will buy Pikmin 3 someday as well as it is cheap.

Very nice. I'd suggest playing Zombi u straight away. it's really something quite special.

Am I the only one who put more than 1000 Hours on the console already? Owning it from january, it never stopped was it watching animes on the pad, browsing the internet or playing games.

My biggest suggestion for any of you who are new about the system or are still uncertain to get it or not is to just look beyond the purpose of the gamepad, and what you could actually attain by using it, it's an awesome machine if you just consider the off-tv feature, now add to that that you can stream videos from youtube and many other hosts and you'll find out it *could* be a kind-of multimedia system if you'll accept some compromises, there's netflix also in some countries and some other pay-tv services.

And then there are games, I've played everything exclusive to the console and some multis on it, from January to now my must-have list of games I've played and I would play all over again are these:

ZombiU
New Super Mario Bros U
NintendoLand
Lego City Undercover
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

and to fill in the gaps, the eShop was more than just helpful, it was AWESOME, with:

Trine 2
Mighty Switch Force HD

and all of the VC games for 0,30 plus some others (Street Fighter 2, TLOZ, TLOZ 2)

It's an awesome system, it just deserves more love from everyone around the world before judging it by just looking at his CPU/GPU/RAM

I bought a week ago and already put 6 hours in thanks to Pikmin 3. It's been a long time since I felt so much sense of discovery, all packed with savagery and brutality behind the cuteness of vibrant colour. Kinda remind me of Patapon a lot because of that :p

I even try to hold myself to not exhaust the game very soon. Gonna distribute my free time evenly to my other devices backlog.

Pikmin 3, the true horror survivor on Wii U. Don't be fooled by the bright colours and cute killing machines creatures. It's a world where the weak are sacrificed for the survival of the strong ones. Death, horrifying creatures, the unexplained mystery. The real hunger games. :D

Where did they mention this? Awesome news if true, and gives me hope that we can get Zelda next christmas.

I don't know where to post it and I don't think it deserves a thread. If someone is interested there's an interview of Bernd Fakesch, German Nintendo General Manager, where he hints a spring window release for Super Smash Bros., alongside MK8.

Für nächstes Frühjahr sind außerdem mit Mario Kart8 und Super Smash Bros. zwei weitere große Lizenzspiele für unsere TV-Konsole angekündigt.

Rough translation:

Can't put it better. One of the most brutal video game outthere. The cuteness that hides the savagery makes it even better.

Haha, that reminds me that I need to get this. Never played a Pikmin game before and after this description I'm even more curious about it. :P

Also today I ordered No More Heroes 2, Zack & Wiki & Another Code R all for 45e.

some exec mentioned the spring lineup as containing both smash and mario kart a few days ago.

Thats so fucking dope. It kinda confirms Nintendo has some plans for later software coming if they can push those 2 big hitters out so early.

Im thinking X, Bayo 2, and maybe even Zelda for the tail-end of 2014.

I've been really fiendin to pick up a Wii U mannnn.... But this isn't the right time for me.... I gotta fight the urge

Nintendo never has their next year Holiday announced almost two years before. There'll be big Q4 releases for them that we haven't heard a peep about.

I don't really believe they would because it would destroy their relationship with people just buying wii u's and would wreck them a lot more than losing money by continuing to support wii u. With all the doom talk it was hard not to imagine it, and I did just buy a Wii U.

Just rest assured that this won't happen. Remember that they still need to R&D a follow up system before they ditch the current one. These things don't get slapped together in a year (and if they do, you end up with scarlet rings). Wii U will have a regular console life cycle of around five years at least.

On top of that they need to launch their next handheld first. They can't afford to launch 2 new systems at once, they can't support two new launches within a year with enough software for a proper launch (as opposed to 3ds and Wii U launches). From the financial point of new they need several "normal" years before the next launches (with the increased costs that come). Shortly put, they can't afford to launch another console before 2017. Not if they want to have a better launch.

bought a wii u this weekend- for my wife and i we decided this would be our xmas gift to ourselves. got two extra controllers and borrowed 2 controllers from some friends taht dont use their wii as much anymore. The package we bought was the one that included NSMBU. (how important are plus controllers? it didnt seem to matter in mario.)

the game was a hit when we had friends over saturday night. everyone could play, and the gamepad person could be really silly as well (either helping or screwing over the players). after nearly 2 hours of playing, everyone was pretty impressed with the system (or so they said) and wanted to play again. i dont have any other games yet, so i am still trying to decide what should be the game to add to the collection. I played nintendoland and thought a few of those were fun, but it was a little hit or miss.

i am a real gamer, while my wife is the definition of casual. for her our ps3 is only used for netflix. most of my friends are the same, and while it is a little depressing to me that when i have tried to get the group to play ps3 games en masse (LBP, All-Stars, Kart) they just never seem to go over that well. for some reason, nintendo just seems to have something extra figured out that always seems to make things work. its kind of amazing to me.

anyway, if anyone can recommend some next games for a group to play, i would appreciate. the obvious ones i see at the store are party u, wario, sonic racing and the winter games.

Congrats on the pickup

Now go get MARIO 3D WORLD

I would rather get X in Spring and Smash in the fall. D:

Same... but I can't see that happening. D: I'm worried X won't even make it in 2014. :(

Question about the Super Mario 3D World "update" being on the disc thing... When I first turn on my Wii-U, I assume I have to go through a few initial steps like creating a Nintendo ID (although I will make one on my 3DS first probably). Can I choose to not update the system via download and use the 3D World disc or is the update automatic and you can't cancel/decline it? Sorry, I've never used a Wii-U, so I don't know how the first boot works or anything, lol.

At this sales point, they wouldn't just discontinued it. There are still many options to be had to fix the situation. Remodelling gamepad to become more cost-efficient should be one of them.

My main worryness comes from how consistent will Nintendo can sustained the machine with their IPs, diversity as top priority. They really need to release more info on X and SMTx FE at this point to stop me from worrying.

just bought a wiiu premium and mario 3d world. surprisingly, no shortage here too! it was 199 € and i thought "why not?"

the update was incredibly slow

At my store the Mario & Luigi Wii-U bundle is selling like crazy. I counted like 12 layaways ready to be stored yesterday alone, and a small number of the white Skylander bundle. Nintendo might not be doomed just yet.

If you consider yourself a hardcore gamer, you should consider getting Pikmin, Wonderful101 and Wind Waker for yourself as well. 3D World is also awesome, and works fine in both multiplayer and singleplayer, so that should probably be your first buy. It is also backwards compatible with the Wii which has an fantastic and underrated library, so there might be stuff to check out there as well.

Wii Sport Club updates - Sport
DKTF - platform
Kart - racing arcade
Smash - beat'em up
Bayo2 - action
Yoshi - platform
SMT x FE - SRPG

diversity is there, but I really think they should fill the 2014 with zelda or a surprise metroid to guarantee satisfaction for Wii U owners and attract more old school N fans. Put Animal Crossing Plaza in there for new school casual fans, and that's a good year.

I'm more worried about a drought 14 (fire emblem delay? actually, not a delay because it doesn't have a 14 release schedule up to now...) and a barren 15.

I really think that a solid January Direct is due to Wii U owners and possible newcomers.
Something like the September pre-release one (with Bayo, MH, CoD revealed) and the January one (with FE x SMT, Yoshi announced, plus the confirmation for Smash, Kart and Mario3D for the incoming E3)

Pure party games are the one that you already mentioned. Wii remote plus are required for Wii Party U and Mario&Sonic at the Olympics. Both can be played by 4 players. Wii Party U has 80 minigames and it's very diverse, so it's practically impossible not to find enough minigames for everyone's liking. Mario&Sonic is very nice if you enjoy winter sports in general.

The best party game for a crowd of 3-5 people are the three crazy games from Nintendo Land: Mario Chase, Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing. These are played 1 (the player with the gamepad) against the rest. And they are usual instant hit for gaming parties. It always ends up in screaming and laughing. You can easily lose one night just with these.

All three from above need and come in bundles (all three in US, just Wii party U in PAL) with Wii remotes plus.

Sonic Racing is also nice and can be played in 5 players, but depends if they enjoy racing.

But the best 4 player game available now on the system is Mario 3d World. It's a blast. Chaotic, but great. It's a different game when played in multiplayer.

Wii U is really perfect for local multiplayer parties. I have friends that don't play games at all usually, but come visit us and we have great time together.

Drove an hour to meet a lady on craigslist who sold me a 32GB Premium + SMBU, ZombiU, and Nintendoland for $280. I feel like I got a good deal after I started it up. The screen controller is alright but it still feels like a toy. They could have easily slimmed the thing down and included a better battery.

I'm still amazed at how fucking long it took to update the god damn thing. I have a very fast connection and it felt like I was downloading at 56k. After the hour update I was off and running. The system still needs a lot of updating and refining but I do see a good device in the rough.

Picked one up over the weekend they only had 3 left and I got the last one with the Mario/Luigi Bundle. I snagged Mario 3D Land and the new 3DS Zelda game with Best Buy's Buy 1 get one 50% off as the selection of WiiU games on the promotion was pretty weak IMO (I thought about grabbing Pikmin though).

Updates took ages, 3D world is an amazing game, the controller really seems like a totally useless feature to me and I can see why Nintendo is struggling to move these things. Having said that at this point I am pretty happy with it and I hope Nintendo supports the console properly. I felt that they treated the Wii like a fad product and dropped support when it started to fade (Although I still feel it was worth owning, overall I was dissappointed tehy bailed early on it).

So far I am happy and may pick up a few more games down the line (Nintendo Land, Game and Wario and possibly ZombieU and Wodnerful 101 are the ones that stick out to me). It doesn't look like there's a ton off stuff on the schedule right now but I'm hoping we get some big announcements soon.

Only the bolded one that would be my day one buy. I'll probably buy both Smash and Kart, but those two are just like addition to my library, not something that would glue me to the system. My personal wish is that at some point next year they announce date for SMTx FE and new FE for Wii U. But even still we have to wait for localization before we can even played it.

Nintendo, just release Gamecube VC along with Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn so I can stop worrying!

I can't stress enough how fun Zombi U is in multiplayer. It's the perfect "core" game you can actually play multiplayer with a casual gamer and have great fun, due to the assymetric gameplay using the gamepad. When i first heard about this MP mode, i thought it was stupid, but it's hilarious to do in person. You wife can just place Zombies on the map, and see them tear you to shreds.

Also, it's the perfect game for you in single player and cheap like... something really cheap.

There's a sales pattern I see: Wii U is bought by lots of couples. Just like on 3DS, I expect a significant amount of Wii U's adoption to be driven by girls.

I take it you haven't used Miiverse or the webbrowser? Or off-TV play?

You will soon see the error of your ways.

Weekly PSA for our newcomers: You don´t have to wait for the update. Just cancel it. It´ll load in the background. Just start playing.
Check out some Nintendoland attractions - Miiverse and everything else will be there once you finish.

Not sure if it's the same deal (probably not) but in holland Dixons has a wii-u premium / nintendo land for 199euro.

That's actually of my interests. I missed the amazon black friday uk deal and the spanish one as well. Looks like dixons doesn't do any shipping to Europe, but anything that goes along this price will settle it for me. So in case anybady has seen any retailers doing similar prices, I'd appreciate if the link/info is posted.
