Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

They really need to tone down enemy strength/defense cause as it is now it's kind of annoying to play and constantly getting destroyed by insane birds and other mobs who can 3 hit you even if you have Silver/Rebel armor.

Introducing Lissar's Mod-nado (Xenoblade Monado Mod)!

The mod is meant to give you Monado as a starter weapon (it does not replace your original starter weapon, but will be in the ship inventory along with it). Then you can upgrade it as you play through the game. It's currently upgradeable through Tier 4 (I'll add tiers as they become available to us in the game).

I am using a different way to load mods, rather than editing the original files:

http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/the-proper-way-to-install-mods.41929/

Check this out for more information. It does mean that if you've edited your player.config you'll want to take those edits and put them into the player.config in the Monado folder, but it's much easier to uninstall or replace a mod with a new version with this method.

Enjoy!

I'm having some trouble finding coal on the Glitch home planet as well. I guess I used too much of my early coal on torches. I'm just not finding any in caves or while digging around.

All right, deleted everything to wipe out my modded stuff, re-downloaded for a proper fresh start.

My starting planet has an Apex city immediately to the left of the spawn:
-24571154 / -75130629. Alpha Alifa 6645 IIa

There's a record player in there with some sick monkey beats. I'm not even joking.

SO Lissar...I would have to start a new character fly to my planet and hand it to my main?

I just remember MP is prob better for it.

Also..night is too long.

You could do that yes. You can also create a recipe where you can craft the Monado yourself. Just go into the recipe folder and open up one of the recipe files and change the input items to something easy (like 30 pixels) and have the output be "monado" rather than monado2 or whatever (then of course save it in a separate .recipe file).

I thought about making the Monado craftable, but it seemed against the spirit of it to have infinite Monados.

I think I may have found the coordinates of my old world, there is a file in the Universe folder where the timestamp matches the one of my old character:

alpha_53072235_-50473068_-10753961_6_5 .world

but can someone tell me how to translate these numbers into proper ingame coordinates? There are obviously two sets of numbers too much here :/

Here's a nice easy way to dig descent-friendly tunnels:

ZKDrHqo.png

Just aim two tiles under your character, dig down once to get started, and then you can hold in one direction while keeping your mouse held down. It'll keep digging and make this pattern which is pretty quick to get down without needing much manual intervention. Mostly fallproof and you don't need platforms. (Edit: holding the movement key down might make for shorter "steps" - better to tap it when you need to move over after digging down 6 or so)

Finding sand/gravel pits is the best way to get ore. It's ridiculous. I just got like 50 gold, 30 silver, like 40 coal and a shit load of iron from a reall choice gravel pit, then I find a nice sandpit right next to it with similar results.

...

Then my game crashed.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but first: were planets wiped? Were people able to return to their old stuff? And second: is there a way to get back to a planet without knowing its name but having its coordinates? I didn't know I'd need to have the planet name as well.

I love that you can swim straight away in this, I still find myself avoiding pools of water because I'm used to Terraria's swimming (or lack thereof without the flippers). That and the flashlight, I find myself stopping while exploring just to whirl it around.
Someone mentioned this already, I want something like the familiar wig from Terraria so I can see my Apex's face while wearing a helmet. I hated that all characters ended up looking the same in Terraria until the wig came along, I'm hoping something similar shows up here.

Sure, those are faster once you're done, but this appoach lets you get down there without having to place platforms along the way to get back up. A lot more noob-friendly that way.

Caved and bought this today.

Me too, yesterday.

Liking it so far, although things start far slower than I thought. I quite like the slow burn of gradual progress and discovery, but is the only way usually down? I've started digging a tunnel under my crappy house, but haven't come across any ore besides copper yet...

I want to spend more time up on the surface, but I don't feel like there's much waiting for me other than lots of fights with creatures. Also things feel quite claustrophobic even up there - is there a way to zoom out the default view like in some of your screenshots?

Depending on the planet, there could be villages/dungeons/other settlements. You can also go up!

My starting planet reset..why!?

http://playstarbound.com/how-the-beta-is-going-to-work/

stage1
Progenitor
Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:
You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code
You enjoy providing feedback
You want to leave your mark on the game
You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:
Bugs infuriate you
You don’t like spoilers
You can’t stand losing your save
You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

I get way worse performance on my single player planet than multiplayer for some reason. Trying to kill OP birds with low FPS is impossible.

....I can't stop playing this game..... I need an intervention!

ps. To anyone that puts up coordinates to ANYTHING whatsoever: /fingers in ears, "Lalalalallalalala"

Yeah, even using the normal (non-OpenGL) client, normal zoom, 4.2 GHz i5, GTX 770, I was getting constant 51-52 fps with a single bird around. After the bird was gone, 60 fps.

Has there ever been any guidance from Valve on the legal rules of workshop/mod stuff? With Scribblenauts, I think they kept having to delete anything that used official names, or stuff that even looked too close to Mario, Yoshi, etc.

I would be happy to have a workshop if I made a game, but it seems like an area you would have to worry about if you became a popular game. Maybe companies don't care anymore though!

No youtube..so I can watch @ work?

i haven't seen much for modding tutorial videos yet unfortunately.

Edit: ah, heres one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBVXYWhHK28#t=1199

Excuse my ignorance, but do mods work in MP servers? And if so, how do they appear to players you run into?

they need to be installed on the server and each players computer to view them. id imagine they'll have some thing that auto installs mods when you enter a server, but i don't think that exists yet. haven't done much mp yet to be honest.

Right now the highest DPS i found (after the update) is 11. And it was a tier2 weapon.

A gun would be useful. And hide yourself in a house and let some spaces open where you can shoot at the enemy.
I started a new character, joined a multiplayer server, and got hit by 61-damage elemental-spitting ranged birds at the spawn location. You people weren't kidding that the birds are brutal.

Also, is there a hotkey for beam up/beam down? I haven't yet tried beaming up from inside a cave but I am guessing it might not work.

All Hotkeys are in the logs (I thing its Control yourself book). And as far as i know there is no Hotkey. And Beaming up in a cave doesnt work. I havent played around how it might work (If you simply dig down it could work).

From reddit:
Haven't tried it myself, but those filenames sure do look like the coordinates.

I think I may have found the coordinates of my old world, there is a file in the Universe folder where the timestamp matches the one of my old character:

Before the first wipe I wrote down the coordinates of both the Gaf1 and Gaf2 planets, but none of the file-name numbers in the folder were associated with these coordinates. Hence, I don't think these numbers are proper in-game coordinates. Can anyone confirm or reject this observation?

Somehow, my starter planet is loaded with silver and iron, even gold and a few patches of diamond relatively close to the surface... but very little coal and even less copper. It's made progression absurdly difficult.

I'm going to try jumping to the nearest planet tomorrow and see what I can dig up. I've got a nice little base of operations set up though, screenshots tomorrow.
