Regarding the whole 'character wipe' thing, I have to say that this is one type of game where it's not that punishing to me. For whatever reason, starting out anew isn't nearly as bad as other games I've played.

I think a good part of that is simply because the game is about exploring and finding new stuff and this just further emphasizes that. Now maybe if I was 6 months into my character I'd have something different to say but as it is now, I'm completely fine with them happening as needed.

Honestly I'm just happy to be playing at all. Beta access doesn't normally come around that often for me...

New ore levels are crazy town. On GAF server, starter planet after like 10 minutes I found 386 pieces of silver, 96 gold, 107 iron and 177 copper. Shits crazy.

Iron seems to be scarcer than the others, though. I was wondering if I just had iron-poor planets, but looking at your numbers it seems it's generalized (having iron about as scarce as gold and three times scarcer than silver is "off" to say the least, more so when it's needed in much larger quantities than both of them).

Yeah, but it may have been the environment I was in. I was in an underground beach enviro with lots of sand to collapse and what not. Maybe thats set up to be rich in gold/silver and not in copper/iron.

It can be quite obtuse, but familiarize yourself with some of the wikis and you should be fine. It's more fun to discover and learn with someone so I'd recommend bringing a friend or significant other along for the ride.

Another newbie question. In my first game I was having lots of trouble finding iron. Is there a good strategy for how to mine a planet for tons of ore? Do you scout the surface and then dig down if you see something, or do you just start digging down?

Doing that doesn't really do anything. The lava won't drain out the back wall. No liquid drains like that past a certain point, I think.

Changelog for v. Frustrated Koala 10/12/2013

Hi guys, so last night we pushed the major balance update. We'd tested it for hours and at the last minute a bug crept in that broke crafted weapon damage, making them crazy overpowered.

Hence the name of this version.

That's been fixed. It was an interesting bug. The old leveling system used a "level" specified in each swords configuration file. The new system no longer uses "level", instead each sword is hand balanced. The bug that crept in at the last moment reenabled "level". Given that they are now unused, levels weren't changed from their previous values that went all the way up to level 100, and now that the game is leveled up to 10, they were massively too powerful.

Also..

Uranium, plutonium and solarium now work as fuels
You can now REALLY craft a grappling hook
Boss balance has been tightened even more
Platinum armor is now unlocked on tier 5
You can now 'recapture' pets
some more fixes

My ~150 dps tier 2 axe is now a 10 dps tier 2 axe. Talk about swinging the nerf bat hard.

Although since I thought the hotfix was going to wipe everything again I spent the time just seeing how far down I could go. Ended up with about 130 of iron, silver, and gold ore that I got to keep. Not too bad.

Just this morning she mentioned they are working on a system where they don't have to wipe saves as often, but for that to work it would require another wipe. Tiy even mentioned it a day or two ago. So we may not get a wipe tonight but I bet one is coming real soon. Just a heads up.

Welp, my iron bow doesn't one shot anything on my starting world anymore. I feel weak as shit again, and I'm not so sure that's a good thing. Balance seems to keep swinging wildly in each direction, but then again it is still a beta so it's ok.
