I'm not convinced that it's their last handheld. But going forward, I think handhelds and living room consoles will be launched together, and part of the same ecosystem as complementary experiences.
The only thing I could think of Sony doing this is one that's also a phone. Like the Xperia Play, but they'd actually go all in on it since they wouldn't have also have a dedicated handheld. Though it'd probably be smart to also have a version that isn't a phone, like the iPhone/iPod Touch relationship.

Although the Wii U's sales this month were considerably higher than Patcher's estimates (a reminder to never take him seriously), 220k is still pretty terrible. I'm not sure Nintendo can really do anything at this point. Since the ship is sinking, they need to take a drastic measure like they did the 3DS. Slash the price 1/3 like they did the 3DS -- to $199 -- eat the losses per unit sold, and hope the damn thing gains traction.
Consumers may react to the price cut like it's a clearance, but it worked for 3DS and what else can they do? When Mario Kart 8 hits, they have to do a major drop in correlation and maybe throw in some free VC Ambassador stuff to the 5 million or so existing owners.

If PS4 and Xbone were neck and neck in the US then it still would have been big news after last gen.

i don't really see another Xperia play as being viable. Sony makes nice hardware, but Samsung and Apple will obliterate them before they have a chance to become a serious player. lawsuits, marketing, pick your poison. They can't really compete on that level, and the Sony name doesn't really mean much in the smartphone arena.
Offering "playstation" as a PSN like streaming platform across all tablets and smartphones including iOS is the way to go if they want to compete with mobile, and Apple and Samsung will be invested in their success that way, rather than trying to crush them out of self interest.

Drop the Wii name, it's shit and is obviously causing some sort of road block to the less informed. Nintendo HD or something simple like that for their next system.
The other concern is online, yes MiiVerse is nice but the whole infrustructure needs major investment, even basics like proper account management needs sorting.
I would love them to be successful with a proper powerful system without even format drawbacks such as cartridges for N64, mini discs for GameCube and lack of Blu Ray functionality for Wii U.
I don't want to see people lose jobs but something needs to be done. Elements of the fan base annoy me too with the total unwillingness to accept any sort of criticism, they don't help.

The low price of the Gamecube is what made it possible to reach 21 million units sold. Without that, it would have flopped long before and much worse.
Remember: not saying that Wii U suddenly will start selling like crazy. I'm stating that the improvement will be such that at least GC numbers could be possible. At this point the key is not how to make a turnaround. That's not possible anymore. It's how to squeeze as much money as possible from that failure.

A nice gesture if they ever do cut the WiiU loose would be to put all the first party games up on the store for next to nothing and make that the reason to blow out the remaining hardware inventory.

I think even the most ardent Nintendo apologist would steer clear of this thread. The writing was on the wall since Black Friday. Also, the system sold less than the Dreamcast even after Sega pulled the plug and announced they were going third party. And this is with two full Mario games on the market. In other words, those evergreen titles like Smash and Mario Kart can't come soon enough.
It will. No doubt about it at this point. Wii U isn't even going to sell a quarter of what the Wii's sales were.

That's pretty crap. I wonder if PS3 will ever outsell PS4 one month? Maybe if major shortages hit in January, but otherwise... doesn't seem like it'll be a PS3 vs PS2 situation anyway

yeah, but when the PS4 is $400 compared to $199 (even with TLOU and Batman) you have to think there's got to be a decent amount of crossover there.
I don't think Sony is really concerned about it. the PS3 had a good run, will continue to sell "ok" numbers, but attention will and should shift to the PS4.

Man, the Japanese-focused management and approach to consoles is aboslutely KILLING Nintendo. The Japanese market doesn't really care much about consoles anymore, so taking a Japanese approach should be the LAST thing to do with a new console. Console gamers in general want GREAT online functionality, an achievement system, more mature IPs (ALONG with great family-friendly games like Mario); things like that.
I remember when the Wii U came out. I bought it on launch day. I know many gamers, both friends and co-workers (I work at a large retail store). NOBODY wanted the thing, and the ONLY game any of my friends and co-workers mentioned like they had somewhat of an interest in? Zombi U. That was it! Why? Because the console market has changed, and, whether we like it or not, those mature games are big, and they sell. But Nintendo's console theme collided with a game like Zombi U, which made console gamers not want to buy the system. They knew that games like Zombi U wouldn't be the norm from Nintendo (I know Nintendo didn't actually make the game but it was a Wii U exclusive). It's colorful, family-friendly UI, name, and marketing didn't help matters. It showed the system not as a console for core gamers, but a system for a demographic that no longer has interest in console gaming.
