PERSONA 4 - Golden - 8 hours play time

Peoples love affair with this game...I do not get it. Graphics are pretty decent, the music is GREAT and so is the voice acting and cut scenes. The story seems somewhat engrossing...but...the gameplay is just so boring. I have never played a Persona game so maybe thats why I'm not easily getting into it but I just don't see the appeal.

The dungeons are boring and plain but the combat is pretty fun. Again, its not a bad game by any means but some people treat it like the Vita's Ocarina of Time. Good, not great. MAYBE I just need to put more time in with it. I am after all still getting prompts for new things so maybe i'm just super early in the game still.

I agree with you for the most part. It's certainly a good and enjoyable game. Still need to return to it

Xenogears - 1 hour

Never played this game...Sweet...Mother...of...God...

Could I love this game any more? Probably not. The graphics are old yes but they have this odd painterly feel to them that I really love. The story is also great, as is the music and gameplay. Absolutely fantastic. Funny too.

Does it get better? Can it? $6 for this game? I would pay $60.
The story hasn't even started yet! It's told in layers throughout the game and all comes together at the end, kind of like 999/VLR. At one point you don't think it can get any better but then it keeps getting better, repeatedly again and again until the end. There hasn't really been another rpg story with the same kind of scope since. You may have to read a summary at the end just to realize how interconnected and amazing it is. Music is also some of Mitsuda's (chrono trigger composer) best and most memorable work. If you end up liking the story more than the gameplay you'll love disc 2, if you like the gameplay more than the story you might not though. They ran out of money so several portions in disc 2 are narrated rather than played. Game does have a few slow moments though and the worst sewer dungeon I've ever played.

I did my part for Tearaway. I bought it, spread the word, let people at work play it, etc, etc.

Chances are it will have long legs, and the discount to $20 will no doubt help it. Most of the people I know that own Vitas have bought it.

Just thought I would throw my two cents in on some Vita games i've been playing:

Velocity Ultra - 3 hours play time

I haven't beat it yet, taking my time. I like the mechanics of teleporting and it can get very frantic since you are trying to not get killed by the levels automatic movement. However, my one big gripe is that the enviroments get old quick. It seems like its the same rececyled level over and over and over. A good game, but not great. Maybe great if you got REALLY into trying to beat your scores, etc.

Hotline Miami
- 3 hours play time

Controls take some getting used to but I like the graphics a lot and the gameplay is rock solid. If you can handle the control learning curve (this game is NOT forgiving) then you will enjoy it immensely.

(1) Why are you looking at the environments in Velocity Ultra? :P
Seriously though, I didn't even notice most of them because I was focused on figuring out the placement/path/route etc. It wouldn't matter if every level had different assets, the game is about the core mechanics of finding all the pods, killing all the enemies, and doing so quickly. The quicker you go, the less you notice the environments. ;)
I get what you're saying though, even if I don't think it's that big of a deal. I had a bigger problem with having to repeat the same level 30 times to get perfect because of clipping/hit detection problems with some of the maps and their triggers when you fling the bombs at them.

(2) Hotline Miami ias a lot of trial by error. I could see how someone would think it's hard to pick up -- but after playing the PC version with both kb/m and x360 controller, I found that the Vita just felt right and I was on my way to a platinum in no time (once they patched the bugs out).

(3) P4G has really good combat, but a lot of the draw has to do with interest in the fusing mechanics to see what you can create and getting knew skills for it. Kind of like Pokemon, but not as "kiddie" in design. That and if you get interested in the story and want to know what happens, or actually start to care about the characters and seeing them develop, that's what makes it special. I don't think it's quite the game a lot of VitaGAF hypes it up to be, but I thought it was remarkable nonetheless.

(4) $6 for Xenogears? Where? I swear last time I checked it was still a "premium" SE title, like the Final Fantasy games and retailing for $10.

Yeah, it kinda irked me how everything in disc 2 seems to be fast forwarded in story segments rather than letting me play it. The sewer dungeon sucks balls. I may have died a lot of times had I not grinded a lot for the skills. The newest character there also sucks balls. Added to the fact that the defense is weak compared to others while the monsters in the sewers deal high damages.

I'm gonna get it for this one.

Well I finished Tearaway last night. It seemed like a really short game, I finished it in one day. I really hate it when a game comes alone with so many great things going for it, yet I find myself not interested at all. Sad, I really just wanted it to be over. I think even though I personally didn't like it, it is a great addition to the Vita library.

For me, it's definitely Vita's Ocarina of Time. Again, something I feel I should say:

- The dungeons are bland. That's a fact and I hope Persona 5 is better in this aspect.
- Battles starts feeling better and faster when you get "Ma" skills (elemental damage to all enemies). Battles finish faster, it's easier to make one more turns, since it's activated even if you only hit 1 enemy weakness and the hits are reflected/draines/blocked/failed. First levels, when you don't have Personas with decent skills that part is worse.
- The game gets better everytime you have full control of the calendar. Social Links are nice and some are pretty well done. Most have problems that are kinda common in teenargers, so you may see yourself in those moments.
- The characters in general are really likeable. You'll love almost all of them and you'll want to know more about them.

If it contains so many great things, why not like it? Is it the character design? The world? It's a pretty good game and the shortness of it is really the only flaw I can see in it.

That's not good...

I'm in the same boat with P4G. I didn't get all that far but it wasn't feeling it. If it goes on sale I'll pick it up and give it another crack because the universal praise the game gets has to mean something. But yeah.

I thought I read somewhere that it's going to be going on sale in a week or two? I could be wrong. I'll double check.

EDIT: I went into Persona 4 a Persona noob, and fell in love with it. I ended up investing 137+ hours into it, so it did something right. For me, the music, combat, characters, and story did it for me. And, really, what more can I ask for from an RPG?

ah man - disappointing to hear. what wasn't doing it for you?

to be fair i have plenty of gripes with the game too, but overall thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.

Yep, my mistake. I've just edited my post.

I love all of them except Yukiko. She was that typical person that is in your group of friends because someone wants it but you don't really feel like she provides something of value. Well, outside "hot springs! yukatas! room service! FULL WOOTNESS!" xD

The Vita hardware is definitely superior to the 3DS and I can't take anyone seriously who would even *think* otherwise (even if I must admit to enjoying the 3D effect of the 3DS). But with that being said, it saddens me to see people on here talking about the 3DS library lacking in comparison to the Vita's. I know it comes down to personal preference but, seriously? Both platforms have amazing games and both platforms have some stinkers and shovelware.

Yep. The games are rather diverse on both platforms with the Vita having less games but have more stellar ones in general. Let me give an example. The 3DS has 10 games 4 of which are pretty good while the Vita has 6 games and 4 of which are good. They have equal number of great games but the 3DS has more capacity to have more variety and a larger userbase so that the 6 not so stellar games can still have good sales. The Vita doesn't have this back up plan so developers are very wary of this.

One thing's for sure is that the Vita hardware is superb and I'd rather play games on the Vita than the 3DS except for those games that have dual screens as an integral part of the experience.

Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 vs PSP (War of the Lions), which one should I get?

Anyone have opinions on the 'lag' when using items or casting spells? I'm leaning towards the original version at the moment.

You just reminded me I got the PSP version thanks to PS+ Never played Tactics before

I had it for the PSP-2000 way back when, and while the lag times were a little annoying the new job classes were worth it. They have added cutscenes as well and a fresh translation of the game. They also added Balthier to it as well.

Seriously, it's insane. The way I see it though the Vita has a lot more western support with ports (AssCreed/Need For Speed/Shooters/etc.) so some people might enjoy the Vita a lot more for that, but I'm of the opinion that if you're into handhelds, you're probably interested in Japanese developed games. The latter half of the PSP/DS life cycle was completely abandoned by western developers who had moved to mobile and pretty much every major title was Japanese output since.

If you belong to the latter group then it's so weird to hear that the 3DS doesn't have the type of games you want to play. I feel like a lot of those people would suddenly want to play the games if they were on the Vita instead.

Even if pokemon/mario aren't your thing (I don't like 1st part Nintendo games at all), I don't see why someone wouldn't like playing
- resident evil revelations if they like shooters like uncharted/ killzone
- kingdom hearts 3d/ tales of the abyss 3d if they're begging for hearts/innocence R localizations (which are pretty bad in the first place)
- bravely default if they like jrpgs/square enix
- fire emblem if they like fft/tactics ogre which were so popular on the PSP
- monster hunter if they like soul sac/GE
- smt4/soul hackers if they like smt games and persona
- phoenix wright if they're looking forward to dangan ronpa and like vlr/999
- etrian odyssey if they're looking forward to demon gaze
- senran kagura if they like shinovi vs
And so on and so forth

I completely agree about hardware and think it's a perfectly reasonable to not want to spend an extra $200 to access that library. But as far as games go it's not a matter of platform. These are the same great Japanese developers from last gen who are still making the same great games. It's bananas to me that 3DS games somehow aren't for them when Vita games are.

The translation had mixed reviews though. Some liked the more gritty original.

Console Wars™.

The original translation was a lot more gritty, but by the time it came out on PSP I had played the original japanese version + the US version many times over. I was more into it simply for the new job classes and content. I wasn't to miffed over the new translation since I have most of the story memorized through so many playthroughs.

how does tactics ogre look on the vita?

It would look just like the PSP version. Its not like the Vita really does anything special to make it look all that better and such. :)

I remember that game keeping me company when was in the hospital for a week. Good thing to keep one sane haha.

They did a real good job with the PSP version though and was quite happy with it overall.

Damn, the Konami rep (a published that likes to gives a shit to the vita) saying that New Little King Shit Story sold more than Tearaway depress me to no end.

Because they have digital numbers of a Sony published game.

I couldn't even get passed the second battle because the slowdown was so horrible. Not having that b/s.

Throwing a rock should not cause so many problems.

PSP version is terrible. I can never recommend it to anyone. The extra stuff isn't worth the bullshit. PSone ftw.

So, TWD Season 2 is coming to Vita, just a little later than on the other consoles.

Seems they didn't wanted to wait.

Fine by me, I don't care until the whole season is done and hopefully they do a retail release.

Well, they already announced it and it is selling very good for such a late port thanks to the bundle. TWAU is also confirmed, just hope Game of Thrones will also make its way to the Vita.
Baffling that SCEA didn't made a Tearaway bundle considering how well the TWD is selling.

That thread about US Tearaway sales is really depressing me... I guess i'm going to sleep, it's quite late here and I don't feel like I'd do anything interesting after those bad news...

Why should it depress you? You liked the game, bought it and enjoyed it. Its not your job to market the game to the masses, asides from just discussing it on forums. Dont let shit like that bother you or else you never are going to enjoy anything with gaming, seriously.

You want the devs to be happy? Enjoy the title as thats obviously the reason why they created it, not to do gangbusters like the latest pewpewpew of the hour. If they wanted money as the main goal they wouldnt have done something as unique as this.

Is it because I changed MC that the friend app shows that I am playing some games for the first time even though I have played them previously? Such as DoA5plus and Killzone. Weird.....

What's the best way to migrate from a smaller memory card to a bigger one? Backup using the PC Content Manager Assistant & then restore to the bigger one?

I don't have much on my 8gb card (just got Vita and have only played Tearaway and downloaded a couple games) but I just want to make sure I do it right

Yup, backup using Content Manager then restore on the bigger card. That's what I did going from 4 to 32.

Virtua Tennis 3 on PSP vs. Virtua Tennis 4 on Vita

VT4 is one of the platform's best ports. It's content complete, 60fps, native res, and has additional content.
