Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

It really isn't. It's not an optimized port, but it's certainly not shit. It's fully playable and most normal people will be more than happy with it.

I've almost 100%ed it on Wii U. Its got some minor slowdown in larger cities but you almost never notice it. It doesn't have any screen tearing and the lighting's quite gorgeous. It does have some aliasing issues but overall its very playable. I've talked to friends that have the same version and they all agree. It seems like the only ones shitting on the port are DF and people who don't own the port themselves.

I started to waver on picking up a Wii U based on sales numbers and then realized that I was just being silly. The perceived value is there already for me with what had been released and what's coming soon.

So I picked up the Walmart Mario/Luigi bundle deal with the $25 GC and then the Toys R Us B1G1 40% off for the family Christmas present. A little looking around went a long way.

Yup, it really doesn't matter what the overall sales are if you think it's worth it for what's already on the table =).

Framerate is shit, there's no other term for it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QGNeLufdAU

Posting a video from Youtube, which has a gimped framerate to begin with, only to have it still look on par with the other versions with the exception of that graph at the bottom is not a great telling of the accuracy of the test.

I'm not openly calling out DF's sourcing here, as they probably are accurate, but this video doesn't plead the case properly.

Ignore the video, just look at the numbers. Of course they are accurate. This version is only for people complete oblivious to framerate. Anyway, I don't want to derail this fine thread, I'll keep it at that.

Upon further research, DF also said Trine 2 played like shit on Wii U until Frozenbyte had to correct them. Now I'm starting to wonder about DF's methods regarding Wii U. Not saying conspiracy or anything, but considering my experience playing AC4 as well at the video looking the same in comparison despite the numbers, it makes me wonder if there's a flaw in testing this stuff.

Another question: have you played the Wii U version? Or are you just going by DF's numbers alone? It seems like you're basing your opinion on these numbers without actually experiencing the game yourself.

Effort in porting takes time and more dev costs. Even Ubisoft won't do that...it was lucky enough that they didn't cancel the game on Wii U to begin with. Thankfully the game is pretty good on the Wii U even with the frame rate, at least it's consistently hovering around 22fps and not sporadic like Batman AC.

Keep in mind also that these Xbox 360 ports are not using the Wii U DSP for sound but wasting a CPU core for it, not using much or any edram of the Wii U but delegating things like texture fetching to the main system memory ala Xbox 360 (Xbox 360 coders have to do this since the system only has 10MB of edram). This makes these ports run inferior despite having usually better picture quality and no screen tearing due to the more modern/powerful GPU in the Wii U. It makes sense when you think about it.....better graphics......but worse performance?

Do I really have to wait a couple of hours to continue setting up the console? I'm currently charging the gamepad and I may have to wait 2-2.5 hr for it to charge so I can contue setting up the console.

Huh ? You can use the Gamepad while it is charging.

Like you can use a 3DS while its charging.

Wow, that AC4 framerate is pretty terrible.

Though frankly, the mere fact that we're even having this discussion, struggling to compare the WiiU version to the versions on 7-8 year old systems, is a little sad.

But then, that's not the reason to own the system, anyway.

FINALLY GOT A wii u 32gb for 250 at walmart..

do i need that classic controller ?

Depends on what you want to do.

For Wii U retail, eShop and VC games (Anything you play in Wii U mode)... everything supports the game pad. For other options for single player or for multiplayer, most games support the Wii Mote+ (some don't even need the +) or Pro Controllers (The new, wireless/stand alone one.. not the Wii one).

If you boot into Wii mode to play Wii games, WiiWare games, or VC games on your Wii store, you can use all the old options: Wii Mote/Classic Controller/etc... Gamepad and Wii U Pro Controller will not work.

oh man. I just looked at it, and there is no way to put in a lan cable.
=(

Nah, you don't need it. Most games can be played with the gamepad. However you should consider the pro controller. It has amazing battery life. Something that's lacking on the gamepad.

well, the only reason i bought this was for xenoblade, a couple other wii jrpgs, tatsunko vs capcom, monster hunter tri ulti, and some of the mario games.

can i just play games on the gamepad without having to turn on my monitor ? how do i do this ?

Depends on the game. I know for sure MH3U can be played without a monitor. Wii games can be played with the gamepad but you'll need a separate controller.

If you're planning on playing all those Wii games, then yeah I'd recommend getting a classic controller. You can play them on the gamepad (without a tv or other monitor) but you will need to use the classic controller or Wii-chuck as your controller and the gamepad as the screen.

wow. i get disconnected every so often when I'm updating.

its currently at 1/8th of the completion bar....

also, can i just buy a wii classic controller instead of the wii u pro controller ? it is cheaper that's why....

There's supposed to be an update to 4.0 on Mario 3DW.
That would have saved me 26 hours :p

ok. i've seen pictures of people bringing these consoles with them on the road and just playing games on the gamepad.

how do i do that ?

what I mean is, can I just play the games, including xenoblade and all the jrpgs I want on the wii u's gamepad without ever having to connect a HDMI cable from the wiiu to my monitor ?

sorry if its very technical.

*Sigh*... It's nice that you are enjoying the game, but the numbers don't lie. It is a shit port that runs below 30fps a lot. And it doesn't look better than the PS360 versions. No reason to sugarcoat. If you have low standards, fine. But there is not reason to pretend it's a great version or anything. And no, people were not amazed.

Have you played it or are we discussing an youtube video?
The best version of the game runs at maximum 30fps, so of course if there are framedrops it goes below 30 fps, where should it go?
But the game is not unplayable. It drops frames in the cities when you fight or run from 6-7 guards. It doesn't have control problems because of that, as DF stated. And if the numbers don't lie, opinions built on numbers surely can be contradicted. As for example the fact that 2-4 fps less are much more disruptive than screen tearing (see Splinter Cell).
And again I just post my impression on the game. It does look great. I have screenshots to back up that.
I might have low standards as my hobby is to play games and not analyse them. If you are bothered by them feel free to ignore me.

People on the road playing with just the gamepad will be playing Wii U games, not Wii games like Xenoblade. You can output Wii games to the gamepad so it acts like a mini TV, no HDMI connection required (correct me if I'm wrong here, people) but you still need to use a Wii controller of some kind.

So have the updates fixed the issue with us not being able to direct sound from the multiAV while the image is coming from the HDMI? Playing 3D World with my TV's speakers makes baby jesus cry and vomit.

I bought a Speaka Audio Extractor HDMI for my stereo, because I have an analogue amplifier. Works great!

Yes it's fixed, go to system settings -> display option and change the sound setting to NO-HDMI, you just need a Wii composite/component.

BTW guys can you recommend me some indie games from the eshop?

Just bought wii u mario luigi bundle .

Any more game recommendation??

I'm bit suprised that the bundle does not include wii mote

Is Splinter Cell: Blacklist good on Wii U or does it have benefits on PS3/360? It's on sale today at my place but only today.

Best console version you could be playing unless you really want offline co-op as the Wii U version only has the online co-op. It has some nice gamepad integration for Sam's gadgets and off-tv support which is nice. It also has no screen tearing and runs at actual 720p as opposed to the lower res PS360 versions.

Sure, numbers don't lie. But what about context? How about actual user experiences? How about the fact that DF seems to compare cutscenes instead of gameplay where those frames actually matter and people who have actually played it saw no meaningful impact? What about DF ignoring the Wii U version having superior effects in some areas (I specifically recall the waterfall effect)?

But hey, sure. Live by the Foundry, die by the Foundry.

By far the best SP version it seems.

Is this true? lol
That means we can see quite a bit of optimization the coming years... should 3rd party devs still make games for the platform that is.

Well, if you read through the topic, you'll find that the games recommended most on top of what you mentioned are:

Pikmin3
Zelda WW
Wonderful 101
Super Mario 3D World
Lego City Undercover
Monster Hunter Tri
Deus Ex: HR - DC

Exclusives I'd recommend are Lego City, Nintendoland (best for multiplayer but there's some good single player stuff as well), Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD and Mario 3D World.

If you want a party game as well, Wii Party U comes with a Wii remote+ (I think that bundle's still around), as does Mario and Sonic at Sochi Olympics 2014 (although I think that's a US only bundle).

Super Mario 3d World, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover and Nintendo Land (you can get the bundle if you need a wiimote)

I had a wii u this time last year but ended up trading it in due to the lack of games at the time. Now it's difficult to decide what games to get! I have my eye on W101, zombiu and rayman. Xenoblade will be mine for chtistmas (I played this already, never completed it as I spent far too much time side questing so going in for round 2)

WW is excellent and looks amazing. SM3DW is pretty good as well (I am yet to experience mp) and Pikmin is great. I have decided to ditch my Sony set (ps3,vita), ignore next gen hype and go with Nintendo. 3ds to compliment the wiiu? Any thoughts?

Booted up my WiiU for the first time yesterday, I like it. Finished the first 3 worlds of SM3DW and it's a lot of fun, but I'm not blown away yet. I like the Miiverse integration though, didn't know this game had this kind of message system. I like reading random msg's/drawings after I finish a level. So many 'man this game is easy' posts.

I bought the Mario bundle, so I'll continue with NSMBU/Luigi after I finish this. Then Pikmin/101 and maybe WW HD. The latter is pretty damn tempting, even if it's not really my favorite Zelda.

Question about the Mii plaza: so can you just not move your Mii around in the screen filled with icons/people? The only thing you can do is zoom in and out it seems. It's pretty weird, seems like a pointless screen. The Miiverse, with the different communities, that I really like.

If you're enjoying the Wii U you honestly cannot go wrong with a 3DS, the first party lineup is just superb. If you don't desperately need the money though maybe hang on to the Vita, I've found that a great machine to turn to when feeling over-Nintendo'd.

Got my wife to play Mario 3D with me, and this game is great for accommodating to non-gamers.

Really tempted to get WW, but there's so many 3DS games I also want.

Wii U/3DS competition

So far the Wii U is looking really sleek and I'm enjoying NSMBU so far. I wish I could get the remote to work with my DirecTV box.

I played the Wonderful 101 demo, it gave the option on difficulty, I skipped passed easy and went to normal and ended up dying twice. I didn't do anything cool looking and I'm still trying to understand when and how to do anything. Seems like a really fun game but I'll have to practice more.

What's the use of pushing X? Team attack didn't seem to do much, only the A moves seemed to do damage.

Is ZL and using Y to dash around the main defense options? If so I'll really need to get used to using those because I was getting my ass whopped.

I'm really enjoying what I've played so far and the potential the system has. Just like having Wii/PS3, I think WiiU/PS4 compliment each other well when you want a different gaming experience.

I think he has a point, just because I think that this style of gameplay really suits the portable format. Being on a train (etc) picking out levels feels good and tense. The WiiU version actually feels too laid back for me. It's an excellent game but it lacks something.

There were many moments I laughed out loud in the 3DS version and I loved the end boss battle with Bowser. Here I didn't laugh as much and the end battle was a bit lackluster, especially since some of the previous bosses were actually pretty cool. There is some superb design going on in the game but for me it was just a bit too easy for me. At least until bonus levels where the difficulty suddenly ramps up quite unexpectedly. I think the 3DS version was just more experimental in nature despite some excellent power ups in this one.

Having said this I've never played it in multiplayer so perhaps the homoginised nature of the level design is completely understandable. It's hard to balance that many things.
It's still one of the years best games though.

Hit up the TW101 OT and look for videos by a guy named "saur" on youtube. Free your mind, and the rest will follow :D

My boyfriend wants me to play WW, I'm on the fence since I've never met a Zelda game that didn't bore me.
Now, I know I'm a heretic but I kinda agree. I'm curious if you've tried Link between worlds as I'm considering picking it up.

The faster gameplay and simpler dungeons seem to fix my biggest issues with the series.

Can't say this enough, Saur's videos made me buy the game ... the fighting system is so rich in this game, much more involved and refined than it may appear at first ... takes a lot of practice though.

This is interesting, because playing the demo it didn't feel deep at all.

You can use the game pad or Wii remote to scroll around the plaza and select the other Miis. Each mii has a post from miiverse that will appear if you select it.

The games can also be launched using their icon in WaraWara plaza if you own it, although its easier to just use the other screen.

Saur's W101 System Breakdown

I played through the whole game on normal just button mashing (died a lot!) without doing team attack, throws, or combos. I watched saur's videos afterward and realized I'd being doing everything all wrong, haha.

Its actually possible to do the combos and moves he shows in the demo so watch his videos and then you can try it out for yourself. The game really needed a fighting game style tutorial /lab mode like what Tekken has because it doesn't properly explain the system to players just though the game.

Woah, is this true?

Why are they doing that? Is it quicker that way?

It's a shame developers won't put the effort into using the Wii U's full power.

On a similar note, does anybody know how good CoD Ghosts is on the Wii U?
How's the frame rate during multiplayer now days?

I saw one video of the frame rate during multiplayer that was going back between 45-60fps, but at the end of the video it was staying at a consistent 60fps. However, this video was posted 1 day before a patch that I believe had improved performance, so I'm wondering what the framerate is like now.
