Other M probably had a bigger budget than the Prime games, sold less than all of them and only reached that .9 million sales when its price was slashed drastically within a few weeks of its release. It absolutely was a bomb.

I agree it didn't kill the franchise though, there's been just as long a gap between the last major DKC game as there has the last major Metroid game, yet people consider the former over-saturated at this point. It's just people being over-dramatic and Nintendo doing a crap job at acknowledging the series' 25th anniversary. Nintendo may have originally been planning Sakamoto and the Ninja Team partnership to lead to another sequel by now on the Wii U if their first game didn't go over the way it did though.
 
Luigi is more visually distinct and much more important to his respective franchise than Dark Samus is to hers anyway.

Not really. He's a slightly skinnier Mario. Maybe he is with his Poltergust. Dark Samus shares Samus's basic shape, but has some major differences depending on the appearance. In Prime 2 she looks skeletal and organic, to the point that she even has exposed feet. In Prime 3 she looks compact and sleek (A lot like Samus's light suit from Prime 2). Then there's the final confrontation in Prime 2 where she looks like this.

As for importance to the franchise, the only Metroid rep more important to the franchise is Ridley, and we've all accepted that he should be first pick. Dark Samus is second unless you think Mother Brain (real OG Mother Brain, not that Melissa trash) can fit in as a playable character.

It's the Zero Mission design, not the Super Metroid one. The armor didn't have chest lights in Super Metroid.

Yes, depending on what they do with her. If they're lazy, they could just have her be a Samus clone that summons more Samuses. If they want something interesting, they could have it be a battle against corruption ala the Feral Wyvern Virus in Monster Hunter 4 (When you get hit you slowly get corrupted, beat up Dark Samus to remove corruption, corruption cripples your abilities like reversing your controls or something). She could also turn invisible, which is always a nice screw you.

The main issue is that she's small and hunches over a lot; most of the bosses in Smash Bros are much larger so that they're not hard to hit. Her fusion with the Aurora or her original Metroid Prime form seem more suitable for a boss battle because they're much larger.
 
If we get a new Metroid character, I really hope it's someone from the Metroid Prime: Hunters rogues gallery. I mean hell, considering how similar / deliberately cookie-cutter the extra hunters were for the sake of the multiplayer sandbox, you could debatably even have a "Prime Hunter" character slot with several Trace / Kanden / Noxus skins, etc.

I'd rather Dark Samus stick to being some kind of Adventure Mode boss. I mean, considering most of the Big Five have some kind of "dark / shadow" rogues gallery (Shadow Mario, Dark Samus, Dark Link, XD001...) it seems like it'd be pretty easy to incorporate them into a more universal, but dynamic Adventure Mode.

That being said, pushing the envelope with boss battles and using multiple franchises would be a welcome addition. A dual Shadow Lugia / Ridley fight could be really interesting.

EDIT: Also, fun fact - if you want to go by tenure, the second-most likely candidate for Smash following Ridley would be Anthony Higgs, due to his cameo in Super Metroid.

Yeah but, Dark Samus is most consistently shown in variations of armor that looks slightly different than Samus. That final form from one game is not how she is depicted throughout the majority of the prime trilogy.

Besides Luigi wearing different colors from Mario he is also taller, skinnier and has a different looking face.

If a hazard toggle tuns Smash into All-Stars, Dark Samus would turn Smash into a Vita exclusive. Hopefully the new Metroid game will introduce a new character that is better suited for Smash.

Dark Samus is Metroid Prime -- or at least Prime's reincarnation after it assimilates the properties of Samus' suit. Very important character.

Phazon is such a neat metroid element, i really hope theres a level that is based around it some ways, or at least dark samus moveset should revolve around it. Blasts could be aimed and leave it as a hazard for a brief period of time, or foes could be covered in it and take damage similar to the lip stick. Man, i need to play the prime trilogy again
 
Sakurai will swerve us all and reveal that the boxing ring that looks suspiciously like something from Punch Out!! Wii is actually a Mii stage.

I included Luigi's face under "general skinniness", but you're right that I did forget that he's an inch or two taller.

Also, stop saying that Luigi looks more different when he's just a skinnier and taller Mario. It's ridiculous, especially since we're comparing a character who started as a palette swap to one who was given 4 different 3D models, each with a drastically different appearance.

I just realized that the entire "It's just another Samus" argument is moot anyway when we have Toon Link already confirmed in all his Linkish glory.

But I'm pretty confident that Mac is in because of the boxing stage so I'll say Saki.

Pokemon Trainer that has Blaziken, Mewtwo and Lucario under his wing. Represents Pokemon Red/Blue, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, Diamond/Pearl and X/Y(since final smash is Mega-Evolution).

Also, that boss battle is the best. Especially fighting Meta-Ridley on the Falcon Flyer,
 
K. Rool, Ridley, or Mewtwo. I'd be ecstatic if even one of them made it in. Mewtwo at least has a decent chance I think, and it's a toss-up with K. Rool. I doubt Ridley will make it in, as much I want him to.
 
Those are some good wants. I'm seriously down for some Saki, and of COURSE Mewtwo. Oh how I love him. I feel he should definitely remain his own character though. Not a fan of him being under a Trainer. He's his own man!
 
Ridley, Waluigi, Shulk, Ghirahim, Ray series Custom Robo, Hades, Waddle Dee/ Galacta Knight.

In that order.

Oh and some Fire Emblem character. You'd never guess who it would be.

Definitely agree with that. He's not only iconic on his own, but intimidating, and a little bit sinister too. I'd love to play as him again.
 
Out of any Nintendo-owned character, my most-wanted right now is probably Rhythm Monkey, or any Rhythm Heaven character in general. I'd be completely okay if all the newcomers in Smash 4 were from as-of-yet unrepresented franchises.

Ridley would be amazing, too, but only if it's not his ugly Other M design. And I have to consider that if he's in Smash 4 he won't be put into Project M, which would kind of be a shame...

All ya'lls that want Mewtwo really ought to give Project M a shot. They absolutely nailed him there, and he's a blast to play. Dat float into Dair spike...
