Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I nearly froze to death in a slime cave, but a single piece of snow chest armor seems to take care of any cold environment I have seen so far. If that doesn't help you can use the whole suit, but I think the chest armor is fine.

Two questions:

1. After a patch hits, if I go to a planet I haven't been to before, will that generate that planet using the new stuff, or do I have to make a completely new character?

2. I think I heard someone say each starmap is a one-time use thing. Do I only get one use to go to the beta sector, and if I go back to alpha I need another map for beta again?

(Someone please tell me if I should spoiler any of the above -- as far as I know it's pretty basic and well-known)
I donno about the first one, but the second one basically has you use the starmap mk2 as a consumeable, like a book. It adds the Beta sector to your map and you'll always be able to travel there if you have the fuel and you're on the same character.

I'm on the fence about buying this game, I found terraira to be some odd controlling and less exciting minecraft for the ~20 minutes I played it. Would I like starbound, as it seems more interesting?

Just came to post this. 255MB and nothing on their Twitter account as of yet it and nothing in the launcher.

is this the first update to come in under 500mb?

if so i wonder if they got the code a bit more optimized so that updates aren't always huge (would be nice if tweaks and what not could come in under 100mb though as a lot of this stuff shouldn't require a huge update)

You really should play Terraria with a couple of friends. At first it might seem like a "2D Minecraft" but there's so much more to it than that. It just takes a while for it to get started. There's so many awesome weapons and gear with cool abilities later on.

I had the same feeling as you the first time I played it, so I just ignored it and didn't really care since it was only 2.5 or something on Steam. Then a couple of friends got it and I joined them and I had 40 hours played after a few days..

welp after i craft this ocarina ima go to bed
got all my mods sans planet mods working
until someone makes a guide to this modinfo stuff im staying away from it

It's unfortunate that this particular update had to come this weekend. With Ludum Dare on I simply don't have the time to update my mod to be usable. Sorry guys. :<

Man, the new mod installation support is awesome. I've already updated my mod to support it, so check it out.

How does it work? The mods I been using I just had to do what I always did to get them working...

Your mod works, all other I have work. Just have to edit player configs and bootstraps again. If I can figure out how to package your collection for the new system I will send you a link.

i prefer the miningmech but wow that is simple
should make it much less frustrating getting mods to work
edit:planet mods dont work though till Shadow and Magitek update theirs

You just extract the "Chomper" folder inside the zip to your mods directory. The newly implemented .modinfo files point to the folder for dependencies so you no longer have to modify the bootstrap or player config files. In fact I just noticed that they added the "../mods" line to the bootstrap in the update.

Game desperately needs a "beam down" beacon so you can change where you beam to.

I hate traversing halfway around a planet and getting killed by something.

Can I transfer items to a new character in single player? Mainly just want to give all my tools and work surfaces to the new char.

Yup.

I don't know what changes that are character specific that literally requires a new char, but I do know the characters share the same universe. So as an alternative, it helps to build a base in Beta Sector. No point putting it in Alpha, as you can use your first planet as a means of getting to beta. And it takes more effort trying to supply each new planet by an old char whenever there's a patch, than to have the new char reach the base. Also easier to use an old char to reacquire the necessary materials to progress the new char and just leave the extras in the base.

Most mods should have installation instructions for the "old" method of installation. I'd hope that they'll all be updating to the new format ASAP though.

i know the old method of bootstrap+editing config files but less editing=more playing=less me missing anime cause mod frustration

If I could find the files used for the teleporting sequence I might be able to figure something out, but I can't seem to find them at all.

I'm drunk as shit, so could anyone point me to the nearest patfch notest. I just updated my server, not sure what it affected.

Man you should have played Terraria more than 20 minutes.. game dosnt even get fun till you get a grapple hook early on.

I like this so far but its not satisfying the itch like terraria, but I feel like when its updated enough it will.

Well I found the files, and the parts of a config file that specify teleporting time in/out, but can't find what determines the coordinates on the planet where you beam down to. Someone more savvy than I will probably come up with this first.

I don't think they can be crafted, only looted from planets.

Some of the more "unique" chests have a chance to include a blueprint for that chest in their loot table. That's the only way to craft chests as far as I know.

Also, I'm in tier 2 and can't find the new portable pixel printer anywhere in my crafting tables.

You'll need to use a Starmap Upgrade Mk2 again if you had done it prior to the patch. Doing so will add the recipe to your table.

I've done so, but can't find it in my wooden crafting table or my metalwork station. Am I missing something else? I did get the notification of new blueprints though.

I just checked and it looks like it requires a Robotic Crafting Table as the recipe doesn't appear on the normal one for me either. So you'll need to defeat the second boss first it seems.

Do have this steel block item for 50 pixels on your metalwork station? Not sure what it's about.

That's actually in your normal crafting interface and it may be an unintentional side-effect of the portable printer(as in, it accidentally slipped through). The portable printer unlocks a number of blueprints for your basic crafting on the go that use pixels including various blocks like hi-tech blocks and plating. Also includes upgraded bandages and a superior campfire(it gives off more heat than two campfires - great for cold places!).

Anyone knows what is maximum resolution for .png ship file? Edit: about 2000 width - not sure about height
Or how to force game to use few different files (like human space station)?
Edit: like that

Code:
"backgroundOverlays" : [
    {
      "image" : "dropshipUL.png",
      "position" : [0, 140.5]
    },

    {
      "image" : "dropshipBL.png",
      "position" : [0, 0.5]
    },

    {
      "image" : "dropshipUR.png",
      "position" : [241.75, 140.5]
    },

    {
      "image" : "dropshipBR.png",
      "position" : [241.75, 0.5]
    }

The server has been wiped/reset, and is now back up.

Looks like they added a MAX PLAYER LIMIT to the config file, but I increased that just in case.

I'm still only in beta sector, so probably no need for me to wipe.

I've been having some crappy luck with finding interesting stuff however! The most interesting stuff I've found are like... flesh blocks. No legendary weapons, heck no weapons better than what I can craft in the beta sector, no underground bases even - but a few above ground ones.

I'm not expecting this to be diablo or anything, but is it just me? Do other people often find cool shit, or does it happen more often in later sectors?

I have found exactly one interesting thing, a tier 2 sword in alpha sector. A random drop from an enemy.

Yeah the loot is often disappointing.

For those who havent noticed changes in the new update:

1) There's now mini-biomes on planets now. My starter world is forest type, and about halfway around the planet, there's a desert biome. Before, planets were only one main type.

2) Going underground, coldness definitely kicks in quicker.

3) Seems like they updated the random monster generator, I'm seeing new "parts" on monsters I havent seen before.

I have to agree. I'm enjoying the treadmill, but the mine forever to get enough coal to go to another planet to mine forever to get enough coal to go to another planet to mine forever is not entirely fulfilling.

The foundation of the game is super rock solid though, so that's very encouraging.

Make a new character, see what planet they're on, fly to that planet with old character, drop the drill and a few other things you want to keep in a crate.
.

So a bunch of people explained this kind of stuff to me last night but this is one thing I'm not sure of. When they say make a new character/world, can't you literally visit the same planet with a new character? or would that basically be only keeping what you put in a chest and everything else would update and have the proper balance and changes.
