Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I mean like...energy per shot and dmg per shot.

Does it matter if tis 1H or 2H?

Do you run out of energy while killing things? If no, then the energy consumption is good.
Do things die? If yes, then the damage is good.
Do you want to hold something in your other hand at the same time? If yes, then look for one-handed guns.

Guys, can I play this game and pretend I'm the Doctor? Because I just started watching Dr. Who and now I really kind of want to buy this game for that reason alone.

Well... a Doctor who can only travel through Space, just not Time.

And you're gonna need a Tardis. So just use one of the mods and make one for your Ship.

And you'll probably need a Sonic Screwdriver. Someone can probably make a mod for that too.

Probably in the next patch there will be an option from your ship to teleport either to the planet you're orbiting or a home planet you manually set, which addresses the point of abandoning the cool house you just built to move to the next sector.

What I want to see is finding pieces of a treasure map from randomly generated loot that, once united, point to a system or planet (that you can't just jump to because for all intents and purposes doesn't exist until you've pieced together the map) that contains a unique dungeon with unique loot and a boss. Maybe 1 or 2 of these per sector, and this will encourage people to play multiplayer to swap map pieces.

A couple of days ago I actually had something happen like that. I joined a group with someone who was on main GAF planet. I was out exploring in a different area/sector. I highlighted the person's name and selected beam to ship. From there I teleported down to GAF main planet surface, not realizing what had happened. At this point I was able to beam back to my ship using the usual method.

Not sure if it was a bug or what, but it was cool. Makes me think eventually there will be this type of functionality.

That is strictly multiplayer related. I believe they are just going to code that behavior into the game.

Good enough for me!

No, depending on the actual damage being done to you, shields will either reduce, or just outright block/nullify damage. Its a matter of trial and error, honestly, but you can at least get a general idea by looking at the rarity shield

Then I think I got an awesome shield off an enemy drop. Lowered my damage from ~150 to 1 damage.

I prefer dual-wielding to shield and sword and two-handers. Your DPS is higher, and since you're swinging so fast enemies can't get close (which is great when you're lagging). I want to try gun-shield as well, but I have no luck finding guns.

What's the maximum amount of players on a server? If there is one that is, the FAQ pretty much just states this:

Will there be multiplayer?

Starbound is cooperatively and competitively multiplayer, the number of players is entirely up to the server and we’re working hard to ensure the server is built with server communities in mind. Don’t worry– you can also play solo!

So, limitless?

Biome I'd like to see: "Orbitals", or ring worlds. Basically the same as regular worlds, only the sky would rotate around the upper-middle point of the screen rather than the lower-middle and you'd have a solid metal base followed by space rather than magma at the bottom of the map.

I "think" we can do max 30 players on the GAF server.

Considering how there's no real way to do an official headcount with the server software, its just a guess for now.

And it looks like recent updates seemed to have messed up that limit for some reason, because the server seems to start to take a crap when we get near 15 players.

I use gun shield and sword/shield.

I never actually thought about dual wielding.

Well there is definitely something they must do around progression in this game the way it is now.

It's too linear, you only have to spend the time you need to gather enough resources to craft a full set of armor and a weapon + the boss item and you can easily cruise into the next one and repeat. (no wonder some call it very grindy)
There is no need or incentive to stay in a sector for more than that time, and that makes the sector system itself feel really out of place.
I'm not sure coating that in some quests will definitely make it better.

There is also no real incentive to settle down on a low level planet, simply for the fact that killing mobs on higher level planets gives you a more steady income of pixels without having to travel back (the Teleoprt option might tone that down but still)
The coming ship upgrades adding more space to the ship will also only make that worse.

Storage items are all over the place, the size that they take when placed in the world should define their storage capacity, but as it is right now the modern lockers seem to be the best way of mass storing things.

They still have plenty to do on their plate :P

Speaking of teleporting, can you move where you teleport down on a planet?
Not yet. Hoping it's something they add soon.

Next on the agenda, environmental hazards, extreme weather, meteor showers, acid rain, gravity variation, non breathable atmospheres + more
Hell yes.

There's a stamina bar?

Energy bar, the green one under HP. Bows, guns and techs consume energy as they're used. I think shields halt energy regeneration, though it might just be that the ones I've used have consumed just enough to make it look that way.

Oh, I thought that only tech burned through that stuff. Never look at it when I have a bow but I'll keep that in mind this time around since I made a new character to play with. I guess iron to steel is such a huge upgrade that it doesn't keep up and I overlook it.

ok i just started playing and after 6 hours, i just created a beacon that doesn't do anything. the only loots i've found was non tech stuff. how the hell am i going to find or make fuel? do i have to play this for weeks? i even went straight for like 2 hours once without finding anything interesting. then i'll die fighting a monster and the whole trek was for nothing since i start back at my home base. what do i have to do to progress?

Another question for you guys, is there anyway to unify characters across machines? Found a lot of awesome stuff on my laptop, and I'd like to bring it over / focus on my better character.

Is this something that they plan on doing or is it something I have to do?

If the beacon is placed in a proper location, it will begin to spin. You then interact with it using E to activate it and stuff ensues.

You could manually copy over your save files from the "player" folder in your starbound directory. One full character is comprised of three files that have the same identifier code.

fuel is just coal.

Also, fuel = coal, you can either mine it, or make it by putting unrefined wood into your stone furnace (ten wood = 1 coal = 2 fuel). You only need one fuel to jump to another moon of the same planet, or to the planet itself.

Updates are great, but I hope they do add some things to the loot/reward side of things rather than just risk.

Otherwise it's like someone pointed out...you might spend 10 minutes trying to walk halfway across a planet. Each monster MIGHT give you 10 pixels, but if they touch you 1-2 times (or 2-3 times if you're lucky), you're dead and lose way more pixels than you collected by killing them. That's just a terrible tradeoff.

Making it even more difficult to explore and not lose pixels seems like it only makes it less fun to me, unless they also add some ways to defend yourself, survive, get more pixels, get better items, etc.

I would imagine the more dangerous planets would appear later in the game when you've got the basics of exploration and survival under your belt and you're itching for a challenge.

Some of the devs apparently dropped in on someone streaming Starbound and answered a bunch of questions, according to Reddit.
FractalPrism has a big list of things they talked about adding in the future, whether it's sooner or much later.

Just to throw this out there, in Alpha mobs can drop 10 or 25 pixels. As you go to new sectors, the drops increase(although 10 is always a possibility. On tier 10, they drop around 200 quite often. There are also tons of pixel containers underground(once you're deep enough, caverns are basically covered with them) so that's a good option for pixels in the early game before refining becomes available.

Does uranium have any use besides fuel? And is it better to keep it as ore or craft it into rods?

Only for fuel right now and it's best to keep it as ore at the moment. Rods give the same fuel even though they cost two ore, so it's a waste of resources. Sure that'll change in time.

Ugh i've been refining later fuels this whole time. what a pain lol

I hope I didn't kill this game for myself... but I probably did. Right now I'm sitting on a character with 500 energy\health\armor and a 1950 dmg sword that also shoots out 5 bubbles. And a rocket launcher. And I have pulse jump and bubble boost. So I don't see much room for any more progression....

Problem is, I know there is going to be a character wipe. And I'm probabaly not going to want to do allllllllllll that mining again. Not to mention the fact that, at this point, the only point to the game would be to build a cool looking house or something. And I'm not all that creative. And nobody is going to see it really because the multiplayer doesn't work for me.

So... I guess that's it. It's fun and I see a lot of potential with it. But I'm not sure what reason there is to play it anymore.

Take a break until it's done and so much will have probably changed it will feel like a new game. I mean, it's completely unfinished; only one tier of quests are in, the sectors are all sort of lumped together, progression is a mess.

I dunno. I don't see how anyone can say they're done with a game when it's still a pretty obviously incomplete beta. It'd be like watching a rough 2 minute cut of a 2 hour movie without any editing or post-production and saying "Alright, no need to see this one in the theaters."

The more I see of this game the more I want to buy it, it looks really good.

The only thing stopping me right now is the fact that it might be on sale on the Winter promotions.

also Dark Souls mod incase anyones a fan http://www.nexusmods.com/starbound/mods/19/?
includes Ornstein,Artorias,Smough,Fluted,and masks

It's a losing bet. The game is selling like mad at this price point and just started beta.

Ok, I'm going to buy it.

I'm coming after you if it goes on sale.

Anybody bought it on the Humble Bundle store? The key there isn't US only or something like that right?
