I'm the weird adventurous type who'll try everyone once in Smash games and either like them for what they bring to the roster as a player or as a franchise representative. It's why when I hear that line "doesn't deserve to be in" I go bonkers. I want as many franchises and characters represented as possible. I want varied and unique movesets.
Yea, there was 2 specials and 2 movies. Didn't count the specials.
And thinking of more Pokemon, there was Mew and Victini (but with Victini, it is essentially the same movie).
Speaking of that, Gen 6 doesn't have the equivalent of Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, and Victini. I guess there won't be a Gen 6 equivalent for the PokeBall.
Well both Pokemon received megalutions due to popularity most likely.
Falco and Fox are different. Different enough where they don't hold the same place in the tier listing in the games. Different enough where people have prefences and favorites. I guess we should take out Luigi, too huh?
And what about all the Items, and stages that don't have character reps? Those don't exist anymore, either?
Guess without that PictoChat Pen Character, we would never have the PictoChat stage!
Every character is considered on a case-by-case basis. There's no how-to-make-roster guideline sitting around the office. They add who they add based on sales, relevancy, popularity, seniority (previous titles), and to a lesser extent--personal preference. But even with those things considered, there's no hard rule. They add who they want to add when it comes up, even after established planning phases.

Wouldn't surprise me that the possible next tier of argument is "worthy" franchises. That's why you'd have shit like "Wii Fit Trainer is not worthy" because apparently Wii Fit isn't a "worthy" Nintendo franchise. You'd have shit like "these franchises aren't worthy enough to have character reps so they are only shown as stages".
But in terms of personal preference, if I had to choose between a character I like (such as Rosalina) or a character I don't know from an unrepresented franchise, I'd go with the character I already have an affinity for.

Don't forget gameplay possibilities. Everyone is excited for Rosalina because she is actually popular now, but she had a great moveset potential to begin with. This is Sakurai's 4th Smash game, at this point he's probably thinking more about game balance than he is about who the internet is going to be excited about more. Sure, seniority plays a big role in this (Marth being in, for example). But for newcomers, I don't think it means people are a shoe-in just because they are popular and relevant. Roy, for example, missed Brawl, and as much as a love him, don't see him coming back because he's not super relevant, he doesn't add anything that new to gameplay (he's pretty similar to Ike, but not identical), and he doesn't really have seniority.
Mewtwo is a similar case, although in Brawl he was replaced by Lucario, which, for all intents and purposes, started out as a Mewtwo clone. However, Mewtwo definitely is more popular and relevant than Roy has ever been, so I think he's got a good chance of returning.
Anyhow, I think gameplay possibilities are an important thing to consider when thinking about who will be in/out, especially in the cases of newcomers and those characters who were veterans that skipped Brawl. If, for example, we get Roy and Mewtwo back, maybe it's because Sakurai will change their moveset to be unlike Marth (and Ike) and Lucario, respectively.
Because of all this, I think Little Mac is a obvious newcomer because of his popularity, relevance and potential gameplay possibilities. I also think Palutena has a good chance based on gameplay possibilities and Sakurai's personal preference alone.
As such, adding arbitrary limits because "franchise X is over-represented/Y is under represented/Z does or doesn't sell" is anathema to what I want to see happen with it.
Hell I'm SmashGAF's biggest Mike Jones stan! That doesn't mean I'd tell Mewtwo or Daisy fuck off because we have too many Marios/Pokemon here (so long as their play style and character/attitude transitions well). :lol
Keep in mind that Falco (who seems to be rubbing the most people the wrong way), Young Link, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Roy and Ganondorf all made it into Melee for one reason, and one reason only - Sakurai's team had some more development time, so they added a couple more characters to the roster, but since the dev time was limited, they made clones.
And out of those clones, only Falco, Ganondorf and Young Link (now Toon Link) survived. That's only half of them.
Granted, Roy and Doc were at least planned for Brawl in some shape or form, but they still didn't make the cut in the end so they're a non-factor.
Also honestly, I still don't understand why people reduce characters onto one specific set of moves either - Wolf, Lucas and Luigi all have movesets that are completely unique. Wolf and Lucas share some similarities with Fox and Ness respectively, and Luigi has been a clone since Smash 64, but nobody thinks Luigi or Ganondorf should be cut. Heck even Toon Link gets less hate, and he's the cloniest of all clones. Why? Because they're more popular? Why do their fans "deserve" getting to play with their favorite characters, more than those of Falco, Lucas, Wolf etc.?
And that's not even considering completely unique characters that people want getting the axe. Lucario, Ike, Ice Climbers, ROB, Snake, Jigglypuff and Game & Watch seem to be the most popular "targets" for this. And I just don't understand it.
This is one of the main reasons I don't like coming to this thread often. It's always so negative. Constantly those talks about who should be removed from the roster and why, and how certain characters are more similar than others in terms of their movesets (even though in some cases that's only true for a fraction of moves), and whenever a new character gets revealed, people are spitting acid about how it's a waste of a slot and how their favorite character would be so much more deserving.
Mewtwo is a similar case, although in Brawl he was replaced by Lucario, which, for all intents and purposes, started out as a Mewtwo clone. However, Mewtwo definitely is more popular and relevant than Roy has ever been, so I think he's got a good chance of returning.
See this? This is absolute bogus. Lucario shares 1 (ONE) move with Mewtwo, which is the chargyball. And they're both a bit floaty and have similar effects with shooting little pewpewballs with their throws. But that's it. Also, never ever did anybody state that Lucario REPLACED Mewtwo. Mewtwo was supposed to be in the game until the very last minute, and he's still got several dummy files in the game. It's more likely that Sonic is the one who replaced Mewtwo, since it's obvious that Lucario has been there since the beginning, given his heavy involvement with SSE.
I don't know, in some instances I wonder why are people not happy with main pillars of the franchises? Why do we NEED Falco and Wolf? Do they do anything beyond offering different flavors? Can that fanbase not be content with a dog fight cameo with dialogue on a stage or better yet a final smash bringing these characters in? Their foundations for fighting are very much the same despite not being full on clones and are far worse than having several swordsman with different sword styles. Its also not like the Mario cast where the have completely different traits altogether.
Consider that a new franchise usually brings new music and new stages even references most of the time, I don't see why people obsess over already establish franchises. You don't get anything but the character. Why not go for the new dish on the menu? Why settle for a different flavor of the same shit?
I'm just using Starfox as an example but wouldn't it have been more exciting to make Saki or Isaac a full on playable character rather than put in Falco and Wolf? Wouldn't it be more interesting for the general gamer as well to have more variety in the media? I'd surely take one new franchise over 2 characters from an already established one, regardless of if I like the new franchise. Hell, ROB was an okay add for Gyromite.
Maybe it was because I didn't care but did Mewtwo really cause that much backlash from being cut? It was nothing compared to MvC3 not having Mega Man. Its all about who you choose to make room for new characters and experiences. I see nothing wrong with trimming the fat of established franchises for new franchises.
This is not about needing, its about wanting, I am completely fine with wolf and falco, you know why, cause im a damn starfox fan? this game is catering to me, and pretty 100% of nintendo fans by doing what its doing, falco or wolf being in the game, had no barring if saki or isaac was plyable, they didnt stop that from happening, infact sakurai made the conscious decision to make saki a AT, for the most likely reason being that he couldnt think of a full moveset at the time.

Yeah, that skipped my mind. For sure. It could be a super obscure character, but if the character has some crazy gameplay potential, then it plays into the decision too.
It's why I want to see playable Excitebiker, even though it's pretty unlikely.
A shame too, since I main him. I understand why people are so against clones, but if they were added late in development because they could squeeze in a few more characters, I don't see the harm.

You're twisting what I'm saying. Falco and Wolf are both space animal fighters that use similar weapons. Its the FOUNDATION I'm looking at. Take the characters and pretend they are from a different game entirely. Would they be different conceptually, no.
Falcon and Ness DID bring music, victory music and they were both great tunes. Did I say they always bring stages or that stages need a rep? No, I said that characters of new franchises usually more often than not bring new music and stages with them. Falco and Wolf did not bring a thing.
People are also getting distracted on why I brought up Mewtwo. I brought up Mewtwo because he was cut, I never said I thought he deserved it. But I did bring up if the consequences of a cut Mewtwo were as bad a people make them out to be? Did it cause major backlash? Is the consequence of a cut character that big of a deal if you are adding new content in its place? Brawl sold more than Melee despite being considered inferior from fanatics. Popularity is not THAT significant of a factor.
Its like once a person gets their character in one game, it doesn't stop there. Now the character must always stay in. That can't be fun for the developers. I've seen no other major series get much backlash for character axes in fighting games beyond clearly stupid ones like with the original Street Fighter 3. Cuts are not a big deal, people will just play the old games.
I agree.

Well, I said I think he started as a Mewtwo clone...and then changed his moves around.
And I was always under the impression that Mewtwo was replaced by Lucario. Both are powerful, humanoid Pokemon that can do energy attacks. I still think Mewtwo is coming back regardless, though.

Well, Smash needs more women, so...I'm down. Moveset would be badass, for sure. There' need to be a Metroid-style reveal at one point where she takes off her helmet and reveals she's a girl, though.
Interestingly enough, I wanted Toad to be the defacto grappler with my justification being how he was always the best power lifter as per SMB2. Just imagining tiny ass Toad hitting people with various holds and piledrivers should be enough to get anyone to crack a smile, especially if he could lift while moving as fast as he did in SMB2 while carrying items or enemies holding someone.

Would that make Mewtwo a Samus clone, then? After all, she was the first who got that charge shot neutral special, and she also is a bit floaty.
I mean, the fact alone that Lucario has this pretty in-depth mechanic about him shows that he wasn't conceived merely as a clone. I also heavily doubt that they would make a character and then go through his moves one-by-one to change them.
Aside from that, Lucario's body type, movement and attacks are all 100% different, except for the neutral special.
It's all based on speculation, but Sakurai mentioned that working with GameFreak was difficult. I imagine that there was something they wanted to be changed that Sakurai's team couldn't in time. Or, perhaps, they actually DID replace him with Sonic - perhaps he was the least along in development, and it was decided that he should be scrapped cause they couldn't finish both on time (despite the delayed releases).

You know, considering a lot of people thought the Rosalina trailer was about Kirby being in Mario Kart, I think Sakurai should add a kart minigame to this smash bros, If it's well received maybe even make it a full Smash Bros spin-off.
