Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

You understand that the entire purpose of Smash Bros. is to celebrate Nintendo as a whole, right? Not Nintendo's best selling and most popular characters particularly--everything about it. Smash celebrates its mascot characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, et cetera. Smash celebrates its star franchises: Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, et cetera. Smash celebrates its minor franchises: F-Zero, Mother, Fire Emblem, et cetera. Smash celebrates its past and retro works: Ice Climbers, Kid Icarus. Smash celebrates its hardware: Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. Smash even celebrates the stars of other companies its had relations with: Sonic, Mega Man.

The whole thing is just a giant celebration. It's not a matter of relevance to our times or sales. This is why you should expect a character like Mii, which has been a huge face for Nintendo as a whole. This is why you should expect yet another retro character to be brought back with a new and intriguing take. Don't count out the small guys, my man. Especially don't try to predict Sakurai.

Nice post

What is stopping him from announcing characters that haven't been on 3ds or Wii U? (Megaman doesn't really count since he is third party rep)

What reason does he have to reveal anyone this early without any promotional synergy?

Also, we didn't know the entire roster for Brawl until some guy leaked it. Even after the game came out Sakurai didn't want to reveal the roster. Judging by that and these recent newcomer trailers, the guy obviously values having the player be surprised.

Man I am more prepared to be disappointed.Smash is only Nintendo game that I care about right now , I wanted to see characters from their dead franchises. Megaman isn't only dead character out there.

I'll post it again.

Sakurai said:
“I am planning on doing my best to bring old characters back in Smash Bros. From that perspective, I am probably in the most fortunate position in the world.”

Hahaha, you must be new to the Study of Sakurai scene.

You know 2 retros appeared in Melee and 2 more appeared in Brawl? Patterns are stupid but there is a precedent showing that your absolute statements are laughable.

Takamaru, Mach Rider, Sakupon, and Sherif are just as reasonable as the other Retros and more than one is absolutely possible.

If they are all possible then why can't he show one instead of showing like five mario reps so soon?

I get how you feel and I also want to see more 'forgotten' characters but it's really up to what Sakurai wants to do. We can say x is more deserving than y but it all comes down to what Nintendo and ultimately Sakurai who decides what is worth their time.

Anbec7 already claimed the Green Luma. I wanted it too. =(

v_v brb lol

Cyborg Ninja? Enough with the Mortal Kombat talk already.

I personally think, as of now, both Little Mac and Chrom are definite ins. Both of their stages are in the game, for fuck's sake. I also have a feeling the unlockable obscure character will either be Takamaru, or something completely off the wall (like a walking Famicom, Sheriff, Miyamoto, Reggie, a walking Nintendo card, etc.)

Why does no one in this thread actually refer to any of Sakurai's interview to determine how he views characters and what he wants to do? It fucking baffles the mind.

Sakurai has been known to change his mind from past statements he made. He once said that he would only focus on Nintendo characters when deciding the roster; then came Brawl, then came Snake. He once said that the Animal Crossing villager--specifically this character--was not eligible for casting because he had no fighting capacity; here comes our next Smash, here comes Villager. Hell, he even once said Brawl would be his last contribution to the series, and we all know how that turned out. It's all up in the air, really, which actually makes the anticipation all the better. That's why we have the forum to argue and banter with each other--this shit is fun!

Regarding some of his more noteworthy statements from recent interviews:

  • He definitely has a criteria and an unfaltering objective in deciding his roster.
  • He also pays a fair amount of attention to what the fans want (character polls being his primary resource).
  • He has stated repeatedly that any character not originating from video games has absolutely zero chance of being included.

Take from that what you will, fellas.

Nah, Playstation All Stars. Long story short, Raiden was stupidly good in that game.

Let me cause some Vanilla Street fighter 4 trauma

Yeah Dillon is awesome as well as his universe in general.

Also Link is a Samus clone. B move is a charged projectile. Side B is an extended projectile. Down B involves bombs. Up B involves spinning!

Anyway I am laughing at the fact that people view Smash outside the character level and more as a franchise level, forgetting how characters matter and how they resonate with the fans rather than how "franchises" react. That talk feels more like an investor's talk than anything else.

You're twisting what I'm saying. Falco and Wolf are both space animal fighters that use similar weapons. Its the FOUNDATION I'm looking at. Take the characters and pretend they are from a different game entirely. Would they be different conceptually, no.

Falcon and Ness DID bring music, victory music and they were both great tunes. Did I say they always bring stages or that stages need a rep? No, I said that characters of new franchises usually more often than not bring new music and stages with them. Falco and Wolf did not bring a thing.

People are also getting distracted on why I brought up Mewtwo. I brought up Mewtwo because he was cut, I never said I thought he deserved it. But I did bring up if the consequences of a cut Mewtwo were as bad a people make them out to be? Did it cause major backlash? Is the consequence of a cut character that big of a deal if you are adding new content in its place? Brawl sold more than Melee despite being considered inferior from fanatics. Popularity is not THAT significant of a factor.

Its like once a person gets their character in one game, it doesn't stop there. Now the character must always stay in. That can't be fun for the developers. I've seen no other major series get much backlash for character axes in fighting games beyond clearly stupid ones like with the original Street Fighter 3. Cuts are not a big deal, people will just play the old games.

Yeah because clearly older games will have new mechanics found in the new mechanics right? Right?

Also Star Fox didn't brought in new music right? Except for that a bunch of songs like say... Area 6, Area 6 Remix, Star Wolf theme, nearly many SNES Star Fox music, and some taken from Assault. They didn't bring music at all!

But nope, Victory Themes have more factor than the music from the games which are newly composed!

It impresses me greatly how there is people who think there is the minimum chance of the n64 rooster not being in the game O.o

How fox, kirby and DK are not 100% ???

DaBoss said on the IRC that it's a possibility that people just forgot certain characters. I mean, Zelda's not 100% either and she's pretty much a shoe-in. That or they just really don't like those characters.

I guess I am holding smash up to high expectations and getting a little impatient in the process. Its hype though but its negative hype.

I just want to be able to get hyped that Sakurai is showing the "forgotten characters" and Nintendo has no game to show for it.(Reveals shouldn't be so convenient for Nintendo to show characters being in other games that they are worrying about.) Nintendo showed Rosalina being in Mario Kart as a highlight for them. I want Sakurai to be bold enough to say you can play this game for the character on the "Gamecube/GBA etc." Would be like Sakurai sticking it to the man"Nintendo" for me.

I don't hate Rosalina but I don't like where roster seems to be headed towards. Some of these Star characters from Nintendo use to be hidden like Luigi and Toon Link.

So... is Professor Layton a third party character? I know level-5 is a third party, but I thought the Prof. Himself was a Nintendo property, hence why he's not in the iOS game.

The "Retro's New IP Protagonist" guesses should be replaced with Cranky Kong.

Edit: Layton is published by Level 5 in Japan. Nintendo just helps out with publishing in the West, he's not owned by Nintendo or anything.

ain't nobody scared of Snake in Brawl

by nobody I mean viable characters of course
The only reason Snake is outclassed by those characters is that he doesn't have bullshit. He has absurd damage, weight, and range, but no real bullshit on the level of Olimar and Ice Climbers and Diddy.

Metaknight doesn't need bullshit. He's so broken, he eclipses bullshit.

(But he still loses to SSB64 Pikachu)

Mike Jones - 10.93%

Wait wait wait, let me get this straight:

- There are people who thought characters like Fox, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Pit and Kirby weren't locks

- Mike Jones (StarTropics) has a higher visibility/demand than Daisy, Toad, Captain Syrup, Lyn & most of the Awakening hopefuls, all the protags of the Sin & Punishment series, Samurai Goroh, Black Shadow, Medusa from Kid Icarus (!!!), Andy & Sami from Advance Wars, and any extra character from the Mother and Animal Crossing franchises

:')

- Krystal has a higher visibility than all of the previously mentioned as well as bigger ones like Lucina and Roy (!!!), Paper Mario and Hades?

GAF is the craziest place on the net I swear. :lol

We doing fighting game trauma now?

Post reminds me, with Megaman in Smash, what are the chances of a Zero assist trophy that lightning loops someone mid match?
