Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Rosalina is a really unexpected addition, for me anyway.

I wasn't that nuts about the galaxy games, but it looks like they're giving her a great, unique moveset, plus it's another female rep so I'm all for it.

The only newcomer that I NEED in is a Wonderful 101 rep. People said this would be implausible, but just have the different B combos swap out Wonder Red for Blue, Green, and Pink, which will use their unite attacks for the A attacks. Bam. I don't know why people think they can't possibly make a good rep this way. It would be such a huge missed opportunity to exclude Nintendo's best new IP in a decade a rep. Also, we know Sakurai visited Platinum, and I would much rather have Blunder Red in than Bayonetta.

Other additions I would love but am not holding my breath for are Chibi Robo, Tingle, Takamaru, and Isaac. I haven't even played Golden Sun but I just think it would be a good handheld rep with an interesting, magic/sword based moveset, and I think he would mesh well with the artstyle of Smash. Shulk or Reyn would look really weird with everyone else (Snake does already, to be fair.) Mii would be cool too, but I don't really care either way. All depends on if they can come up with a good moveset.

Although Mother 3 is in my top 5 games of all time, I would understand if they cut Lucas. Ness is a great and completely original rep, whereas Lucas, though fun to play as, is just a less competitive clone version. I would rather have Duster, Boney, Masked Man, Kumatora, etc. assuming that they would have a unique moveset.

Overall, I think that they've done a great job up to now. The only omission from Brawl that I really felt was egregious was Animal Crossing, and they've got that covered. As long as they include a Wonderful 101 rep, every other unannounced newcomer is gravy. Whenever they've added a WTF rep in the past, they've complemented it with a great and fun moveset (Mr G&W, Pokemon trainer, ROB, etc.) so I trust Sakurai to do the right thing.

The problem with a W101 rep isn't the moveset, it's the technical implementation. Having just one character misses the point of the game, controlling several at once is tricky and runs into problems with the memory budget, and constantly swapping them out runs into load times and doesn't play well as evidenced by similar characters.

I don't doubt that Sakurai would like to find a way to do it, but they're a really weird case for a fighting game.

But Olimar is in with only 8 Pikmin. Pokemon trainer swaps out.

And the unite morph is the other units. There are several missions in the game where you play with a lone character anyway. I just think that the problems people are imagining are, well, imaginary.

Possibly only 3 Pikmin this time, he's never, ever been shown with more.

EDIT: The Wonderful 101 is preeeeetty far down the totem pole of un-rep Nintendo franchises. I'd say Chibi Robo is more likely.

Pikmin are tiny little low poly things, and it helps that Olimar is pretty small himself. Pokemon Trainer's swap mechanic is hard to use effectively and required triple the work, and he's already got it anyway, so we're not likely to see another slot using the same idea.

Guys, why is Rosalina's name "Rosalina" in the U.S. and in some other territories while "Rosetta" in others?

Wouldn't "Rosetta" fit better? Or would that have google-searched too many Rosetta Stone language guides?

Zelda swaps too.

My point was that Olimar with just 6 Pikmin is just as (poorly) representative of the gameplay and "point" of the game, which is micromanaging 100 Pikmin, as swapping out Wonderful Ones with pre-formed unite morphs, if not less so.

Just as something to chew on, here's the full list of characters that haven't been confirmed for Smash U/3DS but were playable in a previous entry:

Captain Falcon
Jigglypuff
Ness
Yoshi
Dr. Mario
Pichu
Mewtwo
Roy
Falco
Mr. Game and Watch
Ganondorf
Zelda
Young Link
Wario
Snake
Lucas
R.O.B.
Lucario
Pokemon Trainer
Metaknight
King Dedede
Wolf
Diddy Kong
Ike

Total: 24

Characters from all three previous entries: 4
Characters from two previous entries: 4
Characters from one previous entry: 16
Characters who are sole representatives of their franchise: 6

Obviously the bulk of the 16 who only made it into one Entry are most at risk, but those who were in Melee and then dropped for Brawl are more at risk among that group than those introduced in Brawl. Thus far, obviously, no character that only appeared in Melee has made it back in.

I think it has to do with copyrights. (I personally think the name change is irrelevant because both refer to flowers in some way.)

He's not too far off the mark. Scaled down, yes, but he's still throwing them all over the place, the different colors are still very meaningful, having a full swarm is important, and they level up over time so letting them die carelessly is a waste.

But the mechanics by way this is achieved is nothing like Pikmin.

Little Mac would be a great addition because not only is he a retro character, but he's also a recent relevant character (Punch-Out Wii). On top of that he would be representing a new franchise, and he was also an assist trophy in Brawl, making him familiar to older players, younger players and also smash players. I just can't see him not being in.

Think we'll get our 3rd week of Assist Trophy Friday?

Who knows, games change English names to other English names all the time. Sometimes it's because it's too simple (see Tina to Terra in FFVI, many Pokemon have literal English words as names in Japan like Crab, Thunders, and Ghost, especially in Gen 1, but sounds cool when pronounced in Japanese), or because, well, they just want to I guess.

But did you know Luma is named "Chico" in Japan? Now that change I get.

Well, his boxing ring is a stage so he can't possibly NOT be in the game right?

When is Sakurai gonna reveal him anyway O_o

To be fair those games weren't fit for playable reps until Sakurai decided he wanted Villager.
Tom Nook was hugely popular as an AC candidate before Brawl came out.

Then the stage picture came out with him in the background and the forum went into panic mode.

For all we know, he might not think Punch-Out!! is fit for a playable rep either. That's one of the explanations he gave for including Assist Trophies in Brawl, and he excluded Urban Champion from Melee because all he does is punch.

...All I'm saying is that stages don't necessarily mean anything.

The difference being that Sakurai specifically addressed his thoughts on Animal Crossing before Brawl came out.

I am still waiting for Sakurai to explain why Little Mac won't work.

You forgot Ice Climbers, but they've only been relevant because of Smash anyway.

I was actually wondering this myself. We do seem to be getting into the groove of confirming/reconfirming additions to old franchises, instead of confirming that franchises of old installments would be back. ( Never mind new additions from new franchises.) I mean, we got the entirety of the mainline Mario series and a 2nd Link before Marth

Here's how I see the series reveals, assuming Smash is the holiday 2014 game:

Yoshi: Yoshi's New Island/Yarn Yoshi release date
F-Zero: Could be at any time, what with the adamant stance on the series that has been taken by Ninty. I think though that it'll be during the background of the E3 2014 trailer or at launch.
Earthbound: Maybe around the 1-year VC anniversary? Either that, or perhaps as a double whammy with Lucas near April 20th?
Ice Climbers: Random week.
Game And Watch: Post-launch.
R.O.B: Random Week. Perhaps to coincide with NES Remix DLC?
Wario: On the launch date of one of the spinoff titles. (Next being Mario Golf: World Tour)
Metal Gear: If included, it would be during a major Nintendo direct.

Diddy's probably on DKCRTF's launch, Zelda's at ALBW's Japanese launch/HW Launch (Or Gannondorf), Jigglypuff's post-launch, Falco and Wolf would either be during random weeks or post launch, Lucario/Pokémon Trainer during the week of 2014's game announcement (Gen 3 Remakes/Z/X2Y2), MetaKnight/DDD on K:TD's Japanese launch, Lucas during a random week and Ike near SMTXFE.

It's somewhat of a crapshoot, but they usually coincide near game releases so they can post promotional links on the site ("Want to know more about ______? Visit the _______ page!")

I actually do think Little Mac will get in.

But I am betting he won't be announced at E3. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The forum meltdown over a bait and switch like that would be quite legendary.

Sakurai didn't cover everyone in Animal Crossing, nor does he owe anyone a reason for not putting Little Mac in the game

Why should he have to explain himself? There are thousands of Nintendo characters who aren't playable in Smash Bros. Little Mac isn't special in deserving an explanation. If he doesn't make the cut, it's probably because he's virtually unknown in Japan and because all he does is punch -- and I say that as having Little Mac at the top of my wish list. I wouldn't blame Sakurai for not finding Little Mac exciting.

This just drove it home for me that Rosalina is the first newcomer since the initial reveal. Wow.
Yep. And we're still not at the number of newcomers that were announced alongside Brawl. That game appeared at E3 with five newcomers: Meta Knight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Wario and Snake.

Once a fifth newcomer is announced, I think I will very truly go into my patented That Would Be Tits Hype Mode.

Either Sakurai is taking more time with the reveals so that he doesn't blow his load before the game even comes out like last time, or there really aren't that many newcomers this time around.
