Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

You can't make guns. At that point in the game you're probably going to have to find an Avian airship to buy one. As you progress you'll start finding guns in chests as well. The boss doesn't really require a gun, though, an iron bow should perform fine.

you can but the mod to do so is broken
also wth isnt there an augment or status effect yet ingame that protect from lava
cant make a proper Varia suit without immunity to lava

I don't include mods when saying what you can and cannot do in the game in general. I can also blow up 100x100(or larger) radius areas, but that doesn't mean it's standard haha.

Edit: 100x100 radius ... Leaving it anyway.

So wait, I left my game open with my character in my ship for about an hour and a half. When I came back I had significantly less pixels (assuming I'd died) and I was taking like 6 dmg every half second. What gives?

Starvation. Sleeping in a bed halts your hunger from dropping, so if you intend to afk, I'd recommend doing that.

You're just describing an ellipse that happens to also be spherical. Or something.

I joined gaf server, if someone wants to play. name: Final.
can't play online in any other way since I need the open a port or something to make it work.

So I'm trying to do port forwarding so that my brother and I can play together, but it's not letting me open his port 21025 because it's conflicting with my open port. How do you play with someone when you're using the same router?

Run the server on only one system (yours, for example). Port forward to the server (your computer). Then run the client on both systems and connect to your IP.

*sigh*[snip]

Pretty much word for word my position about the subject, better put than I could.

Skyrails mod is going to be official in the next update:

That's awesome! I really love how the devs, being indie, can and will add anything that makes sense and enriches the game.

I know this is a little late to comment on this, but this is why I am weary of modding my games. You install something like this, have a blast, and then the whole game is "cheapened" because no legitimate item in game is nearly as fun.

But that said, that does look really cool.

I alo feel like this, which is why I tend not to install any mods altering gameplay; it's not much different to using GameShark or Action Replay before finishing the game. On FTL I only ever installed cosmetic mods.

I only used mods that are mainly asthetic or fix something late game.

Example...I installed Estus Flasks..they are just a tad bit better bandages..but as I progress even more they are just as effective as older bandages (as in not really).

Dark Souls/Demon Souls armour. It just replaces current gear sets. So its just the same stats different look.

Is there any way to know the max players we have gotten so far simultaneously ?

On the GAF server? Originally, I was touting "OMG WE GOTZ 30 PLAYAZ!!!!" But I probably was reading the stupid server window wrong. During that test, I was only looking at the number in parentheses that's next to the player name when they log in. After a day or two, finally figured out that the number does not denote how many people are on the server at that time.

To err on the side of caution, I'm going to put the max number we ever got on the server at 20 players.

Did you try that netstat command? Should be able to see the number of IPs connecting to your starbound port.

Not during the intiial load test.

Using it lately, all I see is 7 or 8 people on at any given time. So not really a good indicator of how many people max we can have playing at the same time.

Also, I havent seen any lag issues in the last two days or so, but the last two updates seemed to have introduced some major lag when the number of players exceeds 10. Which I know is wrong, because I know we went way past that during the initial load test, and the lag wasnt there. (Near the end of the test, started to see lag, that's where I was gettin the "30" number initially, but that probably is wrong anyway).

The new "20 players max" number I'm extrapolating is based on 2 things: 1) The max number of Terraria players I can get on this computer is about 18, and 2) The netcode is definitely better than Terraria's, considering the fact Starbound has to handle multiple players AND planets. Although based on those two things, I'm not setting the max number that much higher than Terraria's max number.

Okaaaay... so... here's what I'd like to do about the GAF server.

First off, why I'd like a dedicated one: Well, to be honest, as long as the server is running (and its pretty much running 24/7), I can't really do anything that intensive other than run the server, and play Starbound. Which kind of sucks, because I'm a gamer, and I'd like to actually play other games.

Now, in terms of getting that dedicated server, I could pay for the server by myself, but I'd be looking at running a measly 6 or 8 person server a month. If this was Terraria, sure, maybe, but Starbound isn't just one planet like Terraria, there's thousands of planets, and while in Terraria, its fairly easy for a group of players to strip the planet dry, or hell, troll the hell out of the world, in Starbound, we can always just easily say screw it, and easily move to another planet, without resorting to any actual wipe. This game needs to be played with a lot of people shaping the universe, and I feel that only 8 people is too pathetic a number to have for this game.

---
Considering how I could have at least 18 people in Terraria on my PC, I'd like to shoot for, bare minimum, a 20 player server. We COULD go higher, but I'd like to start at 20 for several reasons:

1) It's still a beta. It's because of that, that we're probably not going to get that huge influx of people on a constant basis. Once we're out of beta, I'm sure the amount of players will increase, and maybe at that point, we can increase max capacity.

2) Keeping it at 20 means that the expenses won't be as high. There's a good $150 difference between 20 and 30 people for a one year server.

---
Which brings us to the money aspect. I can't afford to pay for a server that large. For this to work, I would appreciate it if we could all chip in. At most, we need about $350 (I'm rounding up, and havent taken into account the discounts) for a 20-man server for one year. During that time, if we need to increase capacity, I could always ask for donations again so we can bring up that number.

We probably only really need $300 though. I'm willing to put in $50 to start us off. If we really want that 30-man server, we'll need about $520 ($470, if you subtract the $50 I'm going to put in).

Could we go higher than 30? I suppose we could. It could be a waste of money though. We gather enough money for a 50-man server, but after the intial hype dies down, we'd only be doing a 20-30 man capacity, and that's just wasteful. We could have used that extra money to buy ourselves games or something.

I havent worked out how to actually collect donations, or if there's a reward system we can implement for people who donate, but I'll take suggestions.

---
Now, as for when we could move to a dedicated server? Honestly, I'm debating if I should wait or not. Again, I'd actually LIKE to use my computer for other things, but we could also start as soon as we gather enough funding, or we can wait till we hit Phase 2 or 3 of the Beta, or even for the game to come out of Beta.

---
Well, those are my thoughts on the whole dedicated server idea. Any and all input is apprectiated.

Is there a list of what lvl planets to find ore? I need to find cerolium (after ferozium) and I am on a tier 6 planet.

Iron = Threat 1/2
Titanium = Threat 3/4
Aegisalt = Threat 5/6
Cerulium = Threat 7/8
Rubium = Threat 9/10

The ores you will find are what are needed for that tier's armor. Iron is in 1 and 2 because those tiers are Iron and Steel.

Seems like so many mods are game breakers.
I'm gonna be starbound virgin. Ain't no mods touching this install.

not really some mods yes but not all of them
most of the mods i use just add something else to the game like better fuel alternatives(im in fucking space im not using coal to fly) or something to make digging less tedious
and some im using for fun like Kill La Kill Ryoko Matoi outfit, scissoreblade(OP but its endgame tier), hatstation,and some Jo Jo stuff and some LOZ
and the INCREDIBLY USEFUL Smelter+ that im sure hanryu is using to turn useless crap drops back into the ore used to forge them
some mods for Nintendo stuff cause wth not
Universal Energy for more endgame tier mechanics
bacon bandages
estus flasks
extended songbook
and invisible armor+character improvements
edit: look guys gambling http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/smileys-gambling-chest-mod.502/

Stuff about getting a dedicated server

I think you'll have to wait until the game is out of beta before you'll have a chance to crowdfund the server.

Obviously right now with only 7-8 people on at a time it seems like either there are 5-8 dedicated players, or nobody is really that dedicated.

At $350/8 players it would probably be too steep for most people.

Even if non dedicated players chipped in, it could be something like $350/20 players, which still isn't cheap enough that just the average wage earner will pay approx. the price of the game to have a nice server to play on.

I totally feel you on it sucking hosting a server on your own PC. I like to re-encode my movies to different formats, which is a slow process in and of itself. When I was hosting a small minecraft server for my friends this became pretty much a non-option.

Personally I wouldn't fault you if you wanted to close the server and just upload the map/world files so all the players can still have copies of their work/creations/etc.

At the moment trying to figure out what UE adds in player cfg so I can add it to my own. (I have multiple mods).

Hopefully I have the correct UE mod..it talks about making energy bars. Have to get stuff from server nodes in the human bases etc...correct one?

The smelter mod can completely replace the ingame smelters right? I can make ore into bars?

correct seeing as you need the furnace to make the smelter lol
yep that sounds like Universal Energy mod alright
edit: just now i found a pulse jump tech literally in the middle of nowhere in a tech chest

Well crap one of those has increased the LOADING screen..but the game hasn't crashed. Its been 5 minutes (typ its less than a minute)...lol

I haven't tried any mods yet, though when I play with someone who uses one of those ABC song files, it freezes my client for like 5 seconds before loading.

The gamma base is alllllmost complete. It's a glass sphere on the top of a tall glass pillar/ladder:

The bottom of the glass pillar leads to a water pit so you can dive all the way down into the tunnel. :D

Also two random scenic shots:

Aw man, I can't find a few ABC music files that I really want.

Inspired by SR4, I'm trying to find Aerosmith's I don't wanna miss a thing and Stan Bush's You got the touch.

To compliment you on your musical taste (and because, as a MASSIVE Transformers fan, having You Got The Touch would be awesome), I'm going to try to find/make both for you. Give me an hour. I'm assuming you want them playable solo?

If you can find it in midi than there is hope.

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing's MIDI was found nearly instantaneously, but I spent a good chunk of this hour fruitlessly looking for a MIDI of The Touch. I even hit several pages complaining about the lack of a MIDI for this song. Most of the rest of the time was spent downloading and trying WAV to MIDI conversion programs, with results pretty much as unrecognizable as you'd expect. :/

In its stead, I found a decent MIDI of the Transformers Movie (1986, obviously) intro. I also included two slightly different versions of I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (I removed one instrument on the second to improve note accuracy).

uh, that's quite amazing.

Already got all tech and upgrades, so I figured it would be a good idea to settle down and build a village for myself, but all my plans crumbled when I couldn't find a way to fill in my personal swiming pool with some sweet water D:

I was wondering if you guys know of any item in the game that works like the empty bucket in Teraria.

Perhaps simply making a ground on the hole eventually fills it if it rains? I'm not sure how that works in this game. Otherwise, I'm sure they'll implement buckets (and other containers for lava, etc.) eventually.
