Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

By default, Villager is my favorite — not necessarily because of the character itself (he’s essentially a nameless avatar), but because a playable Animal Crossing character is long overdue. Mega Man and Rosalina & Luma are tied for a close second.

Wii Fit Trainer is probably my least favorite of the newcomers, but even then, I really like her and think she’s a great addition. It speaks to the quality of the new characters that even my “least favorite” is a good pick.

I'm curious as to what the GAF consensus is.

Which newcomer is your favorite?

(Please don't cheat. This is just for fun!)

I was stuck between Mega Man and Rosalina & Luma for long time but I decided to go with Rosalina and Luma because she impressed me the most in term of move set. Also I would like to mention that I was surprised by Rosalina's inclusion, and I'm impressed with her move set. Bravo, Sakurai.

SSB64 - Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, etc.
Melee - Bowser, Peach, Zelda; less important than the above
Brawl - Wario, Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong; less important than the above

Wario is more important than the universe.

*fart*

Mega Man all the way. One of my most desired newcomers and his moveset looks like a loving homage to the NES games that mixes it up with robot master abilities. I can't tell you how many times I've watched his reveal trailer.

The rest in order:

2. Villager
3. Wii Fit Trainer
4. Rosalina & Luma

I voted for Mega Mang for president.

I voted for Rosalina & Luma. My second choice would've been Wii Fit Trainer.

In the past, I didn't think Rosalina was anything special. I didn't give her any consideration as a potential Smash Bros. newcomer. I warmed up to her a bit in 3D World, but still didn't find her to be anything special. I liked her more for the fact that others liked her.

But Sakurai being Sakurai, he found a way to make this character truly appealing to me for the first time. Something as simple as the subtle star pattern he added to her dress provided just the right amount of detail to make her design feel "complete."

And of course, the real star of the show (pun intended) is the addition of Luma, something even the most vocal advocates of Rosalina probably didn't anticipate. Rosalina's manipulation of gravity and use of Sling Stars is interesting in its own right, and the mini-galaxies and star-swathes accenting her moves are pretty nifty. But adding the "puppeteer" element with Luma just takes the character to a whole new level.

Of the four newcomers so far, I am most intrigued by R&L's fighting style -- by the potential to double-team enemies sandwiched in the middle; to check multiple threats at once; to zone enemies from afar; to rush down foes in the face of a fully-charged projectile; to edge-guard without fear; to defend your backside; and to break free of grappling moves.

And Luma's levity goes so well with the serene grace of Rosalina. Together, they're an amazing combo.

All of this being said, what Sakurai has accomplished with Wii Fit Trainer is truly remarkable. Her fighting style might be nothing groundbreaking, but the translation of the subject matter is truly inspired.

And Villager looks way more appealing than expected. Everyone figured Villager would make extensive use of tools, but I didn't see anyone guess the ability to grab and "pocket" projectiles. Or how about planting a seed, watering it, growing a tree, hacking it with an axe, and knocking out foes with the falling timber -- all in one fell swoop? Villager certainly has his share of brilliance.

Mega Man

He is the biggest "star" of the bunch, and his moveset looks closer to my playstyle than the rest. Sakurai took a fan favorite that I didn't have any real desire for and made me want to play as him. The iconic NES design, the Swiss army knife type moveset, all look splendid. Seeing Mario, Sonic and Mega Man in the same game is rad. Mega Man really adds some rich video game history to an already legendary cast of characters.

I must say, while he would've been my last pick in this poll, Mega Man really is perfectly realized. I don't claim to have an intricate knowledge of his franchise, but his inclusion in Smash encouraged me to download MM2 off the 3DS eShop, and it's amazing how perfectly they translated him to Smash.

voting in that poll made me realize how, in my mind, smash 4 is 4/4 with newcomers. i think all of them are brilliant additions and i'm really hyped to try all of them out.

hopefully this trend continues with the rest of the reveals, but so far it really seems like sakurai and the smash team are on their a-game.

I guess everyone know who is the winning subtitle at the moment.

Anyway, Way to go! Smash4GAF! We already surpassed GAF's Super Smash Bros Brawl hypes. (Total of post counts)

I'm more than positive we will be seeing a few more newcommers in time. But as of now, i voted Mega Man.

One of my favorite franchises ever, is Mega Man. And lately Capcom has been neglecting him way too hard. Thank you, Based-Sakurai.

I agree -- all four newcomers are incredibly solid. They look good, play well, and represent their franchises in ways that feel clever and complete.

I also like how each newcomer gets their own reveal trailer and poster. This goes a long way toward making each newcomer feel like an event.

I voted megaman cause I a was impressed at how faifthful of a 3D transition this is, and each of his moves being a non-punching (except for the Marvel Vs Capcom move) taken from Robot Masters its just a really neat idea and great detail.

  1. Wii Fit Trainer: She's the perfect trolling character, will make do with her until Waluigi is revealed in Smash 5 6.
  2. Villager: All the different tools and items he utilizes in his moveset is pretty cool. His announcement in Smash was one of the main reasons I started playing New Leaf.
  3. Mega Man: He's no Nintendo character but he's pretty cool.
  4. Rosalina: She's the one I'm least interested in.

I wouldn't expect it to happen, but one Mario character I think would be a rather neat newcomer from a gameplay standpoint is Birdo:

Her main ability would be to fire egg projectiles. They'd move moderately fast and hit hard. But the cool thing is that you could land on them and ride them with a well-timed jump. Perhaps her Smash Attack could spit out fireballs instead (as per SMB2).
Birdo's is one of the main reasons a Captain Rainbow character would be cool beside's that he is super fabulous.

For his A button attacks he can use his yoyo. For his B attacks he can call these guys:

B neutral: Birdo's egg missile.
B side: Takamaru's... whatever Takamaru does.
B up: (Fat) Little Mac's upper cut, with his belly acting as a balloon/parachute.
B down: Advance Wars unit spawn, randomly spawn an infantry or a tank or whatelse.

You technically can replace Little Mac with someone else if he makes the cut.

Also we need a Mario fighting game so that the likes of Waluigi Birdo can shine.

I'm torn between Mega Man and Rosalina. Both are supremely well realized and full of little details that just make me :) immediately seeing them in action. Mega Man might edge out ahead though as his reveal came during a time when everyone was ragging on him and fans of the series were pretty much down and out.

His reveal trailer was also hype as shit. Putting the fear of God into Link with Metal Blades? Awesome.

And wouldn't that be "Super Smash Bros. For New Page"?

Let's not jump the gun this time Heath. I wanna kill this thread with my bare hands.
