Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

#teamboth versions though I will admit that the wiiU gives sakurai like 50 GBs of space to work with and nintendo even allows dual layer versions atleast eventually that goes up to 100 GBs, so I do kinda think he is limited to 8 GB on the wiiU version which is what he was limited to with brawl.

It's the superior version and that's a fact.
How is that a fact? Because the resolution is better? Because it has more polygons? They are the same damn game with different stages and different graphics, we won't know which is better until we play them.

Wii U discs are only 25GB per layer and we don't even know if they can do multilayered discs.

I'll get both versions, four WiiU Pro Controllers and possibly a new TV day-1. Goodbye, wallet ;-;

I'm definitely getting both too, and we're gonna need like 3 WiiU Pro controllers for me and my brothers... it's certainly gonna be an expensive, but amazing day.

To be fair, controls are also a plus for the Wii U version. It offers more options.

Because the Wii U graphics are special, haha. No offence, but the Wii U can push out more, whereas it looks as if they're actually pushing out more on 3DS, hardware wise.

Either way, same game, different stages. The core game is essentially the same.

None of which have the analogue stick across from the buttons, unless you buy a third party adapter to plug a Gamecube controller into your Wii remote and that is assuming that Wii Classic Controllers will work with the game(they probably will).

thats right, got that confused, iwata commented on that they will eventually do multiplayered discs if needed

Well, the Wii U version looks better and probably will play better as it will offer more controller options. I just can't see the 3DS one being the best.

And yeah, I'm getting both. :3

Well, the Wii U version looks better
Technically, sure, but if you ask me the 3DS version looks a lot better from an aesthetics standpoint. The colors pop and it is just more pleasing to my eyes.

and probably will play better as it will offer more controller options.
Probably, but you don't know that for sure, it might be more comfortable to play for longer hours, but we can't say that it will actually play better.

My 3DS has taken hundreds of hours from MonHun and Street Fighter and will probably survive Smash. At the end of the day, if you don't mash the fuck out of your buttons, it will survive. Look afer your systems, people.

I personally prefer Smash on 3DS as I prefer handheld gaming and being able to play whereever I want. I can tether my 3DS to my 4G and play online whereever I feel too, that sells me and prevents me from getting a Wii U for now.

Don't bring up the argument of graphics cause there are a lot of people who would disagree with you saying the 3DS version looks better artistically, that is as subjective as it can get

Did you quote the wrong person? Because I just said I like how the 3DS version looks more...

What the heck, people still have problem with 3ds?

Is Sakurai seriously at work this week?

I think we might get a break next week.

New thread for new stage?

Yep. New thread for new stages, characters and major updates.

So... have you guys seen that Pacman in SSB4 picture going around?
Looks fake, but I like the idea. It would be cool to see Pacman in the mix.

Yeah, it's fake.

Took him a bit, but here's the quote:

"Pic of the day. Happy Holidays! Here's a new 3DS stage--Rainbow Road! It can't be explained in one picture, but it's going to be a cruise-type stage."

I'm excited. Hopefully that it would be like Mario Sunshine's stage in Brawl.

Yay! I hope that means we'll get a second shot soon.

3DS is pretty capable then, with moving stages, Rosalina+Luma's complex moveset, I'm happy they're barely gimping it.

What are cruise stage like? I don't remember them.

Same here. It look fantastic on 3DS, and I don't have to worrying about 3DS for now until Sakurai said so. Cruise could be like Rainbow Cruise (Melee) or Mario SunShine Island (Brawl) It's a Great Christmas Eve GIFT, so I can't wait for Christmas Day gift. :)

Well, it certainly looks great but I still find it hard to believe that there are people that prefer this style over the Wii U one.

Right now 3DS stages are catching up with Wii U stages' numbers.

We have 11 revealed stages for Wii U and 10 revealed stages for 3DS. It's nifty to see more 3DS stages.

I prefer how the 3DS version looks, do you think I'm lying to look cool on the internet?

Haha, of course not. It's probably because most of the time I prefer good graphics over a good artstyle. Anyway, I guess we should move on. We have different opinions on a subjective matter. When I will be able to play both versions I think I'll make a detailed post about which is certainly my superior version.

We've seen 11 of each, I made a list a page ago.

And yep, people still have an issue with there being a 3DS game.

I prefer the 3DS graphics. The outlines are awesome and characters looks better, check Toon Link who looks like a lump of clay on Wii U, but looks more natural on the 3DS, and how Samus has nice shiny armour on 3DS but not Wii U, though the Wii U obviously has more detailed items etc.

The colours pop more on 3DS due to the outlines and it has a more "fun" vibe to it, the Wii U game looks great too, but some of these models aren't too good, such as Toon Link.

It's a shame. People should buy both. We need to support Sakurai and his cause!

I was wondering what is 3DS's 11th stage, and I just saw your list. I forget all about underground stage. I wonder if it's playable stage or adventure mode stage.

lighting improves everything

Lighting in the Wii U version makes the game look objectively better.

Lighting is pretty, yup. The 3DS stages have some nice lighting too, like Battlefield at sunset.

I believe it may be an adventure mode stage, though I got my information from IGN.

Why would Sakurai downgrade it for? It was the 3DS that started Smash 4 due to his preference of a handheld system.

"Cancel the 3DS game" is bullshit. It will 99% sell more than the Wii U game, and if it wasn't for 3DS, Smash Wii U wouldn't even be a thing.

Do you have a source for these statements? Like did Sakurai say this in an interview (and I'm going to need you to provide me with the link to said article)? Otherwise it sounds like some delusional nonsense or a game of Telephone gone awry.

Well, it started as brainstorm and they decided that Smash on console could no longer evolve so they felt like a handheld would, so it started on 3DS and then Iwata asked for a Wii U game when they felt the screen was a little too small for Smash.

Sakurai has always stated that he wanted a handheld Smash too.

Interesting. Thanks for the source. Yeah I can definitely see how hearing something akin to "cancel 3DS version" repeatedly can become irksome and annoying. On the flip side, even Sakurai himself acknowledges the limitations of the 3DS and I don't think its unfair or unusual for one to be super hyped about the Wii U version and be lukewarm to disinterested in the 3DS version. I don't think "if there was no 3DS version there would be no Wii U version" is the correct way to interpret the series of events explained here but it certainly does elevate the importance of the 3DS version far above that of a "pet project" that I feel some people were/are treating it as.

Speaking more on the subject on the interview, it feels a bit worrying to hear they thought "the series couldn't evolve further" on consoles; it feels like an admission that they are out of ideas. On the other hand, any new ideas they come up with working on the 3DS version could certainly find their way back to consoles and the feedback loop of ideas between the two systems should be beneficial for both in the long term excluding any concerns of resource stress/drain.

I think concerns on both sides of the aisle are mostly unfounded (Version X is holding version Y herp-a-derp) but there is at least a bit of logic behind them. Anyway, speaking generally and to nobody in particular, we are getting two Smash games this generation instead. Until I see concrete reasons to be concerned I'll just be glad I'm getting more of a good thing and I think others should follow suit.

Ugh

The most irritating smash thing of all in this whole 3DS vs WiiU thing. Of all the crazy things why on earth did Sakurai believe it would ever be a great idea or a stroke of genius to consider not having a home console version at all in favor of only the 3DS?

When Smash is one of if not the go to title when talking about local multiplayer yet moving it to a handheld exclusively even comes up as a thought?

Absolutely ridiculous, worse than the inclusion of tripping by an absolute longshot.

If he keeps having moments of 'genius' like that i definitely hope someone else takes the head when developing future titles.

EDIT: Off topic but i personally feel that his love of handhelds ultimately held Kid Icarus Uprising back as a game. Love or hate them the controls of Kid Icarus were an issue that could quite easily have been remedied had it remained on the Wii or been moved to the next logical console the WiiU rather than the 3DS.

Thank you for a well educated, humane response. :)

Kinda like there is no way for the f-zero brand to evolve. What horribly broken and dumb logic.

Edit: I'll be buying both versions day 1 and will probably be buying a wii U and 3DS to do so but i'd be pissed if they didn't make one for the home consoles. Probably would have made me just stick with brawl.

The day smash becomes handheld only is the day I stop spending money on it.

There are minute exceptions to my home console fighting game rule, that is dissidia and jump ultimate stars.

everything else, console please.

Am I blind? I think artistically and style wise the two versions look pretty much the same... You can definitely tell that they are two versions of the same game.

The only difference is that they downgraded the polygons on the 3DS version, and added the black character borders, but they use the same models/animations.
