Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I like that smash bros is its own series now that they can add OG characters like the enemies and bosses in brawl
Well they should be there with Nintendo characters. SSE's enemies were just Mario enemies and the original enemies. That was such a missed opportunity to have various enemies from various series.

Galleon was fine (not battling twice fine), but Tabuu and Duo whatever (that thing is the worst) are pretty bad. Porky was a pain in the ass out of all of the Nintendo bosses.
If gaf had to guess, what characters are getting cut? and total roster count?
None.
Regarding original Smash stuff, I would love to see fighting polygon team back rather than those weird ass things that replaced them in Brawl. Also bring back Metal Mario because the music from those two stages were the best.
They were both pretty much the same, and Metal Mario was such a cop out and that stage is way too small and the boundaries being so far away. One of my least favorite stages in the series, and I normally don't mind those neutral stages.
Oh and a buddy of mine made a neat observation. Look at the poses.
Old, but still cool nonetheless.
Captain Falcon, he's useless and not very popular among smash fans. I think there might be around 41 total characters in all.
oh my

Worth it alone for the music! I was missing the Smash 64 music when playing Brawl.

To chime in on the debate. Im fine with Master Hand and the wire frame characters those are fine. However minibosses and standard enemies would be nice if they pulled from other series. There is more than enough enemies to pull from Mario, Zelda, DK, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Mother, Starfox, etc.

I can see three characters from Brawl getting cut: Snake, Ike and Lucario.

Snake because he was a third-party guest character in Brawl. With the new MGS game not coming out on Wii U I'm not so sure if Nintendo wants to promote it. But then again I could be wrong, they did have Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots and Portable Ops stuff in it, and Sakurai and Kojima are supposedly BFF's (although Sakurai seems to be BFF with a lot of Japanese devs).

Ike because Fire Emblem is one of them franchises that gets a new protagonists with every new game, so he might be too irrelevant these days compared to Chrom or whatever. Although it feels like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is still a bit relevant because it was the first FE game released on a home console worldwide, so Ike might still be in because he's "the face of the new Fire Emblem" or something. Also, if it wasn't obvious already, I have never played a Fire Emblem game, so I probably don't even know what I'm going on about.

Lucario because there are over 700 Pokémon to choose from and one might wonder why the hell we're stuck with a Gen IV Pokémon when there are so many new we could play as instead. Pokémon is a tricky situation because we keep getting new characters all the time, but cuts sucks, and Lucario is still a really popular Pokémon (I don't really know why though, he's ugly). He might stay because he's popular and kiiiiiiind of relevant in X&Y, but if Sakurai/Game Freak wants to show off the newer Pokémon, he might go.

Female trainer with Gen. II starters would be super sick.

It'll probably be an alt costume like the Wii Fit Trainer.

I just went through all the old veteran reveals and found something interesting. Nearly every single one of them has shown at least 1 special move in their first pictures; this is true of Marth, Sonic, Toon Link, Peach, and Olimar. The only exception is Luigi, and we have seen his fireball since. Most of them have shown many different parts of their moveset.

But with Zelda we got nothing. Not a single familiar special move can be identified in those pictures. All we got is that trollish Phantom tease.

Whether the Phantom is part of the moveset or not, I'm becoming convinced that Zelda has been reworked.

I thought he'd get cut for sure until B2W2 and XY

In the former he was often advertised (such as in the anime commercial) as a "returning veteran" Pokemon since BW had the whole new start thing going on.

His Mega Evolution was advertised greatly for XY, there was an illustration done by GameFreak of Mega Mewtwo and Mega Lucario battling it out, plus you're given Lucario in XY during the campaign.

Waiting for the plot twist where your Mii is the final boss because it represents you the player.

It's already happening.
Rather than have the bosses be playable in the sense of fighting, Sakurai should make them be in a rhythm mini game instead.

"There's your playable Ridley"

Thats dumb.

And unimaginative, it makes me feel like nothing is happening. Oh they are just toys, who needs this explanation.

You know the explanation for marvel vs capcom? there is none, Wolverine is throwing hands on Ryu, because its fun. They don't need to be toys, why ruin the theme of a celebration of franchises by making the stipulation of their meeting so stupid.
One of the things I hate most is when someone tries to interject some type of logic into a situation that really doesn't need any to try and explain some of the awesomeness that is happening. No one needs to be toys, there does need to have some existential hand things.

Just let me nintendo fight with nintendo characters and nintendo bosses.

Replace the hands with classic nintendo bosses or something.

Its just really dumb, and it always brings down my hype when I see them. A terrible idea that has gone on for way too long.

I can't fault you all for enjoying it. I like things people do not like too, I just never liked them , EVER.

Taboo is still poo though.

Say what?

( hated the inclusion, like the power it gave me)

The comic they was pretty cool. However Marvel 1 and 2 had the characters exist in the same world, which I preferred. And even Marvel 3 forgets the fate of both worlds thing in a number of endings. A long with that the explanation they provided isn't what I am talking about. That kind of explanation doesn't really ruin anything and provides a convenient plot device. Where is smash is " you aren't playing as the characters, but magical toy versions" which took at the hype out of it. Because now I'm not playing a link I am playing as fake link and fake mario and fake samus. And that uninspired and thematically lame.

Also something comics book companies, like marvel had fixed decades ago.

" Its a different dimension"

Done , less lame.

Blam.

The reason that I don't hate the Hand Bros is because they fit with Nintendo Tropes imo.

Here's some examples.

I feel as though Master and Crazy Hand represents the Hand Enemies as a whole.

There are very few hand bosses I like actually.

But I suppose that is reasonable, but I find hands with out a person really lame.

Maybe if the hands were on a giant specter and you had to fight his face and body in Smash 4 i might change my tune, But for right now, kinda lame.

I've loved the hands ever since the intro of SSB64 where you see the hand taking the dolls out of the chest and bringing them to life, and you immediately get the concept that this is a kid in his room making all his crazy crossover dreams come true. In such a context, of course his hands are going to be the final boss. Hell, I did that shit as a kid with my toys and Sakurai knows it. That's why they are the best and will always be. It's simple, brilliant, and drips with Sakurai charm.

That's why I want Master Face :P

I don't think they'll cut Lucario. It's still one of the most marketed and popular characters in the series. Given the role of any given Pokemon in the series especially older ones, Lucario's was pretty significant in X/Y.

There's a difference between cuts and replacements. From Melee: Mewtwo, Roy and Young Link were replaced. Mewtwo with Lucario, Roy with Ike and Young Link with Toon Link. Pichu & Dr. Mario were cut. 2 characters were cut, not 5. That's how I see it. It's not like we were going to have Toon Link AND Young Link.

My predictions are if anything we will only get two cuts. Snake, and maybe Wolf. I could see them bringing Star Fox down to two characters. I hope they keep Snake though.

As for replacements, Lucario could be replaced by Mewtwo, Ike by a different Fire Emblem character (could be female), and Wolf could also instead be replaced by a Star Fox character that would play even more differently to Fox.

Those are my safe predictions. As for bold ones... With Pikachu sticking around, and Pokemon Trainer probably sticking around due to the gen 1 starters being a big deal in x and y, Jigglypuff could be one too many gen 1 representative with so many pokemon to choose from. Infact, nostalgia aside, Lucario is more relevant in x and y and amongst pokemon players right now even after two generations. However, Jigglypuff is a Smash staple so it would be interesting to see what they do.

Following up on this, I think I've finally solved the mystery of the Phantom.

People have been using that second screenshot to argue that the Phantom can't be part of the moveset, but they've got it wrong. There's a reason the camera is tilted at that specific angle. It's her Side-B. She summons the Phantom which travels on a horizontal plane until it encounters an enemy, as seen in the first screenshot. The reason you don't see it in the second screenshot is because it has already traveled beyond Peach and Link; the camera is specifically tilted to hide this fact.

I'm now confident enough about this to avatar bet anyone who dares.
