Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Slots per franchise as a function of total roster size almost certainly exists, unless you think Sakurai would realistically include 10 Mario characters in a roster of 50. It defies logic and the precedent set by every other game in the series.

If Sakurai thinks that 10 Mario characters are good choices for the game, then we'll get 10 Mario characters.
We had 5 Mario characters in a roster of 26 before (which is about a fifth of the roster, just as much as 10 for 50 would be), we had 2 on a roster of 12 (a sixth), and that's not counting the greater Mario-verse (i.e. Yoshi, DK, Wario) as Mario characters.

fine, add "within obvious reason" to the first part of my statement

I just think it's unwise to get your hopes up for more than 1 more Zelda newcomer (not counting transformations). I wouldn't be unhappy if I were wrong.

I'm struggling to even think of a viable Zelda newcomer besides maybe Toon Zelda who isn't a one-off character. You have Tingle, but Villager jacked his balloon gimmick which doesn't bode well for him.

I think perhaps Sakurai's comments were a bit misleading. He made similar comments leading up to Brawl and see where we are. The only reason why Melee and 64 didn't add as many characters is due to short dev time which is why we also ended up with a couple clones in Melee. Brawl also had some cuts. This is kinda what I'd like to see:

Confirmed:
Rosalina
Wii Fit Trainer
Villager
Megaman

Speculation:
Mii
Pacman
Little Mac
Takamaru
Impa
Palutena
Dixie Kong
Ridley
FE rep(Lucina, Chrom, or Anna)
Tom Nook
Female Pokemon Trainer

Cut:
Snake
Sheik

Returning:
Mewtwo

I wouldn't mind seeing characters like Jigglypuff, Ike, Lucas, and Wolf cut but idk on those possibilities. I could see Ike and Wolf cuts upsetting Smash fans as they do have their uses in the game. I also could see Lucas cuts really upsetting Mother fans.

I hope that they wouldn't cut those characters that you mention, including Snake and Sheik as well. I'm still hoping that we would reach to 49/50 characters slots with countless of transformation characters.

Hmmm thread 4? Whelp subscribed and leaving again XD

So we all believe Snake will be cut, any slim hopes he won't be cut then?

I'm still clinging on the hope for Snake's return. HE MUST RETURN!

I have a strong gut feeling that Cranky Kong will be the Donkey Kong rep over Dixie Kong or K Rool.

Heck, I don't mind to see him being playable character. He may be our Uncle Scrooge for Smash. He got that cane hop.

I'm honestly starting to doubt there being secret characters at all.

I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. I have a feeling that we might not get unlockable characters but at same time, I know Sakurai would love us to work harder to unlock those characters. I would like to be confident enough but I'm not. We still have a long way to go with starter characters. Honestly, I thought that Rosalina and Wii Fit Trainer would be perfect unlockable characters because I would be genuinely surprised with those characters.

I can understand not getting your hopes up, but I think realistically we're getting Little Mac, Mii, Pacman and 3-5 others (10-12 newcomers).

Sound right.

Hm, maybe. Sakurai did have the odd reasoning with people sharing cutscenes online, so who knows, he could've made everyone available from the start because everyone would find out online anyway.

I hope not though. I want some surprises.

Same here. I want my surprises too.

Is anybody planning on going digital with this game? Are you worried considering the Christmas state of Nintendo's online services? I'm rethinking everything now. Don't know if I can trust them to get me the game digitally on day 1.

I don't think I will go with digital because I always preferred physical copies.

Not that it really matters for me, going physical for the inevitable boxart.

Same here. I hope that our boxart would be great this time.

I'm not sure how hidden characters are going to be handled, but what I am sure of is that Luigi, Toon Link, and Marth are starters. Sakurai isn't going to reveal hidden characters a year away from release unless they're third-parties. That would defeat the point of them being hidden in the first place.

I hope that almost all of returning characters would became starter characters and leaving most of newcomers and few returning characters as unlockable characters.

Did I dream that or did they confirm a female atl for Villager?

It was definitely dream, but it's still possible tho.

I'm going physical with Wii U. Where's Bayo?

No Bayo at the moment. :P

There are a bunch of people theorizing that Sheik has been eliminated and replaced with Impa. I still think Sheik will be the Down-B, again like I said, to save the roster slot. That shouldn't be a controversial statement given that it was the exact rationale that Sakurai gave for the Pokemon Trainer.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't give a flying fuck about the Zelda franchise. The last game I played from that series was OoT (and a tiny bit of MM) and I didn't enjoy it that much.

I was actually getting a metric boatload of schadenfreude from Skull Kid being an Assist Trophy.

That said: Sheik is not getting cut. In the worst case scenario, another character will inherit her moveset, but the moveset is going to stay because porting it to Smash 4 would not take as many resources as crafting a moveset from scratch, and because the moveset is incredibly unique among the entire Brawl roster (and the Smash 4 roster we've seen so far as well).

I agree with Fiktion that Toon Zelda is more likely than a lot of you guys think. The Zelda series has gotten a ton of new entries since Brawl and is definitely deserving of an additional character. Regardless of your position on "clones," Toon Zelda/Tetra is easily the most significant Zelda character who has yet to be playable. Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, and Wind Waker HD have all released since the Brawl planning period, and Toon Zelda/Tetra is included in all three. Plus, she was planned for Brawl. At the very least, that tells us Sakurai considers her a worthy Smash Bros. character.

I can picture the reveal trailer: evoking the spirit of Super Mario Sunshine, Toon Link, Mario, and Kirby are lounging on a beach when a pirate ship pulls into view; the camera snaps in on Tetra who watches the three from afar with a telescope. "Tetra sails into battle!" Cue her gameplay trailer. Halfway into the trailer, there's another CG scene: Tetra approaches Toon Link, Mario, and Kirby on the beach, and everyone is confused. Tetra transforms into Toon Zelda, Toon Link is frozen in shock, Mario and Kirby stare at Toon Link, and then Kirby offers a cocktail to Toon Link. Cue a short bit of Toon Zelda gameplay. At the end of the trailer, Toon Link and Toon Zelda walk away together towards the sunset.

I believe Sheik will make it back as a way to save an extra slot. No franchise has ever had more than 5 reps before, and with Toon Link in there's only one more slot available which is going to go to Toon Zelda.

Sakurai usually references the roster by the actual number of character, not just "slots" on the selection screen. I don't think the slot being visible or not counts much.

He still classified Zero Suit Samus as a Metroid newcomer, in spite of her being under Samus in the character selection screen.

Edit:
Here's a quote where Sakurai mentions that Brawl had 18 Newcomers:
http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/7/459...discusses-the-pain-of-modern-game-development

"The Brawl team really put in a great effort," he recalled. "They remade all the original characters and added 18 completely new ones!

I agree with that part.
I just don't think that clinging onto numerical values is a good idea, and it makes me a bit upset that the whole slots thing is so absolute to most of the people in this thread, while it always is just a general idea/estimation, rather than an absolute numerical value.

This is the sole point I was arguing against.

I fear that we're going to get Toon Sheik like the Brawl data suggested instead of Tetra. I really really want Tetra but I'm preparing for disappointment.

Being the troll that he is, Sakurai will reveal Toon Zelda before saying anything about any version of Sheik. That way we'll be able to argue about it for months until he finally reveals regular Sheik. Then we still get to argue about Tetra.

found them, turns out they're on the main site.

Pretty cool.

A Jigglypuff cut would really upset me, so much so that I would boycott the game and possibly even Nintendo as a brand.

I might actually do that if Jiggs is cut.

I seriously don't understand why people want Jigglypuff cut.
Is it that the balloon pokémon is always the first character most people unlock? Or, is the nerf Jiggs got in Brawl?
I don't get it.

It was from the old Dojo, I believe. I'm having trouble finding the archives for those.
Link is at the bottom of the current official webpage.

Why is Zelda wearing Uggs
Why WOULDN'T she?

Sonic already has the Sega base converted, lowering Bayonetta's already-mediocre chances (disclaimer, I'm a Bayonetta fan). If they want a Platinum character THAT badly, they'd likely go with Wonder Red (who I'm pretty sure isn't getting in
:-(
).

There might be something funny going on with Bayonetta. She was in The Wonderful 101 but as far as I know there was no credit given to Sega or any acknowledgment that Sega owns the IP anywhere in the fine print. It might be that Nintendo owns her rights now.

Honestly, I think they're just going to have the secret characters be more focused on the newcomers instead of having, say, Luigi as a secret character for the fourth game in a row. Everybody knows Luigi is going to be in the game, it'd be more meaningful to have characters that people aren't sure about (Mewtwo, for example) as secret reveals.

The Nintendo Casino's slot machines are all being used. Play roulette instead.

A Jigglypuff cut would really upset me, so much so that I would boycott the game and possibly even Nintendo as a brand.

I wouldn't go that far to boycott if one of my favorite character got cut. I lost three characters from Melee to Brawl, and I'm still playing Brawl.

That Toon Zelda Cutscene would be very cute trailer so now I want to see that happening. :(

Yeah, Toon Zelda is more likely but I still slapped myself for removing Toon Zelda and Toon Sheik (Tetra) out of my prediction roster. I took them out at last minute with the assumption that they would focus on better newcomers. At same time, it was my wish list.

Vaati, Phantom Ganondorfs, Dark Link, Beedle (lol), Skull Kid :(, Twinrova, etc.

lol
You guys are already losing it.
As for the roster.. Expect 40 characters.
45 MAX counting alts (Sheik, male WFT, etc)

I would really like a Toon Zelda / Tetra.

I also hope no characters will get cut. It also pains my chest when people ask for Wolf to get cut because he's a clone. I shake my blaster at you!

Yeah, otherwise you lose your bet. :p

Snake being gone would be a blow to me just because I thought he was one of the highlight characters of Brawl given all the trickery he can do with explosives.

I like Wario's explosives better.

With the update break and all, I figured it's a good time to revise my roster predictions. Here's my predicted Smash Bros. roster for 2014!

I don't expect EVERY character on this roster to make the cut, but these are all of the characters that I can imagine making it in. I expect 45-50 characters total.

This is pretty much my ideal list. Yes, even Ridley is a character I've always wanted.
