Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I find this line of thinking to be pretty flimsy considering a significant proportion of Smash characters have moves not actually based on anything they've done in their own games or don't act as they would in their regular games.

I speak more of the items, objects, and characters that are incorporated into their movesets rather than their actual attacks. Link's items are all based on their realistic, Twilight Princess incarnations. The same goes for Toon Link and his weapons, right down to the swirly smoke released by his bombs. Other cases such as King Dedede's minions, Yoshi's eggs, Snake's realistic-looking arsenal, F.L.U.D.D., and the weapons/projectiles used by Samus, Ness, Ice Climbers, ect. all fit their users very well. Realistic Zelda controlling a Cartoon Phantom does not, in my opinion.

Personally, I don't want Pokémon Trainer to change. I'm also not sure which Gen VI Pokémon would be a good fit for Smash. If anything, they could make Lucario/Mewtwo mega evolve somehow.

I liked the idea of the Chespin, Braixen, and Greninja combo for a new Pokemon trainer. Of course, I also think playing as Sylveon would be fun, even if it's not very likely.

This doesn't make any sense. They managed move sets for Captain Falcon, whose game is about driving cars, Star Fox, whose game is about flying around in space, ROB whose... You get the picture.

Why are people acting like it's some ridiculous, technically infeasible pipe dream to put a character from a 3D brawler into a 2D one? I really don't understand Smashgaf.
I'm not saying it's completely impossible, but I can't imagine it actually happening. The Wonderful 101 isn't much of a franchise, with just one game, and it's not exactly that important to Nintendo's history either, so I don't see the inclusion of a character from the franchise likely at all, on top of the issues with faithful character representation. The latter isn't as big of a deal, of course, and can be worked around, but that on top of the former makes the possibility really unlikely to me.

Wonderfull Red and Nook are pure Assist Trophy Material, and I still have doubts about W101 being a Nintendo IP

It's Wonder Red, and W101 belongs to Nintendo. Just like every IP from Platinum belongs to someone else. This unanimous doubt that Nintendo doesn't own the IP is saddening.

Also, Sakurai was caught visiting Plantium a while back. Could have been multiple things, keep in mind he does have to negotiate with companies for certain things. He has to with Game Freak for Pokemon for example.

I do agree that Nook doesn't have a shot in this ballpark.

Hopefully Falco and Wolf will have new final smashes and Ganondorf a new moveset. I would also personally take Mario's fludd away and give Luigi the poltergust, but alas :(
I wouldn't mind seeing Wolf leave. We don't need three Star Fox characters that play so similarly. If they let him stay, then I agree he needs a new final smash (or new moveset entirely.) Also, Ganondorf needs a sword.

I think Mario should keep F.L.U.D.D., but I also think Luigi should get the Poltergust. They would both add unique twists to the characters and make them less "cloney". (I will never use that word again.)

Since they changed Bowser quite a bit since Brawl, I do have faith that we'll see some of these changes this time. I'm worried about Luigi's Poltergust though since we haven't seen a single picture of it. It probably didn't make the cut, sadly.

Giving both Mario and Luigi a gadget to make them less cloney is a tad ironic :p It's just that Luigis Mansion is now more relevant than Sunshine, and I really don't see why fludd is sticking around when Mario has had over 5 main series of games without him in it.

I wouldnt mind seeing Wolf go either. I added him in last minute because 44 sounded better than 43.

Well, at least the two gadgets would play differently. They wouldn't be similar at all.

Overall I do agree with your list. Little Mac/Palutena/Pac-Man seem to be the popular choices. Sylveon is weird though, can't see that happening.

I don't get why so many people seem to want a new Pokémon Trainer with new Pokémon and actually expect it to happen. That would pretty much mean creating three brand new characters, not just one. Why do we need two Pokémon Trainers with three different Pokémon each? That seems like a little too much to me. And if you think the original Pokémon Trainer should be cut in place for a new one...that makes even less sense! You can't exactly just give Pokémon Trainer's existing move set to another set of starters, because their body types are going to be different, and there's no other Flying-type starter other than Charizard. So that'd be getting rid of three completely unique move sets! And there's also the fact that no other set of starters is going to be more popular than the Generation I starters, especially with them being brought back in X and Y. Replacing them would just be silly.

Agreed. I just don't see it happening. Pokémon Trainer will stay as he is.

I dont mind Krystal but I wonder if there would really be 4 Starfox reps.... I honestly prefer Wolf more than Falco. But I doubt they would cut Falco since he seems to have a bigger following then Wolf because of his personality.

It is pretty well known that Sakurai is friends with Kamiya, and he visited PG to console him over Bayonetta 2's cancellation.

Terrible Crystal Ball Readings: Falco and Wolf will be combined into one character named Walfco.

I still want the original 39 + Mewtwo to return with another 10 to 14 newcomers. Considering how at this point after Brawl's reveal we only had 11 characters revealed yet got close to 40 reps, I still don't agree with the notion SSB4 is going to have a super constrained roster.

The problem with Pokemon in smash talks is that people like to rely on what they think are rules and limitations for how the series goes and is repped in Smash.

The very idea of a starter appearing as a PC in smash was unthinkable by many because no one thought Sakurai would make all 3 from the set playable for example. Many people thought that because GF doesn't play favorites with the starters so surely that can't happen. And then XY came out with Mega evols being pioneered by not just Mewtwo but Blaziken, the only non-1st gen starter to get one so far ... and Charizard cause it's the only one to get 2.

Nothing saying PT has to have a team of starters or that there can't be another PT like character that doesn't have starters. I could see as "Pokemon Champion/ Gym Leader/ Team Rocket Boss" coming in as a character.
Hell, I could see PT coming back with just Charizard and having the option (at the selection screen) of a X or Y Mega evolve Down B that keeps it evolved until it's knocked off the stage (I mean, that's the only true to form way to show Mega-evolves. You gotta have a trainer an it has to last until the faint)

But what do I expect? My faith in Sakurai has been mega-sized cut down with Brawl so I just expect all of the Brawl-Mons plus Mewtwo. And if there's a Pokemon new-comer I expect Sylveon as it's the face of not only the New Gen's "New Pokemon" but also the face of Fairy types and amie. If there's a mega-evol feature I expect that change to PT I suggested to be how it's done or for them to just forgo the whole thing and slap in Mega-Lucario as the default Lucario.

It can still be the same pokemon and different pokemon trainers, I wont say that it wont happen but there must have been a reason sakurai didnt reveal PT during X and Y launch, I would like if red was still PT but I think he should do green/blue aka the female pokemon trainer from red blue green yellow aswell.

Mario has the Super Mario World cape and the standard combo and throw from Mario 64... All those were one shot elements too. I don't see how FLUDD is very different. It's true that Sunshine isn't as well liked as those other games, but it's not like Mario in Smash has ever only represented the newest games.

Why do we need two Pokémon Trainers with three different Pokémon each? That seems like a little too much to me.

Most people didn't really expect something like the Pokemon's trainer actual execution exactly because it basically meant 3 different characters. The fact that it happened once already makes it seem like it'd be possible for it to happen again.

Realistic Zelda controlling a Cartoon Phantom does not, in my opinion.

That's actually one of the reasons I think it might be Zelda's. That phantom shown in that shot clearly has much more detailed textures than the original one from Spirit Tracks. Now, one could say that it's just due to Smash's style changes, but, looking at Toon Link in Smash Wii U, they don't seem to be nearly as big as they were in Brawl. So, why would the phantom be changed so heavily in comparison? I mean, look at the phantom's original artwork:

character-phantom.png

The Smash version has a more detailed and realistic textures - they even added some patterns where the original design had nothing in order to make it look "busier". The main characteristic that points to its origins are the small feet, but some designs in Twilight Princess had those too, so it's not even that out there.

But why Wolf and not Falco? He's the only one who differentiates from Fox a lot. Also him being played similarly to Fox is a deathwish (he's not fast and he's heavy for one thing).

Terrible Crystal Ball Readings: Falco and Wolf will be combined into one character named Walfco.

Sounds like a terrible shipping name. Thank goodness no one ships Wolf and Falco.
I support Fox/Wolf

did someone said sylveon?!

Eh, maybe you'll end up right but I don't feel it's a significantly bigger change to the design than the new Nintendog trophy. Maybe it's me misremembering, though.

Why not Monolith IPs such as Baten Kaitos or Soma Bringer?

Plus going off of release dates, it's safe to say next veteran character to be added is from Dreamland.

I'm pretty sure that it's safe to foresee that we are getting Metaknight or Dedede.

Exactly this! He has extreme amounts of potential, and would fit perfectly in a Smash Bros. game! Please Sakurai... please...

I would love to have Wonderful 101 as representative but I'm not sure if it would happens tho. If playable character didn't happened then please add Wonderful 101 stage where we can see those characters battling against boss in the background.

1.Mario
2.Luigi
3.Peach
4.Bowser
5.Roslina & Luma

6.Link
7.Zelda/Sheik
8.Ganondorf
9.Toon Link

10. Donkey Kong
11. Diddy Kong & Dixie Kong (tag team)

12. Yoshi

13. Wario

14. Kirby
15. Meta Knight
16. King Dedede

17. Pikachu
18. Jigglypuff
19. Lucario
20. Pokemon Trainer (Male/Female)
21. Sylveon

22. Fox
23. Falco
24. Wolf

25. Pit
26. Palutena

27. Marth
28. Chrom

29. Ice Climbers

30. Little Mac

31. R.O.B

32. Mr. Game & Watch

33. Villager (Male/Female)

34. Wii Fit Trainer (Female/Male)

35. Captain Falcon

36. Pikmin & Olimar

37. Samus/Zero Suit Samus

38. Ness
39. Lucas

40. Mii

41. Snake

42. Sonic

43. Mega Man

44. Pac Man

Pokemon was the hardest choice. People say Mewtwo is now more relevant... But so is Lucario. He also got a mega evolution, and plays a part in Pokemon X and Y. Having Mewtwo will give too much emphasis on Gen 1 and I didn't want to get rid of Jigglypuff. Sylveon represents gen 6, fairy types, and female gamers ;)

Hopefully Falco and Wolf will have new final smashes and Ganondorf a new moveset. I would also personally take Mario's fludd away and give Luigi the poltergust, but alas :(

This list will likely be inaccurate in the sense that it's too conservative, I think. I mean, if Wii Fit Trainer or Rosalina weren't already confirmed I don't get the sense that you would have considered including them in your prediction, so I don't think it's wise to hypothesize upon what the rest of the roster will be as though Sakurai has exhausted all the big surprises. I think there are at least four more big reveals that (almost) no one will see coming. Pokemon Trainer, Snake, Sonic and Captain Olimar (to a lesser extent) were just as unexpected as ROB when they were revealed for Brawl, and every newcomer so far has been completely unexpected outside of Mega Man.

To be clear: I think everyone on your list except Sylveon and maybe Chrom will be in. I just think that your list is playing it safe in regard to how left-field sakurai tends to be and is likely missing 4-5 of the more unexpected characters.

Edit- sorry for double post. I'm relying on my phone for posting presently :/

I don't know what they'll do with the roster and find it too difficult to predict because based on the three games we've had there hasn't been much consistency or clear direction in what Sakurai wants to do, beyond the obvious of exploring new additions to every roster. Melee took Smash 64's puny roster and more than doubled it with new additions, if a bunch of clones. Brawl culled a few from Melee's roster, worked harder at giving clones more unique fighting systems, and added a bunch of new characters as well.

And so, it's very difficult to predict who will return, who will be cut, if anyone will be cut, or how movesets will change.

Additions to each roster have ranged from the logical like Zelda, Peach, Bowser, and so on. To seemingly forgotten low key Nintendo characters like Ice-Climber, and oddballs like ROB, Mr Game & Watch, Dr. Mario, and so on. Now we have Wii Fit Trainer, a character Sakurai deliberately put in to fuck with fan expectations. And lets not forget how insane it was learning that Solid Fucking Snake was in Super Smash Bros.

So based on that, how do you predict a roster? It's easy to say shit like Rosalina is kinda believable because she's become a bit of a staple in recent Nintendo games with multiplayer focus, and hasn't been discarded since Galaxy ended. Megaman seems obvious now, but people expected him in Brawl first, a game that had only two third party characters while also using the semi-clone trio Fox/Falco/Wolf.

Ultimately I think Sakurai and co's intentions with the roster could literally be anything and thus all predictions and expectations are really just fan lists of what people would like to see, with way too much conjecture when arguing probability, especially for franchises with a tremendously diverse cast like Fire Emblem and Pokemon.

Smash 4 is one of those games where I literally do not know what they're going to do with the roster. I don't know which franchises will make a surprising appearance as part of the playable roster. I don't know who, if anyone, will be cut. I don't know what changes will be made, or why. I don't know how they're going to do Pokemon, or Fire Emblem. I don't know how they're going to treat clones of old. I just don't know, and nobody here does either.

And honestly, for me that's part of the fun. I didn't expect Dr. Mario and Mr Game & Watch. I didn't expect Wolf and ROB. And I didn't expect Wii Fit Trainer. Surprise and unpredictability are nice.

I was checking a couple things. I'm just glad everyone seems to be on the same page in regards to switching Lucario out for my boy Mewtwo
...................................................................

Do some people in this thread not get it?

I knew I forgot something in that slots pic.

Pretty much. Your statement was well-explained, and it's pretty spot on how I felt about the roster and speculations.

I think it is reasonable to be able predict some of the roster, but then Sakurai isn't entirely predictable as you said.

I personally thought Mega Man was likely since it was one of the most requested 3rd-party characters in that poll.

We do have extra data from Brawl, so we can expect something from that.

We can also look at the software releases for major franchises and see recurring characters (i.e. Rosalina, but this is more due to recent happenings).
Well because then we couldn't fight about it
Dat truth bomb.

It would almost certainly be Gaur Plains, the most famous location in the game, and one so early that it isn't a spoiler for anyone.

However, I'd pick
The Fallen Arm
as the most interesting location and most representative of the actual game. If not that, then
Eryth Sea.

As for which Xenoblade character should make it in, it'll almost certainly be Shulk, which would be, you know, fine. But both Riki and -warning MASSIVE spoiler -
Mecha-Fiora
would be far, far better, both in terms of distinctive visual design and especially in terms of adding new styles of play to Smash.
People would rage, but I would absolutely love it if
Fiora
got in as a second Xenoblade rep. That game deserves two characters!

We're talking about loincloth+staff Krystal, right?

That's the Krystal most people seem to think would be included, but I would say that it's just as likely that Krystal would end up not using the staff.
She utilized it in one single game only, Adventure, and there she only used it during the tutorial before it went to Fox who used it for the remainder of the game.

And then the staff was dropped in her subsequent appearances and she was just a regular member of the Star Fox crew piloting a spacecraft. Obviously the staff doesn't have much importance to the character - it's kinda like if people would request the blue candle to be an item used by Link.

I'd rather they not go backwards with Mario's moveset, fludd was borderline useless in Brawl but that doesn't mean it'll be useless in Smash 4. Speed up the charge time, increase the range, and increase the pushback and suddenly you have a really nice move for displacing characters unexpectedly from a distance. The potential is there for cool stuff is the move is buffed

I hope this entire game bombs.

/troll :p

wow
much troll
such lameness
:P

fixed

also man what is up with the Sylveon picks, it's like some people want to have wrong predictions on the record

way to totally disregard fucking donkey kong saving the wii u, some sort of sales analysts you two are

As long as nothing I'm looking forward to gets rushed or flat out cancelled, I'm okay with the Wii U still tanking if it at least forces Nintendo to seriously re-evaluate how they handle hardware development without taking the easy way out.

The diference is that people use this doubt to say the game will not be exclusive xD
And I just had this doubt because Platinum MUST own SOME games, right ?

And my talk about Assist trophy is more based on how Sin & Punishment was treated in brawl...

Off the point, Dr. Wright MUST RETURN AS Assist Trophy again. I love it when they announced Dr. Wright as Assist trophy because it was nice callback for SimCity.

I don't agree Wii Fit Trainer was put in to deliberately mess with fan expectations, I believe Sakurai was inspired to make her into a legitimate fighter. However I would say her early reveal was certainly designed to show that even though this is the forth game there are still plenty of options and not to rule out anyone. Villager also served this role as a character who had previously been stated to not be suitable as a fighter.
