Official NFL off-season/Draft thread: party like its 1980! (niners #1 pick time!)

If the Dolphins don't move down, they'll definitely take a running back and it definitely won't be Cedric. So it'll be one of the Auburn guys, with most scouts a little stronger on Brown due to his size and blocking ability. I wouldn't mind my Fins getting either guy, but my gut tells me Cadillac might have the better career.

uh no offense but jason campbell is a fucking joke and if he is taken any higher than the 6th round i will be shocked. dude had pretty much the best running team in the nation and he was still garbage. there is only 1 good QB in this draft, and his name is alex smif

And if the 49ers are smart, they'll take him. No offense, but Rattay sucks.

rat is a true champion. he proved it 2 years ago and he will prove it again this year (when he is completely healthy). remember friends, he was the #3 rated passer in the nfc over his first 6 starts of last year. this is with NO running game, NO offensive line and NO receiving threats. he is the real deal, you'll see.... you'll all see

goddamit, Griese!
I would love to see what woulda happened had the Pats gotten Rattay instead of Brady. Those were they two QBs they were looking at.
Would the Rat be a 2 time SB MVP? Would Brady be a bum?

Heh, doesn't Brady hold a grudge against the 9ers for picking Rattay over him? :lol

being that rattay is more physically gifted than brandy, then no rattay wouldn't be a 2 time superbowl champ... he would be a THREE time superbowl champ going for the pinky this sunday. brady is a fraud and a liar, and he will be exposed this sunday! but enough playoff talk, this thread is for the draft. some rumblings i hear:

* Nolan wants to bring bill walsh back as a consultant
* Antrel Rolle is a sleeper candidate for the 1st pick now, although we could trade down and still get him. plus, does a CB deserve #1 type money? time will tell

* Donald Driver says favre will retire
* Plaxico Burress says he is tired of playing second-fiddle on the steelers. He says he should be getting thrown the ball more than he is. He wants to leave the steelers
* Patrick Surtain has received permission from the Dolphins to seek a trade
* "The Washington Redskins are requiring season-ticket holders who buy their seats with a credit card to use a Redskins Extra Points MasterCard, a move the club says will ease ticket distribution, and increase fan loyalty, according to the Washington Post. "
* "The Titans appear to be on the verge of a major personnel overhaul this offseason, ready and willing to dump several key veterans — as many, perhaps, as seven starters from last season — because of their high salaries and the team’s tough salary-cap situation. According to various reports, the team will be about $23 million over the cap next season, and the Titans’ salary purge could mirror what the Ravens did in 2002, one season after winning the Super Bowl."

Favre technically has until March 1 — free agency begins March 2 — to make a decision but it would behoove the Packers to force his hand before that date in order to make contact with and build a bridge toward acquiring a replacement. Chargers QB Drew Brees would become an option and Thompson is said to appreciate 49ers QB Tim Rattay, a player who might become expendable. And don’t be surprised if another team with far greater cap flexibility blows away Hasselbeck with a contract offer he cannot refuse. San Francisco might not be that team, but former Seahawks college scouting director Scot McLoughan, hired Tuesday as VP of player personnel in San Francisco, could at least put the Niners in the picture.

fuck, i dont want that scumbag hasselbeck on our team :(

I can usually take what you say with a grain of salt because you make me laugh, but you are a idiotic asshat for saying that Campbell is a fucking joke. I have watched every down of his college career. You have watched maybe 2 or 3 games that he was in over the last 4 years? If you would've actually watched Auburn this year, you would know that there were several defenses that limited Carnell's and Ronnie's production this season, and Campbell had to single-handedly win many of the games.

He had an up-and-down career, but you have to remember that he had four different offensive coordinators in four years. There is not a single top QB in college or the NFL that had to deal with that kind of turnover. His development this season is the single biggest reason that Auburn went 13-0 for the first time in their history this season. Not Ronnie or Carnell, as great as they are. He proved this season what a true champion is. Calling Rattay a true champion is an absolute joke.

He has a great body, a great arm, and all of the physical tools to be a great NFL QB one day. If his decision-making continues to improve, he will be a starter one day. Here are his career stats in a predominantly run-first offense:

2001: 142 ATT 89 CMP 1117 YDS 4 TD 4 INT
2002: 149 ATT 94 CMP 1215 YDS 11 TD 5 INT
2003: 293 ATT 181 CMP 2267 YDS 10 TD 8 INT
2004: 219 ATT 150 CMP 2137 YDS 16 TD 5 INT

He has a career completion percentage of around 65%. You tell me what is not to like about him.

well you are right about one thing, you are more of an expert on auburn football. and you are also right about me only having seen about 5 auburn games tops, but in those games he didn't look very good. the first full game i saw him in was a couple years ago, USC vs. auburn after that O-lineman talked all that shit on USC, and then we stomped you guys (i say we even though i'm not a diehard USC'er, but that is my home town). well he looked like shit in that game. and i saw him against (georgia i believe?) he looked awful there too.

i don't know, i could be wrong, but i just don't see campbell being anything more than a career journeyman/backup in the nfl. there are worse jobs in life, so he should be satisfied with that

Nope, but Rat might hold a grudge against the Pats. Brady went in the sixth round, Rat in the seventh. The Pats had the choice of either one

Um, he owned Georgia, along with every other team he played this year. You are judging him based on two of his worst games from last year, when he had a terrible offensive coordinator/QB coach. The fact is that the scouts are high on him, he was the offensive MVP of the South team in the Senior Bowl, and he has the tools to be a surprise QB in the NFL. Most importantly, unlike many more talented QBs like the Mannings (and less talented QBs like Rattay), he is a proven winner.

he is a proven winner IN COLLEGE!

lets ask the following players what winning in college means for you in the pros:

* Ken Dorsey - compiled better stats and a better record in college. to top that off, he won a national championship
* Akilli Smith
* Ryan Leaf
* Jim Druckenmiller
* Heath Shuler

the list goes on. college doesn't mean jack shit in the pros. i told you bruvuh, he won't be shit in the nfl. if he proves me wrong i'll be glad to eat crow.

p.s. i highly doubt i'll be eating crow regarding that anytime soon*

* and by soon i mean ever

anyone else hoping Clarett looks horrible at the combine? I'd love to see him go in like round 7, or go undrafted.

i hope clarett gets drafted late. i would actually even be interested in drafting him for the niners if it came in the 6th or 7th round. i think he has a chip on his shoulder and could possibly be productive in the league. but who knows, he is a straight out little bitch for all this lawsuit shit

rumors on sportstalk radio have the chiefs trading priest to the dolphins for surtain. time will tell if this rumor is legit

WTF?

Well, he will help their defense and they do have LJ...but I'm not sure you wanna trade Priest, even with the injury concerns. Damn, everyone's interested in Miami:

Travis Henry
Priest Holmes
Shaun Alexander
Edgerrin James

well you have to look @ it like this from KC's perspective:

* Priest says every offseason he contemplates retiring
* They were incredibly productive on the ground even without him
* They have blaylock and johnson who seem to be capable
* You have a completely shitty defense

but, even with that said, look how champ bailey, a "shutdown corner", fared in denver. he got abused and didn't help that team much when it mattered in the passing game

And why wouldn't they? Miami is a team built around a feature back, but without one. They have a good D and a new head Coach, and no passing game to speak of. Conditions are ripe for a RB to come in and be the team's savior.

No, i am not joking.

Draft Antrel Rolle, Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, or Carlos Rogers. At least one of those should be there at 19 and each are described as being "elite" corners.

It sounds like typical sportstalk radio bullshit. Priest has already committed to coming back next season, and is in fact actively persuing Ty Law to come to Kansas City, even offering up his house for Law to stay in for a while should he sign with KC.

This whole rumor started when Nick Saban and Dick Vermeil spoke for nearly an hour at the Senior Bowl. The rumor was that it was LJ and a 2nd rounder for Surtain. As it is now, the Chiefs would only offer picks. Since he came to town, Vermeil has been the "mastermind" of the draft, and he threw a fit when Carl Peterson stepped in and picked Larry Johnson as an insurance policy. Peterson has too much of an ego to trade away LJ, considering it's been his best pick in around 8 years, which is saying something.

I just pray Law isn't persuaded by Priest, considering Surtain, and possibly Ken Lucas or Smoot (longshot he ever leaves Washington) are possible choices at CB. Law has said he wants 12.5 million in bonus, which would preclude KC from doing anything, since their owner Lamar Hunt is a tightwad.

If all of the guys are available, I'd like to see the Chiefs pick Edgerton Hartwell or Kendrell Bell, as well as Surtain, and then that frees them to take the best defensive player on the board, hopefully someone like Carlos Rogers.

What the fuck? I hadn't heard the Priest to Miami rumors, but why in the hell does every back in the country want to go to the Dolphins? Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James have both shown interest in heading to Miami as free agents.

Granted, the team should have been better last year without Boston's injury and Williams's retirement, but they've still got shit at QB. Plus, they have an unproven coach. Doesn't make much sense.

norm chow won't succeed with the titans.

p.s. poor leinart, he said he would have probably gone pro if he knew chow was going to leave. he is bullshitting though, he literally would not have been physcially able to throw at the combine because of the surgery on his arm. he kept the injury hush hush though

I think Chow will do alright. He's got the work ethic for the pros, at least (he doesn't golf like Spurrier, anyway). I don't understand what the Titans get out of the deal, though, because he'll be gone after one season. He just wants a college head coaching job, and this is his means of getting one.

Question for Seattle fans. Is Shaun Alexander overrated? Also why did the Redskins give up a 5th round pick to rent Thrash for a year. It says he is a free agent. That team has issues. :)

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
shaun is not underrated. he's a beast. his first rela breakout season he rushed for something like 1400 yards while only starting like 9 games, because Holmgren was too fucking stupid to bench Ricky Waters till he got hurt.

news and notes:

*San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the 49ers "might" be interested in Randy Moss.

*Hasslebeck possibly coming to San Fran? Reports are if the Seahawks don't resign him, we may make a run.

*Ty Law likely to be released by the Patriots.

*Drew Bledsoe supposedly on the trading block with the Bills wanting to get J.P. Lossman in the starting lineup.

*The following people are very likely to be franchise tagged: Drew Brees, Orlando Pace, Julian Peterson. I know it is widely known all 3 of these guys "probably would" have been tagged, but there is somewhat official word from reliable sources that each one has been told he will be tagged as no deals could be worked out.

*Jerry Rice will sign a 1-day contract with the 49ers on Monday and announce his retirement.

*Sources close to the Packers say Brett Favre is now likely to play another year.

Vick's progression? :lol :lol

Last time I checked quarterbacks were supposed to be able to throw the ball consistently. But if you call progression running like he always has and being able to hand the ball off to decent RBs then yeah....he's progressed nicely.

I keep hearing reports that Alexander is interested in coming to philly. He would not be a good fit at all. We need someone to compliment Westbrook. I would rather have Anthony Thomas or Lamant Jordan.

As much as I love McNabb Philly needs a second veteran QB that would be able to handle the team in the playoffs and Superbowl should they get back in. McNabb just can't handle the make or break games. It's a hallmark of his career. I was listening to sports radio and some guy was listing game after game in which when the going got tough DM would choke. All the way back to when he was QB at Serycuse(shit I fucked that schools name up), he was thrwong up on the field during the last drive of one game.

After that I would look for a good FB. West brook needs someone who can open up a lane for him and Philly wouldn't have to pull a line man out of place. As well as being an extra reciever on those short yardage plays were the defense are thinking that they are going to run Westbrook.

The Eagles would be stupid to get a stud running back (They won't, but they'd be stupid anyway. People keep talking about how much money they have under the cap...they ALWAYS have money under the cap. They always have it because they never spend it) because Reid would never use him. Alexander is the second best back in the league in my book, but if he went to Philly he'd be lucky to get a thousand yards. It's just not how they play. Unless they have a major overhaul of the coaching staff, or at least the coaching philosophy, they're not going to make use of a star back.

Granted, if they would run the god damned ball, then they would quite possibly be the best team in the league.

meh, lions fan here. :(

we've got the number 10 pick. not a bad spot, but not great either. they need to go after a d-back or two, and try to pick up a lineman. Its time to start filling in role players. Roy Williams, luckily, seems to be the real deal, and if Charlie Rogers can stay healthy it'll be a LETHAL 1-2 combo in receivers. And Harrington is in his magical 4th year, which is when breeze and peyton manning both started tearing shit up. Here's hoping...

EDIT: Oh yeah, by the way, QB of the draft will be Charlie Frye.

Ritchie is one of the best FB's around. He was injured since week 4. Hopefully we resign him.

Alexander would complement Westbrook (and that team) really well IMO, because at the end of the day, as talented as he is, Westbrook is more of a 3rd down type guy than a fulltime runningback.

The more you give Westbrook the ball the better. He can break it off for a TD at any time. Alexander is the same way, it wouldnt work. We just need a good power back to grind out the tough yards. Maybe Buckhalter can come back from injury and fill that role. There are also rumors about us getting Musin Muhammad or Jerry Porter. If thats the case we wont ever have to run anyway. :)

NO MOOSE DON'T DO IT

eagles made some smart moves by trading aj feeley for miamis 2nd rounder (it will be a high second), but we still have a better draft upcoming than the eagles. infact, you guys owe us a 4th rounder i believe (because whiting only played in 3 games, and that was part of the contracts stipulation). you also owe baltimore a 3rd rounder if i'm not mistaken, but i maybe.

niners have the best draft upcoming, and you know it!

Its a 6th rounder to the 9ers. Im not sure about Baltimore, we have at least 2 picks in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd though, and one in the first... and an extra 5th from james trash. Also LOL at the Seahawks if they cut Bobby Taylor. Someday the rest of the NFL will learn.

yeah i can't believe the seachickens signed bobby taylor TO PLAY NICKLE BACK! freaking retarded nfl teams overpaying for players past their prime. i am cool with having taylor as a nickle, but for the price they paid? no. same with troy vincent.

p.s. it is as if the niners have 2 first round picks :D
