Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Want to play religious zealot as that bird race. I know they are a religious race. Is there anything in-game that puts emphasis on them being religious?

Well actually, the avian character you play has a background through codex entries. Apparently the one you play is atheist, hence why you fled your home and the wrath of the stargazers.

But this is Starbound. If you want to say that your character is super religious, go ahead. Just don't expect it to effect how the other religious zealot npcs react to you.

As a Starbound noob I keep seeing references to savegame wipes - I get the impression that the next release will wipe our savegames. Is that correct? When's that likely to happen?

Yes. There will be another character wipe soon. Sometime this month, but it is supposedly the last one, as it is the patch to fix updating issues as far as character save files go. World and ship wipes however, I am not sure about.

Can't wait until they do the final wipe so I can start playing in confidence again.

Same. I was really enjoying the game a good bit but this last time before the most recent wipe I'd done so much and me and my friends made so much progress that we were all a good bit deflated when it happened.

We have yet to boot the game back up but I know we all will once we know stuff will stick going forward. We knew it would happen going in but that didn't change the fact that it hurt when it did.

Well that is super disappointing. So much for bringing my righteous imperialism to neighboring planets.

1) What is the fastest way to get to a new planet? I am still on my first one.
a) Online, how can my friend join me on the new planet?
b) Should I try beating the first boss before going to another planet?
2) Besides hopping to a new planet, is there anything I can do about Meter Strikes?
3) I am playing online with my friend. Any chance she can teleport to my ship?

1. Get coal (or chop wood and use a furnace to turn it into coal), deposit it in the fuel panel, then sit down in the captains chair at the front of your ship and pick a new planet. Right Mouse Button to zoom out to the system / sector screens.

1a. Invite him to your party (plus sign under your character portrait) and then click your portrait and select "Teleport to ship." He can then beam down to whatever planet your ship is orbiting.

1b. Probably not a bad idea, yeah.

2. Build underground, that seems to be the only solution.

3. See 1a, change gender-specific pronouns to feminine form. Profit.

Having my saves wiped has kept me from jumping in yet, but been really anticipating this game after putting so many hours into Terraria. It just appeared to have so much more to do and looked more...alive I guess? But how does it compare content wise to Terraria now post 1.2? I know it doesn't have everything it will have at launch yet but I'm just curious how it stacks up as it currently stands.

Beyond the core conceit of traveling between unique planets, it doesn't. There's an impressive diversity of structures and biomes that can be spawned on a given planet, but unfortunately the cave systems aren't as much fun to explore as they are in Terraria. The items and bosses aren't there yet either.

Anyone having trouble accessing a Multiplay server or their website? I have a player who claims he can't connect. I can connect fine, but decided to restart the server anyway.... but I can't get to the control panel to do it.

Agreed, and it doesn't seem that the ground is as deep, although I'm assuming it will come at some point. I've already put in an ungodly amount of time, and can only imagine when that time comes.

Haven't been following, is this coming soon? Played a bit last week with friends but wasn't keen on going too far down the tech tree before another possible wipe.

Kept playing a bit but it seems so far it's all about digging, build the stuff needed to build what is needed to get to the next sector, repeat. Is there more to it, or in the plans?

If your goal is to get to the highest level planet possible and get the highest level equipment possible, that's how you do it.

If you enjoy making buildings (before the meteors got added) there's that, and if you enjoy looking at lots of random planets with weird monsters and occasional structures, there's that. I feel like a/the main draw of the game is exploration and building, rather than purely maxing all items and techs as fast as possible. What would be left after that -- boss rush with max abilities?

I see, thanks for answering. A bit of a downer about the caves as that was what I enjoyed a lot in Terraria. It's still early though so I'll keep my hopes up.

What's so special about about Terraria's underground system that makes it different from Starbound's? They're seem to be both the same, in regards to content?

Large areas of pure rock, occasional patches of open caverns, deeper you go different layers of rock, random structures underground, treasure chests, monster get harder the deeper you go, lava, etc.

Maybe you might be referring to the dungeons (aka the large structures that extend underground)?

I know I run the GAF server... and hardly visit GAF World... but I havent seen a single meteor strike yet?
Is it really as common as you guys make it out to be, because its not happening on my end?

The world generation in Starbound is bad. Caves are fewer and less climbable, there's more space in between biomes, and there's less separation of ores so there's less incentive to find deeper cave systems. Also the enemies aren't that much fun to fight. They weren't great in Terraria but some of the biomes did set up mildly interesting fights (ice, spiders.) Obviously there's no jungle equivalent.

Honestly the "dungeons" in Starbound are good, and more of them would be better. I wasn't a huge fan of Terraria's dungeon. I didn't dislike it at all but I'm not attached to it.

I'm not seeing it?

They actually had to patch in an ore distribution fix to make it EASIER to get ore. And as you go deeper, ore is much more easier to find (and as long as you know what type of rock to look for, much easier to find certain ores), so that's one incentive to digging deeper.

Caves were never that much easier in Terraria (otherwise, why would all of us go nuts trying to build grappling hooks and looking for the stupid items to prevent fall damage).

Adding biomes into the mix, it depends on the planet. The distance between biomes is relative, depends on the planet size. And the distances of average time it takes to move between such biomes is about on par with Terraria's anyway.

And there's IS a "jungle" biome. Its not as flashy, or hell, a death-trap like Terraria's, but there's jungle biome planets. The difference between "Forest" and "Jungle" is that Jungle biomes have a lot more plant matter, just run across the surface swinging your weapon, and you'll load up on vines and flower petals, and theres lots of different type of soft dirt (mud, clay, etc). There is one thing about the Jungle biome that is probably a key difference though, I believe the jungle doesn't extend underground and is as prevalent as Terraria's jungle. Probably.

To be honest, I'm finding it easier to hop planet to planet and raze the surface of ores and resources than trekkin underground. I'll only start digging down on a planet if I'm feeling adventurous. I think most of us are playing Starbound like that anyway. Its fun to explore the world in Terraria, but its more fun to just hop planet to planet in Starbound.

Which kind of fits in with Starbound theme in the first place.

Meh I was there on day 0 with Terraria (even downloaded the leaked press copy before it got to steam to buy) and it was a far cry from what it is now. I'm sure it will get fixed and improved as we progress.

Beta has only been running for a month and the game has had some substantial changes to the core systems.

Pretty sure we'll see radical changes to the surface and the cave systems of Biomes

Not to mention all of the features that the devs have listed as things they will be implementing.

I don't think any of us are hating on SB. Just making an observation. I haven't played SB since I got spelunky & rogue legacy though lol.

Ofcourse! Game has some crazy ambition!

Well tbh, the pending wipe is killing any form of 'push' to play for me.

But yeah didn't assume there was hating going on, just that sometimes these conversations forgo the status of each project =)

Personally I'm stuck waiting for updates on both Starbound & Terraria 1.2 for Vita.

Yeah it's easy to get ore, which is why digging deep is rarely interesting. I haven't really noticed ore to be more abundant as you dig deeper. Certainly it isn't enough to be worth the effort.

In Starbound you simply do way more digging than you do caving, and most of the large caves are a gigantic open space with fewer shelves or islands or any points of interest to break it up, even at the edges. I've come across a few nice cave systems though, so I'm a bit more concerned with the quantity than the quality.

Of course the main attraction to Terraria's jungle is the underground part. As a cave system it blows away anything I've found in Starbound even comparing just one world to the entire Starbound galaxy I've seen yet. Underground biomes really need to be stepped up in quantity.

You can certainly run along the surface of any Starbound planet and find biomes, buildings, and other cool stuff. That's boring, until you find something cool, then a couple/several minutes later you're done with it and it's boring again. The game holds up as it is without a very good underground, it just doesn't hold up to Terraria.

He asked how it currently stands. If we're talking about the release version of Starbound, I don't see why it would do a single thing worse than Terraria at that point. It's already more fun today than when I first played Terraria, which was after that game's release.

Gafworld does have a fridge if you're REALLY desperate for it lol.

And meteor strikes are a weather phenomena. You can be unlucky and find a chain of systems with meteors as the weather or be lucky and find a chain of systems that don't have meteors listed. A few days ago I've been seeing meteors all the time but now I have just been getting regular rain.

Wait SB is out on vita?

Nope. Not for a while.

Already found a stupid fridge on my last run. Stole 20 of them.

I really havent seen any meteor strikes yet... I must be picking the boring planets. Havent seen any acid rain either...

I know it was recommended to build underground to protect from meteor strikes, but has anyone actually made a airshield yet? When we had the Terraria server, that was sort of the primary purpose of the Nyan Cat originally. A long, stretch of blocks that would take any impact strike from the sky.

Not that I am aware, but I suppose that would be a great idea for when the character wipe finally happens. We can build a concrete dome or something on the surface.

Well if the next wipe is just chars and not worlds, I can get started on an orbital ring that have different levels to pretty much catch anything. All turret lined :P

Right now gafbunker is the current gafworld given how I'm too lazy to make another gaftropolis at this time (and I don't have the materials yet)

Edit: I think gafworld doesn't have meteors as a weather pattern though given how long I've worked on it. Haven't seen a single meteor there

Well, if it is just characters then yeah, I will definitely help out too. I will either way, but I suppose I could dedicate some spare time to helping out. At the very least we could get some screenshots when we are done.

Ah sorry jumped in without reading the full context. Looking forward to seeing the game mature. Can't wait for the updates to just be monthly content =)

1) How do I unpoisen myself?
2) Me and my girlfriend used my ship to warp to another plant, but we are both unable to warp down to the planet. WHY?

EDIT: Number (2) fixed its self. idk what that was about.
So how do I heal from being poised?

So you can just steal/ use everything that is on a other players ship if youre in the same party?

Is there any way to safely store youre stuff in this game?

We get the inability to warp down to a planet every now and then. Just banging away on the down button eventually gets us down there.

One of the things that they will be adding is the ability to lay claim to a planet. From what I read it appears that making a planet your home will not be free, but it will also allow you to safely store your stuff there. People wont be able to fuck with your buildings and whatnot.

For now though you could just store things in your single player game.

Personally though, I just don't really join parties with people I don't trust.
