Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Pic of the day. The ropes surrounding the ring. You can actually use the stretchiness of the ropes to do a spring jump. However, you can't pull on them to launch yourself sideways in a lariat attack though.

This match is so intense!

What?

Where's Mega Man going?!

H..He's climbing the rope!

Don't do this! DON'T DO THIS!!!

OOOOOOOHHHHHH!!! HE'S BROKEN IN HALF AND HE TOOK ZELDA WITH HIM!

Absolutely a Punch Out stage. The "Smash Bros" on the LED signage in the background has the same gradient on it as the Punch Out Wii logo:

So apparently people think that mydadworksatnintendo.tumblr.com is a real leaker.

He's not, it's a tumblr blog I made to collect all the fake "leaks".

Kokonoe is my waifu.

EDIT: I want these lovelies to be on the new page. I plan to get both versions of Smash, but man... 3DS version has something special to it.

(It must be my OoT nostalgia. First the Gerudo Valley stage, and now the Saria-on-a-stump trophy!)

Smash for 3DS will be amazing.

Might just ignore Smash for Wii U since i don't have people to play with, and just settle with the 3DS version.

I thought this was pretty obvious, considering "my dad works at nintendo" is a classic leaker "reason/source".

It's hilarious, considering the fact that it actually happened before but only few rumors that ended up being real.

Yeah, here is more explanation.

Whenever I would post tidbits about this, I got a couple of requests to make this its own thread, so I decided to go ahead go through with it.

So, the boxing ring stage. You've seen it, I'm sure. Some people aren't exactly sure if it's a Punch Out related stage, if it's a Kirby themed stage, or just a generic new boxing ring stage just for kicks. Well, I'm gonna tell you that this stage is a Punch Out themed stage for a multitude of reasons. So let's begin I guess...

First off, the audience is human, so you can rule out any possibility that this is a Kirby themed stage (all Kirby boxing rings have Kirby characters instead). The marquee's in the background are all dot styled, which is consistent with the marquees in Punch Out Wii, and even the title screen and round indicators for Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Various dot styled marquee screens: http://i.imgur.com/sgmo0ru.png

All logos in Punch Out Wii are adorned with clusters of stars, which are usually in 3's because triple star punches are the most powerful punch in the game, as well as the "leaf vines" on the sides (forgive me; I don't know the term for this) and a giant star somewhere in the middle. The logo in the ring, while being smash themed, shares all of these characteristics.

The ring ropes are also identical in both color and configuration as the Major Circuit ring in Punch Out Wii. Similarly, the corners are all identical colors and positions as the Punch Out Wii corners. The logo in Smash also features a ribbon at the top, which is a direct throwback to the World Circuit ribbon at the top and bottom of the logo.

Also, as a random tidbit, the ribbon in the Smash Punch Out stage says "CHAMPIONSHIP" on it, which is probably because if it straight up said "Major Circuit" on it, it would be flat out obvious. Plus since Smash Bros doesn't have "circuits", championship makes more sense in the context of the game.

The final fight in Punch Out Wii, Mr. Sandman, has a very particular entrance for both his Title Defense and Contender fights. He approaches the ring while there's a green laser light show that goes on behind him. Well, check this out...

Same green laser show.

But yeah, there are an abundance of intentional details that suggest this stage is designed to be a Punch Out stage. There may be a few details that I'm missing, but those were all the details I seemed to notice. Unsure if this confirms Mac being a character, but at the very least there's a stage from the Punch Out series in the game.

Sakurai has failed.

That is the only reason you have a ring.

Did Brawl even have any Rhythm Tengoku references in it at all? I mean, the first came out in 2006 and I don't remember it recognizing the game at all.

Still, the game's turned into a pretty decently sized series since then (and one of my personal favorites fo' sho) so I really hope it gets SOMETHING in Smash 4. A character would be amazing but extremely unlikely, a stage would be rad, but I would really even just take some music from the game playing on the WarioWare stage. Hopefully Tsunku owning the music (if that's the case) doesn't prevent it from happening.

I'm looking through website for daily images, and I think that Nintendog being playable character is still possible. The main model is more likely to be Labrador Retriever.

I don't really bother with avatar bets but even I would take up the bet that a Nintendog will not be a playable character.

If there's no rhythm heaven something in this game, I will send Sakurai hate mail for years to come

Yeah, since Brawl it's grown to deserve a stage at least. Could be a mix of Warioware with music making like Electroplankton. Except hopefully better because Electroplankton never sounded like music.

I'm saying that it's possible, but not likely tho.
I've given up on the Nintendog. It's not happening. The Assist Trophy was probably switched to a French Bulldog because that's one of the main breeds in Nintendogs + Cats. Also, no matter the breed, a Nintendog is a Nintendog, and so it would be strange for a single character to be both playable and an Assist Trophy. It would be like making the male Wii Fit Trainer an AT.

Yeah, it's good point.

Considering what happened with ROB in Brawl I wouldn't be shocked tbh. (not that I expect nintendog or any confirmed assist playable.)

Yeah, here is more explanation.

This is funny because I was just doing my own research on boxing rings and Punch-Out!! boxing rings in particular to see how much matched up. Though my research wasn't as thorough and all I came up with was that it is indeed a boxing ring (and not a wrestling ring) and that the rope colors are the same in Smash as they are in Punch-Out!! Wii.

The only inconsistency I could find is that the neutral corner to the left of the blue corner is yellow in Smash, while it's white in Punch-Out!!.

4upO58F.png

Still, most signs are point toward it being a Punch-Out!! stage.

EDIT: Intelliheath pointed out to me that there is a yellow corner in Punch-Out!! Wii, though it's to the right of the blue corner rather than to the left. He also explained rings in circuits have their own unique colors, and since this would be a "Smash Circuit," so to speak, Sakurai may have come up with original colors for it.

I can't wait for the pic of the day showing mac in the boxing ring stage with the miiverse comment of

"Little mac returns as an assist, he feels at home in the ring"

You guys are totally off-base with the Nintendogs predictions.

Clearly the playable rep will be one of the commentators from the Nintendogs Dog Show, and his moveset will consist of summoning trick-performing dogs to attack opponents. His Final Smash will be summoning a pack of German Shepherds.

CLEARLY

We need Archie and Ted as a team like Ice Climbers.

Here is a link to low resolution two players Punch Out Wii matches but we can see the yellow ring post in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=kCC4-4QebMA#t=52

However, the colors of ring posts changed frequently in the Punch Out series, so I wouldn't be surprised that Smash Circuit will have it's own colors.

Wasn't it only a GBA game during Brawl's time?

When it comes to pop culture, no "ring-related franchise" (boxing, wrestling or otherwise) is better known or more well-loved than Punch-Out. I mean, they even play the Punch-Out theme at NBA games. It's a classic.

As such, Sakurai is not going to put in something that could be very easily seen as a boxing ring, and have it not be Little Mac's level.

I don't think it'd go over well letting you beat up a realistic, non-anthropomorphic dog...

ofc i know its not real i just thought the images looked cool lol

everything about the blog looks fake so im pretty sure no one is that stupid

So Little Mac confirmed, then?

There have been levels for franchises with no reps before, but I still feel that his chances are very good.

Speaking of stages with no reps, if we don't get an Advance Wars rep, I hope we at least get a stage, complete with raging chunky-bit battle.

While Golden Sun is my dream rep, I would settle with Advanced Wars in a heartbeat.

I'm still not convinced of the arena's origin as a Punch-Out stage. Every other stage that has been shown so far (save this one that is likely a part of a single player mode and not a normal stage) has had its origin been immediately obvious, by either designed to be instantly recognizable or just flat out using uprezzed assets from the source. The arena's supposed connections to Punch-Out are a lot more tenuous (and many of the cited examples aren't exactly Punch-Out specific).

It just seems strange to me that they would design such an unspecific stage for Punch-Out, especially when it just had a major console release a few years ago to pull designs more closely from as has been the case for all other stages so far.

I don't know, there's just this feeling in the back of my mind that keeps telling me it's a generic Smash Bros. stage. Which, if that were the case, would be pretty bad news for Little Mac.

And Animal Crossing. And PictoChat.

There are also Nintendogs and Pilotwings stages this time around, but nobody's anticipating playable characters from those series.

Pilotwings could be for Mii, since Pilotwings has Wuhu Island.

What makes me suspicious of the boxing ring is he hasn't eleborated on it as much as other stages. I don't think we even have a name for it yet. Makes me think he's holding off until a possible Mac reveal or something.

I don't think anybody considered a Nintendogs playable character ....

A pilotwings plane would be awesome, but still insane too

Also the Picto Chat one was awesome.
Nikki's stage to compensate ? =(
