Destiny's team size is now around 500 people

Definitely the game that Cliffy was talking about when he said a next-gen new IP needed 10 million sales to break even

I sure do hope the final product is amazing.

That's not that crazy for a multi-year project. Call of Duty games need to hit a similar mark on yearly basis. This, like GTA 5, will be a title people are buying for multiple years, I'm sure it will hit that mark easily enough.

hope the beta changes my mind cause i have 0 excitement for this.

supposedly Destiny is the big AAA shooter that wants you to enjoy a campaign and co-op more than three times at best.

If you've played co-op Halo SP , you should be excite.
it's the game where you visit places several times because saving the world is great but looting afterwards offer compensation for your hard work.

If they're going to do annual releases then some of those people are already working on the sequel. Also, headcount PR figures are like budget PR figures: easily manipulated for effect.

Not really sure that's accurate, seeing as how Bungie seemed to want to break it off and do their own thing. I'm pretty sure they felt they'd outgrown Microsoft.
From what I read MS were unwilling to foot the bill for this and passed on it. Don't think it has anything to do with Bungie relationship with MS at the time.

That...makes me kind of worried actually. Projects of that scale are unbelievably difficult to land. What makes it surprising is how poor a job Bungie has done demonstrating the scale of Destiny. On paper it sounds vast, but we have yet to see any of said vastness. Here's hoping.

This is a huge ambitious project unlike something that has ever been made and people want the entire thing spolied in previews? I was so disappointed that Bungie more or less showed every single location in Halo Reach in Vidocs and trailers leading up to launch. There were no "Wow what a cool location" moments when actually playing the game since we already saw it through Bungie made previews. For something so new and groundbreaking don't you want to experience it fresh on 9/9/14 and not have everything spoiled for you? What does have me worried is the general lack of hype that seems to be surrounding this game. Anytime there is new Destiny news it dies off after a page or 2. Being that it seems pretty apparant that Destiny is indeed the mystery title that needs 10 million in sales to just break even according to the one and only Clifford B I would be concerned if I were Bungie.

I think the problem is that the details are still fairly vague, so you can't really discuss much. I feel the beta is ridiculously important for Bungie to get right as it sounds like you can't really describe what Destiny is, you actually need to play it. I hope it is able to demonstrate itself properly in the beta and not have too many technical issues which put people off.

Going back to the scale of the team. From what I have read, the team has scaled up slowly over time. Initially for the design and concept stages there wasn't many people working on the project at all. Now though it is all about generating large amounts of content and then testing that content on four platforms, so quite a bit of resource is needed.

The scale of the destinations must be pretty hard to manage. I think they said the max size for a destination is 2 km by 2 km. then there are multiple destinations per planet / moon (the moon has at least 5), then there are at least 4 confirmed worlds and at least 3 more speculated. So filling potentially 35 x 2 km by 2km locations with lots of content will take a lot of people, thats without engineering, sound, cinematics and so on.

I don't think it will actually be as many locations as that and they won't all be as large as that at launch, but there is post launch support to bring what Bungie said as 'something new to do every time you log on'.

500? Yikes and working with activision that don't end well. Also so many people working on that game and you can't fly in space with your own ship?

Same here. And I'm a huge Halo fan.

same here, but i'm not a huge halo fan.

That being said, I barely played any of the multiplayer ever. Just with some friends in college occasionally. Seemed like fun.

This game just looks boring and bland like Borderlands 2 did. I want them to change my mind though, because the concept sounds like it possibly could be really good.

Microsoft did indeed pass on the project, as did some other partners. MS did not like the Bungie's demands of IP ownership + huge investment.

I have a feeling this is Bungie's idea on how to blow this game up to epic proportions and let word of mouth sort of sell it.

We can see videos, art work, talk about gameplay ideas, etc, but until the player has it it's all "good on paper."

I'm really hyped for this and have the utmost confidence in Bungie to catch lighting in a bottle twice.

The beta I hope will speak in spades about what Destiny is setting out to do, and hopefully confirm my gut feeling that this will be the next "big" thing for FPS'.

Everything I've seen for this just looks like Borderlands only without the charm and personality. I just don't think that's enough to justify so many people and a such a huge budget.

oh boy. This shit will need to sell BIG
Didn't Cliffy B make some weird tweet once about how some new AAA franchise will have to sell 10 million to just cut even, or something like that?

I can imagine more and more that it was Destiny he was talking about.

I'm definitely curious and excited. I want to know what exactly is Destiny, what happens when I boot up the game? That bit I'm not sure on yet. It's ambitious but confusing as to what actually happens in the game.

They have to be, its Activision cash cow for the next 10 years once the first one is released.
Plus if all holds up what we know about the road map for those next 10 years are true then they really need so much people next expansion will be fall 2015.

I've been extremely, EXTREMELY skeptical of this game so far. I love Bungie to death, I'm a huge fan of the games that they create. But something has been off about Destiny. Sure, Bungie holds info back and doesn't blow their load on their games, but they're holding back so much that it is actually affecting my outlook on the game. That's not right. I've never had that problem with an unreleased Bungie game before. We've seen like, 4 environments significantly, and nothing more. We haven't seen the competitive multiplayer. We haven't seen the "super massive" scope we've been promised.

We're within 10 months of the release date. I feel like there should be more dirt on this game by this point, even by Bungie standards and practices. Something just feels really off.

I'm still hoping for some huge reveal that bends me over and rails me in the ass with its awesomeness and proves me wrong. A reveal that would totally expel the doubts I've had, and justify the huge amount of time and money spent on this game. I really, really, want to happen. I love Bungie too much for that not to happen.

But I really don't know if that's gonna happen like previous Bungie games. That's what is freaking me out.

My most anticipated next-gen game (even if it's cross gen), the scope and Bungie's track record make me very excited. Can't wait for the beta

How hurt will Bungie be if this game doesn't sell multiple millions?

That sounds like a lot of people to pay. I'm sure they have lots of money to play with from the Halo years, but still.

Bungie won't be touched. They're on contract. They're paid already.

Activision would have to deal with it.

Well, sort of—development advances cover dev costs, but Bungie's contract can and will almost certainly be terminated if Destiny doesn't reach certain sales targets. It would be devastating for not only Bungie, but potentially have very serious repercussions for the entire industry.

September 9th is less than 8 months away. The beta will likely release within 6 months, which is plenty of time to acquire your metaphorical lube.

I doubt that Bungie has a contact that would leave them in the lurch in that event. Do you really think that would be the case?

Either way, those 500 employees are payed for, at least for Destiny 1.
The contract we read had serious caveats if the game underperforms.

I get the impression these are actually almost all Bungie employees instead of contractors.

I'm sure they have hundreds of production artists (prop/object, environment, character modelers and animators) in Asia contracted from Virtuos and other similar outfits. Everyone does.
