Oh snap, TOM HANKS AND BRYAN CRANSTON FOR SEASON 2, COME ON PEOPLE WE ARE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS HERE.

The issue I have with Tom Hanks is he doesn't inspire dark and depressing past of the season 1 protagonist. HBO would have to get Michael Fassbender or ... Liam Neeson to live up to the casting of McConaughey. Bryan Cranston is a good choice. HBO can afford him.

Also Robert DeNiro, if he actually want to act again.

edit: wait they need US actors for the series right? Never mind my first 2 suggestion.

Just watched that pilot episode.

The show is really damn interesting, and I'm all hooked on watching it now. I love the dynamic between the two cops. Really very different perspectives.

However. It has to be said, that 90s deep south America has to be the most depressing looking, grey, backwater, intelligent devoid looking place I've seen. Jesus Christ the whole tone of the show was so fucking depressing (I know that's probably their shtick, but damn).

I live in the UK and it's pretty damn grey here, but nothing like that.

I really liked the episode, but my first language isnt english so I had a little trouble with the accent.

Can anyone tell me why they investigate the little girl that "ran with her dad" and how it relates to the victim ?

Is it the same girl, or are they related ? Was she the mom ?

If you listen really carefully (the audio is hard to hear I find) then just before they went to the house the 2012 Woody Harrelson or MM is asked in the interview why they checked out the house. The answer they give is "Oh, I dunno. Just a hunch".

But yeah, they didnt have much to go on and MM thought that they should check it out as it could be related to their girl.

The implication, I believe, is that whoever committed the crime had likely done something like this before. Its specifics made Rust reach that conclusion.

As such, another girl who went missing years before in the same area might be just such a case.

yep, thats how I saw it.

I don't know why but I really want to see Henry Ian Cusick in Season 2 or beyond after watching LOST a few minutes ago.

Well, actually now I see the US only actors thing above. What is that about?

I thought it was great, a little slow, but great. Both main characters are interesting, Woody Harrelson's more as a straightforward, personable foil to Rust and Rust... he's clearly the star so far. Martin's implied
infidelity or at least the start of an affair
makes him a lot more believable. What other impressions? The scene with Martin's wife and Rust gives you just a hint that Rust has not completely withdrawn into depression yet,
that comment she makes about being drunk at the dinner table irked him enough to explain his behavior.

It seems that they're
suspecting Rust has some involvement with the present day(2012) murder.
I wonder if that will be one of the ominous themes they'll be coming back to as the story catches up, or if I'm just reading too much into it.

I'd like to see Clancy Brown and John Hawkes in this

The dinner table scene in which Rust reveals the fate of his daughter to Martin's wife was also memorable. The nonchalant delivery by Mcconaughey and the 'shit I just walked into a massive minefield' look on Michelle Monaghan's face was subtle, yet effective.

Can't wait for the next episode!

So do I watch the first episode or do I wait for the whole season to be aired?

I watched the first episode and it was great so I will be tuning in every week.

But you know what? I wish I had the willpower to just hold out and wait for the last episode to air before watching the whole season in one go.

But I can't.

I have found that I actually enjoy series more when I am LTTP and can marathon a whole show without delay.

It is a better way to watch actually.

If I had my time again, I would wait for the whole season.

Thanks guys, you have given me more willpower to wait for the whole season.

Which should last me an extra fifteen minutes before I crack and watch the premiere.

Loved it, can't wait for the next one. Love the slow pace and the show just looked really good, fantastic cinematography. McConaughey becoming a serious actor is one of the best things to happen in the past couple of years in terms of acting, he's killing it in everything he's in.

I'm of the opinion that this show is more fun when you get to discuss it with friends/coworkers/online bros leading up to the next episode.

I for one am looking forward to the discussions here with my GAF brethren.

- EW: 'True Detective' ratings
HBO’s hot new anthology drama True Detective opened solid in the ratings Sunday night.

Despite facing the Golden Globe Awards, the freshman debut had 2.3 million viewers — the biggest HBO drama seires premiere since Boardwalk Empire three years ago, and just barely edging out the series premiere of Game of Thrones from 2011. True Detective‘s first replay added another million viewers to the tally.

Though it might seem odd to launch a smart premium drama like True Detective against an event like the Globes, the awards show still draws fewer viewers than a major prime-time football game (which is what HBO would face most weeks this time of year). Also, True Detective feels like a show that’s likely to grow in the coming weeks.

It was late last night so I just watched it off DVR now. I thought it was good.. a bit slow but intriguing. The final scene was very well done and really worked as a great hook for me at least. I kind of cracked up that Rust (who already had the officers go get him Beer) pulled out a flask and started drinking for that scene.

It certainly seems that Rust didn't believe in the guy who was pinned as the killer but Martin (?) did. They had a big fall out. The investigators seem more interested in Rust's story and are mainly questioning Martin about Rust and how reliable he might be. I'm sure the politics of it with the governor/teleevangilist and others will get far more complex.

I was a bit distracted but the opener didn't seem strong for an HBO series. I like the ending music.

Sometimes starting up a new HBO series is like saying hello to old friends; It was nice seeing Lester again as I didn't watch Treme.

So, do we have a suspect pool yet for the killer?

That evangelist pastor dude in the cop HQ near the end is my number one suspect. Sheriff of the town is number two.

I don't think Hart or Cohle are involved, but I bet Hart covered something up.

Great first ep, also i get the impression that McConaughey just act a few notches above Harreslon, what happen to him how did become so good, where have this McConaughey been?

Also the Cinematography is beautiful, it really adds to the story and help setting the tone.

Moar please!!!

S02 i demand Cranston

I think Harrelson is doing equally well. Matt just has a meatier role to play with, Harrelson's job is a bit more thankless. But they play well together.

Matt did romantic crap for a while, and I think he basically just started picking and choosing his projects better and put his whole soul, 100% into it.
