Just got done watching the premiere. Fucking tight pacing, intriguing mystery, fantastic acting by the leads (especially McConaughey) and did what any show worth its salt does and left me aching for more.

Think HBO might have another gem on their hands.

Loved it. Best pilot I've seen in a long time. The looks Marty would give Rust after Rust would say something crazy (I don't sleep, I dream, etc) were hilarious.

Pretty great pilot. I generally find crime shows pretty hard to care about, so as expected the murder mystery isn't really doing anything for me, but the acting is excellent and I like the feel.

I'll be honest though, at times it really made me wish I was watching Hannibal. Specifically with the antlers on the body.

It will be interesting to see if they pull any "unreliable narrator" stuff with one or both of the leads since it is all being told as an interrogation.

Anyone else having issues with HBO go? It stops and takes a good 2 minutes to load... About 12 times as I tried to watch this show.

Had issues with chrome. Works fine on IE.

Just finished my 2nd watch.

One of the detectives questioning Rust and Marty is Bother fucking Mouzone.

That ending is so good: "How indeed, detectives."

I couldn't put my finger on what it reminded me of, and then when I described what I thought of it he mentioned it sounded like The Assassination of Jesse James. I think he's right! Anyone else get that vibe? Slow burn, great character interactions, sweeping cinematography at times...

Is there anything to make of the opening fire? Like a moment that hasn't been explained yet, or was it just to have a really cool opening shot? Or maybe I missed something.

I think the killer did it to attract attention to where he left the body. They say something at the beginning about how the locals found it because there wasn't a scheduled controlled burn.

I'm on a roku 2. Usually HBO go works great but last night and tonight were unbearable.. I may have to watch next weeks episode on my lap top.

Watched the first episode and it looks like a really great detective story about a serial killer. And we need more high quality serial killer series.

But god damn does it need subtitles or what. I could not make out most of the lines from the present day guys.

Yeah I'm certainly hoping for that... when we "see" the past is it reality or just what that character is saying.

Haven't they heard of REM in Louisiana?

Yeah I'm not the best at catching heavy southern accents either. I wish there was a way to get subtitles.

That was an amazing premiere. I'm looking forward to seeing where the season goes.

Also those boobs from that GIF. Good. Sweet. Lord. That has nothing to do with the narrative, but fuuuuuuuuck.

I watched on Comcasts Xfinity TV GomApp and it has a closed caption option. Subtitles definitely helped for the extra southern characters.

So, do we have a suspect pool yet for the killer?

That evangelist pastor dude in the cop HQ near the end is my number one suspect. Sheriff of the town is number two.

I don't think Hart or Cohle are involved, but I bet Hart covered something up.

Suspect list:
Rust
Hunt
The sheriff with all the hunting trophies in his office (plenty of antlers in there…)
The boyfriend of Dora, the guy in the prison
The governor who came into the police station (unlikely IMO)
The guy Rust bitchslapped
The old guy who told Rust and Hunt about the missing girl
The “Lester Freeman” Priest
One of the interviewing cops (what a twist!)
A random trucker
Someone we haven’t seen yet (most likely at this stage)

Great first ep, also i get the impression that McConaughey just act a few notches above Harreslon, what happen to him how did become so good, where have this McConaughey been?

Honestly, his career kind of died off so he had to start taking lower budget movies. I guess he got particular with these movies though because for the last year or 2 he has been on fire with his choices/performances.

The boyfriend of Dora was in prison, so he couldn't have done it. I think the Freeman priest didn't do it. Interviewing cops would have been too young. I doubt it'll be either Hart or Cohle.

It was...good. Can tell there's a lot of potential, the first ep mainly set the table.

Lester Freemon and Brother Mouzone appearances, woot.

Good point, I can see the similarities now after you mentioned it.

Yeah I was just listing all the males in the first episode.

Of all of the ones I listed, only the top three and someone not seen in the episode are realistic answers.

From the promos and trailers however,
they are interviewing the boyfriend a couple more times. So they want information from him about something, maybe they think he knows who the killer is (I think there is a split second in one of the trailers where MM pulls a gun on him but it doesn’t look like its in prison…).

Also from the trailers there are four other prime suspects who were not in the first episode in my opinion. Being:

A biker looking dude sitting by a campfire, potential drug dealer to Rust
A crazy white guy walking around in his jocks and wearing a gas mask (he will be the one locked away in 1995 I reckon). “spaghetti faced monster with green ears” could have been the description of him by a girl under the influence of drugs.
A pretty solid looking dude with beard and longish scruffy hair who says something along the lines of “youve got bad eyes” to MM in a bar
The evangelist

Dunno if it's been mentioned before but one of the trailers (not sure which) had a shot of
Marty looking at a flock of birds that came together in the same symbol that was painted on the dead girl. I remember seeing that and thinking there could be some supernatural element to this show. Probably wrong, but might be interesting

Sky high expectations have been met. Love the subdued humor, acting (not a big shock considering the cast) and cinematography which makes most other shows look like wedding videos.

They kinda do hint at supernatural stuff going on...or at least I think so.

Anyone know how Rust was able to find the "devil catcher" thing in the shed? Did I miss something when he was looking out the window? I mean, you could just blame it on instinct ...

Rewatching the theme song intro sequence. So cool.

I don't think we'll see anything supernatural, but hints to that could be very interesting.

Yeah, that looked really neat.

Probably won't be the supernatural, but shades of Will Graham-esque reality/dream bleeding.

yeah I saw that
I thought it was Rust looking at the birds though
. my hypothesis is that
Rust gets back into the drug scene in an attempt to investigate a suspect who thinks he is a user. He then starts to hallucinate from these drugs at particular points. I think this because there is a scene also in some of the trailers, where Rust is driving and then all of a sudden the street lights all blur together like he is on drugs. He also mentions he doesnt sleep and he may see ghosts, so I think he "sees" some things that are not necessarily true. I personally would be annoyed if there were supernatural elements to the show, it should be based in reality

The humor was really well done. I found myself laughing out loud a few times. Really good dialogue that reminded me a lot of The Wire.

I would hate it if it has supernatural element.

I am watching it the 2nd time. Rust has a long speech about human having too much self conscious. I think it will connected to his sealed past in the previous job (Texas) and likely connect to the real killer too.

Didn't blow me away but I enjoyed it. Really slick closing shot as well. McConaughey was great. Looking forward to the next ep.

Well that makes more sense, I haven't seen any other trailers and
I thought it was Marty

Yeah that would be pretty f'ing horrible...

I'm 99.9% sure there won't be anything supernatural.

But Rust's grip between dream and reality is probably very tenuous at best. Like Will Graham in Hannibal. He mentions dreaming in the episode in a weird way. Pretty sure he'll begin hallucinating.

Supernatural would be horrible; Rust going on hallucinogenic trips would be awesome.

Is it possible to both like it and wish it were something else?

I can see that, yeah. It's interesting, but bumfuck nowhere Louisiana isn't the most riveting (visually) place to set something if you've got to stick to reality.

Food for thought on supernatural possibilities:

It seems like every thing in this show was meticulously written and every line of dialogue has a purpose. Didn't Rust mention something to Hart about seeing/believing in ghosts in a car ride to an investigation scene. Maybe the bird flock that Rust is staring at somehow fit into this puzzle. Rust doesn't seem like he has a good grip on reality and what is going on around him so it wouldn't surprise me if he is just delirious.

Probably am overthinking this though.

When Rust was referring to ghosts, I thought the little girl he saw was his own daughter and he's basically haunted/already on the edge of sanity.

Ah good point, I've only watched it once so the line just kinda whizzed by me. That makes sense now that you say that especially since he mentioned with discomfort that she had passed at the dinner scene.

As someone from outside the US, I think the setting is really good and fits the vibe of the story really well.

There were some awesome shots out near the murder scene and when they were driving around.

I liked the setting a lot.

What a fantastic premiere. Really looking forward to the rest of the season. McConaughey was stellar, and the dynamic between him and Harrelson (and the contrast between them) is great. Loved the deliberate cold stillness of the atmosphere as well.

The setting has its own sense of place and an incredible atmosphere to it. It's almost as if the town is another character on the show. It's grounded, but at the same time otherworldly (in that religious overtones pervade over the whole area)

I wouldn't change a thing about the setting to be honest.
