As someone from outside the US, I think the setting is really good and fits the vibe of the story really well.

There were some awesome shots out near the murder scene and when they were driving around.

I liked the setting a lot.

I've driven through/stopped in one too many rural towns in the south to be too fascinated by them anymore. The atmosphere is great though.

The setting has its own sense of place and an incredible atmosphere to it. It's almost as if the town is another character on the show. It's grounded, but at the same time otherworldly (in that religious overtones pervade over the whole area)

I wouldn't change a thing about the setting to be honest.

I wouldn't change it, I just know where that poster is coming from (if that's where he was coming from at all).

The only thing that I don't like about that show is the name.

"True Detective" just sounds like a horrible compromise they had to make with HBO in order to get viewership. It doesn't play out like an ordinary procedural detective show and is disingenuous to what they are trying to achieve.

When I told a friend about the show she rolled her eyes and said "great, another CBS detective drama" and then immediately I had to go "no no no wait, it's not like that..."

So yeah, bad name, great show.

I can see that, yeah. It's interesting, but bumfuck nowhere Louisiana isn't the most riveting (visually) place to set something if you've got to stick to reality.

Something else, not somewhere else.

You've got two legitimately funny, talented actors and you have them playing the most morose motherfuckers ever. I'm good with that, but after Broadchurch, The Killing, Hannibal... I would just like more personality. Especially from them.

that's good.gif

Great opening. Fantastic acting from both of them, can't sleep on Woody.

High expectations have been met easily.

They figured she might have been another victim of the killer, but I forgot how they reached that conclusion.

But would it fit into the profile of that "occult" killer to go after small children? Especially since the story told to both detectives was that the girl ran to be with her real father.

Later in the episode Cohle called the pursuing of the girl's case "an intuition", but I guess it is personal with him and the story about his (passed) daughter.

Cohle: This place is like someone's memory of a town, and the memory's fading. It's like there was never anything here but jungle.

Hart: Stop sayin' shit like that. It's unprofessional.

Cohle: Oh, is that what I'm going for here?

Hart: I just want you to stop saying odd shit, like you "smell a psychosphere," or you're "in someone's faded memory of a town," just stop.

Cohle: Given how long it's taken for me to reconcile my nature, I can't figure I'd forgo it on your account, Marty.

Hart: :/

You get any sleep last night?

Cohle: I don't sleep.... I just dream.

Hart: :|

Amazing little exchange. Sold me on the characters and the show.

Opposite for me. Talk like that completely takes me out of the story.

I love it for 2 reasons: First, I'm a huge fan of verbose cynicism, metaphors, imagery, observations, etc. in dialogue. For a lot of people it can be too wordy and no longer feel natural, but I love it. Secondly, Woody Harrelson is pretty much playing the role of everyone who would be sick of how Cohle thinks to perfection, and it makes for great low key humor. It's modern day HBO doing an odd couple hard boiled noir story. That exchange is pretty much those characters and the show's tone in a nutshell.

Best dialogue of the episode, I love that scene. "This place is like someone's memory of a town, and the memory's fading." is such an apt, beautiful description of the setting. You instantly know what he's talking about just from the way the place looks.

The one thing that intrigued me the most to find out is how Rust transformed from this smart, yet weird young detective in 95 to being such a redneck/trailer park asshole in 2012.

The name is a tribute to the first American crime magazine of the same name, started in 1924. See here.

As far as I can tell, it serves both to respectfully insert the show into that tradition of anthologizing seedy and grisly noir, and also to maybe hammer nails in its coffin. It's a deliberately uneasy moniker for a show that both honours and subverts its more or less worn-out subject matter.

It's about as perfect as everything else.

Show met and exceeded expectations. I have so many questions. The scene with Rust discussing human evolution and consciousness in the car was probably one of my favorite monologues ever on screen.

I'm most interested in finding out who
Marty and Rust pinned the murders on, and why they were so sure that there wouldn't be any other killings.

- Variety: ‘True Detective’ Cops HBO’s Largest Premiere Audience Since 2010
HBO’s “True Detective” opened Sunday night with a solid 2.3 million viewers, making it the premium cabler’s most-watched debut since “Boardwalk Empire” drew 4.8 million in 2010.

Among the shows that “True Detective” outperformed in its premiere are dramas “Game of Thrones” (2.22 million) and “The Newsroom” (2.14 million) and comedies “Veep” (1.38 million) and “Girls” (870,000).

A replay a couple of hours later brought in another million viewers, according to Nielsen, bringing Sunday night’s tally for “True Detective” to 3.3 million.

Loved the first episode and excited to see it play out over the rest of the season. Hopefully it's a success as I love the anthology format.

Disappointing to hear that HBOGo is having problems right now given that a lot of people would like to watch True Detective. Hopefully they get that sorted out soon. I've heard of a lot of issues when Game of Thrones is airing, but that's typically right when it's released and it settles down within a few hours.

Yea, Its kinda funny watching handball and true detectives. Like in Hannibal we already know about serial murders but in this show its all new ground for these people.

I was already planning on going through Hannibal's first season after enjoying the first episode over the weekend. Now that I've seen True Detective's masterful premiere though, I'm hoping going back to Hannibal won't be too jarring. I liked what I've seen of Hannibal but TD flat-out blew my mind.

I wonder why he was so angry. Seemed like Rust was actually trying?

There's an Behind the Scenes feature on YT for episode 1 where they briefly touch on it.

Well, he might have been trying, but everyone knew something was "off" about Rust from the jump, even the children. I don't blame Martin for wanting to purge his happy home of Rust's unwholesome presence.

Just watched the episode and loved it. Both Harrelson and McConaughey did very well. And yes, the dinner scene with Hart's face when that happened was good.

what are the issues? I watched it Monday morning on HBOGo just fine

If only TD could share some of the hype and rating for Hannibal

Meh, Mikkelsen's Lecter is pretty much the only good thing Hannibal has going for it. But it's kinda spooky how similar the both series are in some of the details... antlers, fly fishing etc.
