MS Japan: We'll balance AAA games & original Japanese games on XB1; talk exclusives

“Since the very first generation of Xbox, we’ve prided ourselves on having worked closely with Japanese developers,” says Sensui. “For Xbox One, we plan on continuing these relations, and we’re currently talking to each and every developer about having them release their best titles [for Xbox One].”
“There’s also Xbox Live, Smart Glass, Cloud, and the use of other original features of the Xbox One that will provide developers with the need of only ‘one device,’ as I believe,” he continues. “I’d also like to plan out a way of making different gaming experiences out there. On the other hand, we’re also continuing our talks to companies about having them offer games that can only be played on Xbox One.”
“Of course. Today’s game industry is similar to what we have in the film industry,” says Sensui. “There are Japanese gamers who enjoy high-scale and high-tech titles, similar to Hollywood movies that are on a global scale, and there are some who enjoy original Japanese content. I believe that it’ll be important to balance the two as we expand from now.”

“That said, while offering excellent games that are released around the world, I’d like to also increase the amount of games that are made for the Japanese gamers,” continues Sensui.

“In order to do that, in addition to the big Japanese developers, we’ll be keeping close communications with the small and medium-sized developers, as we prepare the lineup.”
Thanks, Siliconera

All this sounds good. I sorta wish they would drop smartglass because I haven't seen any cool use for it even dead rising 3 was just ok.

hope hes talking about the platinum exclusive (rumored) because thats the most interersting thing thats going to come out of japan

I would imagine that most Japanese companies would have adopted a "once bitten, twice shy" policy after Microsoft tried this with the 360, and it pretty much failed miserably.

This all sounds great, awesome, and very smart.......................on paper!

It will be interesting to see how it all works out. But there are many years for all of this to come to fruition.

This just sounds like their output with PC games where they give out a comment every year or so that reinstates that it's an important market followed by little to no support. I understand they don't want to come out and say "Fuck it we give up!" and keep a good public perception but whoever thinks this will be meaningful has to come back to reality.

A Japanese exclusive on Xbox One is the worst thing that can happen to a game in Japan. A developer would have to be really desperate to do a deal like that.

PS4s success in the west and inevitable success in Japan isn't going to help any either.

Thank you for that lovely contribution to the thread. First post too. Congrats! SMFH

Its awesome that MS is going hard on exclusives. Whether or not Japan really buys an Xbox One, its great to have exclusive games and franchises in your catalog of games. Here's hoping they port them to the US in English.

I still don't think they should even bother releasing in japan. The system is huge and expensive. It will probably sell than the original xbox.

they can buy exclusives, they have a huge warchest
Are you talking about Microsoft or the Xbox division? Because the Xbox division sure as hell doesn't have a "huge warchest". The operating system and Office portion of MS sure as hell aren't going to hand over money to burn on Xbox.

Phil Spencer tweeted this today:

The creative director who is in charge to the new KI has been tweeting about PD recently. Even changed his twitter background picture to PD.

Why have I been seeing this word so much lately?

Anyways, Microsoft =/= Xbox division. I don't know why people expect them to buy out a bunch of 3rd party exclusives as the install bases continues to grow.

I thought small Japanese otaku games did OK on the 360? Like it filled some very specific niches; none of the big-budget ones, but some small ones (similar to the Vita situation; Vita's doing better, though.)

For the bigger titles, I'm guessing that worldwide/US sales made support worth it (FFXIII did better on PS3, but I don't think it was a bomb on 360.)

I could see this being their last run at Japan; but I imagine they want to maintain ties with Japanese devs so they don't lose out on the library going forward.

what about the money from XB Live? it can certainly purchase a few exclusives

I hope PG signs with MS, at least they will survive that way. If they don't get on board with MS then sadly I don't see them existing in a few years. Too many bombs.

They started off the previous generation with some pretty good exclusives, but by the end of the gen there was nothing to be found.

They had a full year and price advantage, a Tales (now on PS3) two Mistwalker games (now on iOS), two Tri-Ace games (now almost vanished) and Japan still didn't care.

There's an Xbox Division?

Lol, 1 billion isn't a huge sum of money? They've bought exclusives left right and center.

And I think most of you are missing the point, these Japanese games also bolster MS output in the West, as long it's not too obscure these games can be sold globally.
