Nintendo Downloads - January 2014

It's actually quite easy if you know what you're doing. I suggest looking up an online guide somewhere, because there's some stuff you'll NEVER figure out on your own, I guarantee it.

Can you give some examples (in spoiler tags of course) of stuff that one will never figure out on their own? I'm curious as to what they might be.

So everyone is writing scathing shit about VC in Club Nintendo surveys, right? Every little bit helps, though at this point I think it's obvious Nintendo does not give two shits about what the customer wants.

I filled out about 40 things recently and made sure to point out that I wish there were more available, and that I can't buy what isn't there. But I wasn't shitty about it. Honey and vinegar, saying goes.

Yeah, I always talk about how the Wii U VC lineup is really lacking in comparison to the Wii VC lineup at the same point in its life, and other stuff, but there's no need to be a baby about it.

I usually give brief responses as I don't devote much time to surveys anymore. "Abysmal", "total joke", "bafflingly lazy" are some of my go-tos.

And it's ALWAYS set to "extremely dissatisfied".

Mighty Bomb Jack was fine in 1988 when the only other game you have is Mario. Mighty Bomb Jack in 2014 is beyond garbage.

Nintendo please go third party so someone that gives a fuck can release these games for you.

Aksys, Konami and Tecmo-Koei have the lowest backlog completion percentages (17%, 23%, 30%), so it makes sense to see more of their games. Specifically Konami ties Nintendo for second place in released VC games on Wii since absorbing Hudson (71 games each), the top is Sega with 82 who does not appear on Wii U VC. So if you're actually wondering how releases work there's a statistical explanation.

At this point, why even bother buying a single virtual console game on the Wii U? Over a year since launch and not a single N64 game. We definitely won't see any GameCube or Wii games. The whole service is a complete waste.

There are a couple of points in the game where you'll have to have a specific item equipped, be at a specific spot, and crouch for a specific amount of time to progress. There's also points where you'll have to drop garlic on the ground to make important NPC's appear. Sounds like any typical game really, but the difference here is that the games poor translation makes the in game clues pretty much indiscernible.

I don't think third parties were biting on releasing their old N64 and GBA titles which may explain why those consoles still aren't available.

Three VC-ready consoles in seven years and Nintendo still doesn't know how to get the word out about this service.

Doubt it. Much more likely that with other things they've been shuffling priorities and likely teams around. What that ultimately manifests in is anyone's guess but I think plans (whatever they were) are different now. VC isn't a high priority item overall.

Mighy Bomb Jack is a very fun game (yes, even today).
it's certainly not "garbage".

some people seem to miss the point of the Virtual Console service.

See, if I was Nintendo survey reader person, and I saw those kind of replies, I'd probably ignore them, or put your profile in a file of "too angry" users or something.

Also: I can see being pissed at City Connection, but Mighty Bomb Jack is dope. DOPE

On those surveys I also put that VC games that have multi player should also have net play. Maybe it falls on death ears but at least I have somewhere of an outlet to write these things. As much as I want to, I'm not sure how to approach NOA without acting like a little boy in regards to VC. =p

Personally, the disappointment is less "This isn't SMB3/ALTTP" or even "This game sucks", and more that, because we're suffering from a drip feed with VC releases, it's frustrating to see just one game releasing, and decent though it may be, not a classic to justify just that one game until next Thursday. Release Mighty Bomb Jack with 1 or 2 other games within its league, and everything would go dandy. They used to do this in the VC's early days, why did stop all of a sudden? If just one game is going to be released, at least make it a renowned classic that can carry the week on its own, like the weeks with Earthbound, Castlevania IV, Super Punch-Out!!, Megaman X2...

This is, of course, subjective, but I do believe the argument has some merit. Old, simplistic NES games would be much better received if released on pairs or trios, I bet.

I would probably pay a little extra if VC games had online multiplayer, but I can't imagine that being easy or cheap to implement. Not so far as keeping the games at $5 or whatever, anyway. Which is too bad, I'd roast some fools with my mad skillz

I agree. I get annoyed when the lone slot is taken up by like, Donkey Kong 3. At the very least, a first party slot and a third party slot. I feel like they worry about cannibalizing sales with too many releases, but more selection is never a bad thing. And I wouldn't buy DK3 anyway, even if it was the only VC game released ever.

Has Nintendo ever explained why the Wii U VC library is crap compared to the Wii's? It's like there's absolutely no motivation on their part to dip into our past and give us the goods. At the rate we're going I think we'll be well beyond the second year and still only have a fraction of what the Wii had in its first year.

I say open the flood gates- get the N64 on there with all the good stuff and then get us the third party titles like San Francisco Rush, Resident Evil 2, Doom 64, Top Gear Rally, Xtreme-G, Turok 2, Bomberman 64 and so on. Even though I own all of those, I would buy them again to have easy access and a simple way to play them.

Iwata said they want to improve the VC output

Yeah. If people are only going to buy the few absolute best games on each console, it's no wonder Nintendo doesn't release much.

My issue is games are out in other regions and they refuse to release them in other regions, there is no reason for SMB3 and LttP to be out in Europe over a month and not out in NA

Well there were 427 Wii VC games in North America (403 if you subtract delistings). If every publisher currently supporting Wii U VC released all their games there would be 221 (minus N64, Genesis, NeoGeo, TG16, C64 and Arcade titles). If just Sega and D4 started releasing games for their systems that would increase the availability of games by nearly 3/4s. Konami just started TG16 releases and that too could probably allow them to bump to 2 games a week if that started rolling over to North America. That was the difference with early VC and now, more non-Nintendo systems.

Some of those will never make it to VC. Say what you want about Acclaim and Midway, they had some very memorable games for the N64.

If you compare NES/SNES only titles at this point in the Wii U's Virtual Console life, it isn't very far behind. 61 vs 54 when I checked out of curiosity a couple of weeks ago. Of course, that's counting the official VC launch as April, instead of the launch of the console itself (Wii's VC launched with the system).

Not having TG-16 and Genesis (and later Neo-Geo) games frequently coming out is what's hurting the U's service the most. It's good news to see a TG-16 game coming out in Japan, and hopefully that will continue there and arrive stateside (and in Europe).

As to why they haven't stepped it up, especially when Wii U software is coming out too slowly? I have no idea. I'd like to think that Nintendo has been stalling, so they can provide us with a great service: cross-platform play between 3DS and Wii U, forward thinking compatibility for future generations. But really, it just seems clear that Nintendo is having internal issues all around and this is merely more evidence of that.

Also, I can picture 3rd parties being less keen on the idea of upgrading all their games to Wii U. On top of the small userbase, it's not a stretch to assume that many U owners were Wii owners. So 3rd parties are only getting $1/$1.50 a lot of times for their games due to the upgrade program, as opposed to $5/$8.

Shouldn't the VC be a retro gaming paradise?

Nah, this is a retro gaming paradise:

VC is a way to re-monetize those games.

On the plus side, at least Wii U and 3DS offer something new by allowing them to be handheld/portable, whereas the Wii offered nothing other than space saving.

I just don't understand how games like Sonic or SMB3, etc. aren't out. This is preaching to the choir but those games would be good sellers, I imagine. Shouldn't those be the first games out?

We have a Tecmo game coming out this week and it's not Tecmo Bowl? With the Super Bowl around the corner you'd think they'd put that out and/or NES Play Action Football.

Wouldn't it have been cool last year if when you bought Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, it had a download voucher for the original NES version?

Something like Sonic and SMB3, as you suggested, surely would be "evergreen," meaning that buying interest wouldn't go away at the first week of availability.

But yeah, there's a lot that they could do, but don't. Nostalgia should be one of Nintendo's bigger weapons in their fight to squeak out a niche with the Wii U.

If they haven't announced one in 16.5 hours from now, there won't be one on Thursday either. Even if that happens, I still expect one this month. It would mean they decided to do something completely random. Pre-investor meeting still makes more sense though.
