Duane Allman (original lead guitarist for The Allman Brothers). Died tragically in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24. There are many gifted musicians who died young, but I picked Allman because his death wasn't due to a drug overdose or drinking binge, but a complete accident. There is no doubt that had he lived longer, he would be mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix, Clapton, Page and the other all-time great rock guitarists. His playing on Live at Fillmore East at age 23 was already comparable to what many of the best guitarists in history have done.
Michael Biehn (actor). This guy had some big roles in Terminator, Aliens and Tombstone, but never really became the A-list actor he could have been.
Christian Slater (actor). Played the lead in one of the 90's best films (True Romance) as well as a cult classic (Heathers). Then he started taking roles in some of the most god-awful movies imaginable. I don't know who his agent at the time was, but he did a pretty damn poor job recommending scripts. His string of awful films culminated with Uwe Boll's "Alone in the Dark." Now he's doing stage acting, which he's actually quite good at.
Kerry Wood (major league baseball pitcher). In his fifth career start, he pitched a one-hit shutout with 20 strikeouts. He was predicted to eventually become one of the all-time greats. Unfortunately, he had Tommy John surgery in only his second season, and has had multiple arm injuries since then, derailing his career.
