The case may scar him but Iris isn't the only one involved. Godot, Maya and Mia are also largely a part of it all and while Iris has the romantic connection, they all were heavily involved in the messed up final case.

Plus for someone so scarred he sure couldn't take his eyes off her in the detention centre. He also realized that the feelings they shared were real.

Phoenix has dismissed pearls shipping before, tho. And where has Pearls ever been like "Maya told me she likes u lol" she hasn't cuz she knows her shipping is just that, shipping.

We at 5 games now and still no MayaxPhoenix. It ain't happening sis.
