Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

So what's up with the story of the game.. Do the quests stop right after you defeat the first boss? And I'm assuming this is just a beta thing.

correct, the rest is yet to be implemented.
edit:
holy crap, not sure if intended but I planted a few trees around my spawn point for harvesting... they wont stop growing!!! I cut one of them and it gave me 98 unrefined wood from how tall it was!

No more wipes? I was holding because of this.

No more character/ship wipes. Universe may still be rebooted (in fact, I would guarantee it).

People also need to keep in mind that this is still beta and even if they say they won't occur, character/ship wipes could still happen.... but probably not.

I noticed the server is pretty much empty? :(

Not sure what their definition of a low end computer is cause I definitely don't have a low end rig and my stuttering is noticeable.

I'm on an old dual core, it's running smoother than ever, personally.

Guess the starter planet is just empty then, I ran a lap around it and not a single soul was found.

There's at least 4 people on the server right now, according to Netstat.

Its very easy to avoid actual players in this game. It takes a high amount of luck to actually find a planet at random that someone has been on before, let alone actually finding someone on the planet (talking about players here, not NPCs)

Did anyone else have a prompt to opt out of the update? I thought Steam changed the system so you could finally play games without updating, but right click and choosing play game seems to have forced me into the update without the prompt box.

No? Should still be the same as before.

I've tried maybe 20 times now, either copying and pasting the info directly or inputting it myself and the result is always the same. The game tells me that the password is incorrect. I'll try restarting Steam and hopefully it will work

EDIT: still not working

I just entered the server, it works fine for me.

I was able to log in fine, with the same old password and no user name.

why did the thing in the apex lab or temple or w/e make me explode when i pressed e on it. wtf.

Nothing like having a buff shrine with a random chance of killing you in a game with a permadeath mode... lol

Good god, I just had the most awful experience exploring a planet. I havent been sleeping well so I'm all jittery and a bit "crazy" atm.

I go visit the neighbor planet of my starter one and its one of the big ones. I swear I spent 45 min trekking the surface of that planet. It got really bad around halfway point where suddenly the layout started repeating itself but in reverse, including an identical glitch village 1 min apart from the other. It honestly felt that I was going crazy for a second lol.

Anyways, sooooo good to play the game again after 1+ month

BAH.

Ok, so server crashed again. Its back up now.

So, my theory was right, looks like I can't actually PLAY on my actual server. After a while, the server will crash because too many resources are being used.

I will leave the server up while I wait for a hotfix.

Server was super laggy and now booted me off.

Yeah, that was probably because of me. Sorry about that.

EDIT/UPDATE:

WTF.

Ok, server crashed, YET AGAIN. Wasnt trying to play this time.
Let me reboot the computer...

I just placed it

If you place it, and ITS IN THE CORRECT PLACE, the dish should start spinning. If it isn't, you have to move it to another location.

After you've placed it correctly, interact with it (Hit the 'E" key) to initiate the boss fight. Be aware that the item disappears and is gone once the boss fight starts.

It's probably been mentioned, but it can't be said enough times. The music in this game is absolutely fantastic.

Edit: as I typed this I almost choked to death on an asteroid belt, oops!

WELP, SERVER CRASHED AGAIN. :D

Ok, this time, server is gonna stay down until I get my hands on that hotfix.

Yeah, I realized that a bit too late. wasted entirely too many torches.

Yeah, main reason why I use it. I don't run out as quickly.

EDIT:

OH HEY, RIGHT AFTER I TYPE THIS, HOTFIX IS RELEASED.

Go figure.

Ok, lemme get that hotfix, give me a bit to test serverr, then I'll let you guys know when its up.

Hotfix applied, server back up. Lets hope everything is more stable this time.

How can I have a sword in one hand and a shield in the other at the same time?

Method 1) Put the Sword in the L slot and Shield in the R slot.

Method 2) Select the Sword with Left click, and Shield with Right click

I hope everyone is enjoying the latest update. I thought this update would have me back again for a while. For some reason, my drive to play this game has almost totally died. It feels like grinding. Probably has something to do with the fact I've already played it 100+ hours - I've more than gotten my money's worth. Looks like it'll be best for me if I take a long break from this game. Again, hope everyone is enjoying it, and I'll still be watching in interest in how it all develops.

No, this was (probably) the last character wipe. There's still a lot of work to do, they're still in Phase 1 of beta. Full game is probably going to be closer to spring or even summer at this rate.

And before anyone complains, remember how much people were begging for them to release anything playable.

My bad, I meant the final wipe.

The same thing happened again -- I couldn't opt out of the latest update. So I guess either Valve changed their policy or the Starbound developers changed the setting.

Why would you opt out this time?

Its a full wipe, so you wouldnt be able to take any precautionary measures with your loot anyway.

Just realised how good I had it on the first planet I had before the wipe, we landed on a relatively snowy planet but it there tents and campfires everywhere. There was a huge cave system already cut out for us and we got most of the materials we needed relatively quickly. We'd gotten the distress beacon done and fought the boss in under an hour.

New planet and I'm struggling to find even cobblestone, dire rock everywhere, very little iron on the surface, trees are sparse and plenty of poison pools :(

I wouldn't want to for this particular update, but I had been wishing Valve had a feature to allow you to opt out of updates for a long time. I was glad when I noticed it was added, because I could still play old Starbound versions.

Now, if we DO get a bad patch in the future and wish to opt out, we apparently can't again. :P All this assuming there isn't a specific "This update is mandatory" setting or something. I really need another frequently-updated game as a comparison point.

I'm assuming you mean play only in SP then, since you'd be locked out of any MP servers. (Or vice versa, you update and host a server, most people wouldn't be able to get onto your server)

In any case, your Starbound game in Steam is set to DO NOT UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY, but it updated anyway?

Starbound doesn't trigger Steam integration if you launch from the folder, and I haven't seen any Steam-dependent hooks so you could copy entire folder, move elsewhere and launch from there. That way, you can backup previous versions and keep playing them. Works on OSX 10.9 here, but I don't know if the registry may hamper this on windows.

This game is really awful with updates. I think it downloaded 3 480mb patches today. They really need to get their stuff together. At this point I have to guess we are downloading the full .exe each time? Still runs poorly too.
