Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

What exactly did those leaks entail, again?

Rosalina is the only Mario newcomer.
Waluigi and Toad were at once considered, but Waluigi remains an Assist Trophy, and Toad a move for Peach.
Bowser Junior, Paper Mario and Daisy were never considered. Bowser Junior was planned to be an Assist Trophy, but was scrapped.
Fawful is a new Mario Assist Trophy. He acts like Mr. Resetti, but will attack opponents at random.
Diddy Kong will be the next revealed veteran, to coincide with Tropical Freeze’s release date.
Diddy is paired with Dixie Kong as a tag-team, similar to Zelda and Sheik. Dixie has a separate moveset from Diddy, but it’s still being worked on.
King K. Rool is a newcomer, the heaviest character on the roster. He is powerful and can KO light characters with 2 good Smash Attacks. His final smash has him use the blunderbuss and fire cannonballs from the top of the screen while they fly in from the sides as well.
Gangplank Galleon is a stage.
There is a new Zelda character, although it’s kept a secret so far. The names heard most often are Tingle and Ghirahim.
Ganondorf will be buffed, although he still retains some of C. Falcon’s moves. He can equip a sword using his Down Special.
Chrom is a Fire Emblem necomer. He wields the Falchion, and does not replace Ike.
Chrom is expected to be revealed to celebrate the anniversary of the first Fire Emblem.
Lyn’s Assist Trophy from Brawl has been scrapped.
King Gangrel and Aversa are the new Fire Emblem Assist Trophy. Gangrel runs around slicing with his sword, while Aversa flies above using Aversa’s Night. They are the “unexpected” Assist Trophy.
No newcomers for Yoshi or Wario.
Wario’s overalls are now his default attire.
The Kat & Ana Assist Trophy has been scrapped.
Ashley from WarioWare is a new Assist Trophy.
Ridley is a newcomer, and is scaled down a bit. It was a major feat on the development team.
No new Star Fox characters.
Falco is farther away from being a Fox clone.
Wolf is no longer a semi-clone.
Villager has a female costume.
Mr. Resetti returns as an Assist Trophy.
Tom Nook is a new Assist Trophy. He apparently drops bells across the stage, which causes opponents to trip. (Due to Sakurai saying tripping is removed, it’s unknown if forced tripping, like this and Diddy’s bananas will return, or if only accidental tripping is removed.)
Palutena is a newcomer, with her moves based directly off Uprising.
Magnus is a new Assist Trophy, and acts similarly to Little Mac in Brawl.
All Pokemon veterans from Brawl return.
Mewtwo returns.
Mewtwo and Lucario have very different movesets.
No new Kirby characters.
Meta Knight will be revealed sometime in the summer of 2014.
No changes made to the EarthBound series.
All misc. characters return (Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B., Ice Climbers)
Little Mac is a newcomer. He has the look from the Punch-Out!! reboot for the Wii.
The Male Wii Fit Trainer is indeed an alt. for Wii Fit Trainer.
Wii Fit Trainer has a butt attack. It is replaced by a headbutt for the male costume.
King Hippo is an Assist Trophy.
The Ghosts from Luigi’s Mansion are an Assist Trophy.
Snake returns.
Pac-Man will be the final newcomer. He is a secret character.
.

I understand your point but would it be better if you get rid of Falco because Falco is more similar to Fox than Wolf was.

Had wolf been in the game before i would have agreed but Falco is basically entrenched in the franchise.

It's not that i hate the character or i like falco/fox more, i can't really say i have favourites honestly. Perhaps just make him a bit more different somehow. Krystal would also be a pretty cool addition.

I'm definitely going to play the wii u version because it's pretty much tradition in my family lol.

I hope that Snake rumour is false.

Which version do y'all think you will be playing more?

I have a feeling it will be the 3DS version for me since I can bring it everywhere with me :)

I'm getting both, but I'm going to be playing the Wii U version far more because of the additional control options, HD, more personal multiplayer with my friends/brothers and the game in general just looks beautiful.

Both will be played for hundreds of hours though! I'm really excited, and I really hope that online will be relatively lag free. In Brawl, the lag made it hard to cope when playing my mains (who require fast inputs), such as Marth, Fox and Pit.

Guys did you already noticed the two characters per month pattern? Is just as I predicted some months ago (not the characters but the timing of their announcements).

I'm pretty sure that in February we are getting Diddy Kong and another character (Captain Falco or Ness?), March is definitly Yoshi and another random (R.O.B?), then when Hyrule Warriors releases it would be Ganondorf or Sheik, by the time X comes out or there is a direct in which it is highlited we can have our new character reveal (Shulk if he is in, and this trailer could be the E3 one or one after that and the E3 one could go to a third party character be it Pac-Man or Snake). The rest of them would be returning characters and when there is a direct only focused on Smash we can get the last character reveal which obviously would be a newcomer.

What do you think?

There are ways to balance it though. Make it cap out pretty low, like at 50%, or make there be another way to increase it without getting hurt, such as via a taunt, or by charging his aura sphere to maximum or something.

Will they do that? Dunno.

Even a 50% cap is too high. One of the basic tenants of smash is "not getting hit" which means, a good player who avoids taking damage is at an inherent disadvantage for no reason.

There's an easy way of balancing it that's already been suggested. His aura should increased based on the damage dealt by the player.

ew why did this fucker have to return D: such a lame ass furry pokemon. wheres mewtwo sakurai. But seriously outside of furries and the stupid movie, lucario doesn't deserve to be in smash.

Where's mewtwo sakurai damn it

Posts like these are the worst part of Smash character discussion.
To be fair, Sheik appeared only in OoT. But I don't see them adding Girahim in indeed.
She was planned for TP. That's where the Brawl design came from.

Ha, I actually expected another character this week... probably only one next month, though. Diddy midway through, or maybe a newcomer via a Direct.

Lucario is probably my least favorite Pokemon AND my least favorite Smash character, to the extent that I actively dislike him in both cases. But I don't mind seeing him back, because one by one we're seeing the most likely characters to be cut... not cut. Toon Link is in, Lucario is in... I think only Wolf, Lucas, and Ike are still in the "danger zone." And Snake, who's entirely up to Konami, I imagine.

Wouldn't Lucario being revealed before Diddy prove the leak fake?

I was thinking this also, but we don't know when the leaker got the info, maybe Sakurai woke up last sunday and was like "let me reveal Lucario next week". Or even he knows about the leaked list that seems to be on point and wan'ts to throw it off.

People on NeoGAF really believe that Mewtwo isn't a furry.

As a non-furry, I had half a mind to post some PG-13 Mewtwo pics just to shut them up in the Lucario reveal topic.

Why would Lucas be in the "danger zone". Ike, Wolf, and Snake I can understand though.

At least, we know that we are getting two characters next month for sure. Donkey Kong Country Return 2 release date (Feb 13), and Nintendo Direct. I'm really looking forward for more daily images since this week have been fantastic.

"Semi-clone" (I know not really but in looks), second character of a minor series, only showed up in one game... I've always thought of him as the least likely to go, since the Mother series is so beloved and all. Still near the bottom, though.

Maybe Sakurai is the leaker.

Well I was expecting Lucario back, but not revealed this soon and not revealed before Pokemon Trainer or a possible Mewtwo. Surprised it took this long to reveal a second Pokemon rep though, and I wonder how long it will be before mention is made to MegaLucario, if that form even exists in this game.

I dunno, then you could have a powerful character running around with low percentage. Taking damage seems like a better risk vs. reward.

The thing is, Aura inherently means he'll be bad at the start of every match and every stock -- the match is already not in his favor. He'll always be mediocre because the mechanic is limiting his potential from being a normal character. He could still be unique if the mechanic was reversed, the more Lucario does damage to the opponent the stronger he gets. But instead he has to take damage in order to be good and by the time he has taken enough damage, the match is likely already in the other person's favor.

It's a bad mechanic, inherently flawed and it baffles me why Sakurai brought it back other than out of stubbornness (would explain making the effect stronger).

I'm all for uniqueness but not if it jeopardizes how good a character can be and in Lucario's case it makes him mediocre no matter what move set adjustments you make.

I mentioned this in the Lucario thread, but he's high-tier in Brawl. He's actually a very balanced character in the grand scheme of things, like Zero Suit Samus and Toon Link.

I feel that people asking for Lucario to get cut are just as bad as those wanting Mewtwo to stay cut :/

Both have fanbases and both deserve to be in Smash Bros 4

How do you "take damage" though?

Do you just let the opponent hit you? Do you play sloppy? Taunt? From what i've seen, Lucario main who played like that in competitive Smash did not go out of their way to make use out of aura. At best, it was a nice bonus for Lucario at high %.

And as I responded in the other thread, this is only because Brawl had no combos, and one could argue Lucario should be in mid tier anyway

Nonsense.

I am the ultimate arbiter of the characters and my decree is the only factor by which they are worthy to enter the blessed kingdom of Smash.

The objections of the unwashed masses are empty bellows from the senseless hearts of fools.

That's how I see it, as a bonus. In the end it's still more advantageous to not take damage, but if you do you have a better chance to make a comeback.

But if you could power up by doing damage, you would widen the gap between players. I look at it more as a comeback mechanic.

I already said that that has no relevance to my point.

OK, so Brawl had no combos... so what? Brawl is Brawl. Revven was saying that Lucario was mediocre in Brawl.

And even if he dropped a tier, he'd still be better than 70% of the cast. That's far from being mediocre.

Damn Lucario has gotten a lot more attention than usual veterans. Everyone's tryin' to put him down, I wanted him in Brawl badly back when I was 16 and when he got confirmed it didn't do much for him for some reason. I'm glad Sakurai put him in over Mewtwo though mainly because there's too much Gen Wun repping in Pokémon. Of course Mewtwo could always come back away and if secret characters are still a thing I'd love to see Mewtwo as one.

Yeah and we all know Sakurai loves his "comeback mechanics"....

and Poltergust, I'm going to stop giving you the same responses in two different threads :P

I'm guessing our dear friend Anth0ny loves it :lol

Comeback mechanics? As far as I can remember, Lucario is the only character with such a feature.

Well, there is also the "die too many times and get a free Final Smash even if they are turned off" thing, but that's never seen in tournament play.

Yeah, we really should keep responses to one thread, but my point still stands. I think it's also foolish to think that a character will suck (or be great) when we've seen so little about the game and its mechanics.

But if you could power up by doing damage, you would widen the gap between players.
How? Rewarding good play doesn't widen the gap between players. In fact, it gives Lucario mains an incentive to get better at the game.
True, but I mentioned them just to point out that things have to be added to make characters fit.

Btw my Ness knows PK Tacos
I'm still mad that he doesn't get PK Rockin

PS: You'll never guess what my Ness learns.
