The only time in my marathon of Bleach where I was bored/frustrated was the 100 some odd chapters from when the Captains show up in Hueco Mundo to the final battle between Ichigo and Aizen, other then that I found it pretty enjoyable. And it wasn't like any of those battles were bad, they just were the same battle repeated over and over and over again.

Naruto at one point after the time skip I remember thinking "jebus christ this guy has no idea what he wants to do with this story" and then Naruto had another training arc, at that point I just face palmed so hard.

Again this is manga/story argument here, I'll admit that Bleach's dub anime makes the sometimes bad fights even worse and Shippuden has a whole has way better VA

Yet they still did a better job editing it than 4kids did with One Piece!

Naruto is easy. Cut away from a maiming here, edit out a bit of blood there. Make sure to do a re-record of a swear here and there, a little more steam in the bathhouse or a cut to a still shot.

One Piece meanwhile needed to be edited for tobacco and alcohol references and guns in oh...nearly every early episode of the show.

Shippuden was watchable on XD. It just didn't fit at all with the rest of their lineup.

That's true. One Piece was gonna be super hard for 4Kids to edit later on.

I never had any nostalgia for Naruto, Bleach, or OP as I didn't read/watch any of them until 2012 when a buddy finally convinced me to give OP a chance after hating the dubbed version I saw on TV (yay 4kids). I had also similarly been turned off by Naruto for the same reason. OP blew me away, Naruto build up hype then completely wasted it, and Bleach was all over the place but still consistently entertained me. Heck here are all the series I experienced for the first time after having not seen/read a damn thing about them in that year

One Piece
Naruto
Bleach
Fullmetal Alchemist
Yu Yu Hakusho
Ruruoni Kenshin
Black Cat
Toriko
Monster
Deadman Wonderland
Fairy Tail
Magi
Hunter x Hunter
Berserk

I think it's funny, so many of these series have been classics you guys have discussed/watched/read for years and for me I've only been enjoying them for a bit over a year now

There's actually more realistic violence (i.e. Marines with muskets) in the early part of OP than there are later on.

All the violence from the last episode for example would have been completely kosher as even handheld cannon fire is unrealistic.

I meant later on. Much later on.

One Piece did NOT belong on an American Saturday Morning block, hence why we got the mess we did.

And yeah, later episodes would have been nigh-impossible without some serious Saban style hand waves.

"Say Brook, want to join my crew?" "Sure because.... I just want to."
Not to mention everything from
Sabaody to the end of Marineford
. Hahahahahahahahahaha

Heheh. Exactly. I can't even imagine how'd they handle that.

The problem with OP is that from a distance it looks like a Saturday morning kids cartoon, but content wise it's more of an Adult Swim type show, but it doesn't have the "mature" look of a show like Bleach or Naruto Shippuden

My general opinion, which probably isn't too uncommon, is that I generally enjoyed the Soul Society arc of Bleach. It was a little cheesy, and the writing was far from strong, but things made sense, and there was an appropriate amount of intrigue and a clear objective, focusing on a smaller handful of protagonists. I have enjoyed practically nothing after that. Not even a little. The jump to hueco mundo, the arrancars, the visesards, the city junk. It felt like a bunch of nothing was happening. Too many randomly introduced uninteresting enemies, waaaay too many protagonist jobbers, feels like there was no focus at all. The many battles just didn't matter. Naruto is much more up and down throughout, personally, although I did end up 'dropping' Shipudden because I lost interest. I maintain that the Immortals arc is better than anything in 'Naruto' though. Probably because I don't care about Sasuke at all, and that arc has very little focus on him. The whole GET SASUKE BACK angle never really gelled with me.

One Piece feels awkward to me at times too. Like, the conflict sometimes feels artificial or something, it's hard to explain. Also people yell too much. Anyways I think what it does better than the other two is balance in the cast. The main cast works off of each other much more effectively than the other shows, and I think having them stick together most of the time is actually beneficial to this effect. Each character certainly had their own motivations, traits, and quirks, but at least they all feel relevant and significant, and keeping them mostly present helps.

Exactly this.
The bright colors and cherry personalities make it look okay for the Saturday morning crowd. That was not the case. I'd argue that One Piece has far more mature writing than Naruto does (especially now since it's just so... uggggh)

It's a problem The Wonderful 101 ran into. A lot of people were turned off by the "bright colors and weird looking characters" that they ignored an amazing action game and overall experience.

It's funny what flies in Japan for young boy's entertainment. And in America they won't even say the word kill on certain cartoons.

Haha, yeah that's the ultimate irony.
Even with all the blood and drugs, it's still a kids show.

The differences between cable and network are huge as well. I am astonished with some of the shit Adventure Time gets away with.

Japan has some weird censors as well. Particularly the rule NOT THE FACE, NOT THE FACE!

True. Finn having a wet dream in that one episode was really shocking.

That's a game I play when I re-watch Adventure Time episodes. Spot the adult jokes! There's always so many.

And yeah, face violence is a big no-no. Ever wonder how Luffy got his face scar? If you only watch the anime, you'll never find out.
There's also what happened to Whitebeard, but even with the alterations to the anime, that was still really brutal.

I was hooked on OP by the time we got to the part we're currently at in OP, and then I went from hooked to addicted and absolutely blasted my way though the rest of it. I will say going from OP to Naruto probably made Naruto's flaws far more apparent, especially coming from a show like OP where the cast was so well balanced and developed to Naruto where later on it felt like if you weren't Naruto/Sause you weren't shit. Bleach by contrast does have waaaay too many fucking characters and takes focus off the core ones I care about it still at least gives everyone a moment to shine which I can somewhat respect.

Of course FMA is where it's at though, that series is amazing and rivals OP in terms of how addicted I was, read the whole thing in like 1-2 weeks.

I never knew about the face thing. So is Gaara's marking origin like a big no-no in Japan?

i just figured they didn't show Luffy's scar because that was kind of a gruesome thing to watch a kid do.

later One Piece spoilers
Whitebeard i just figured that was too extreme for a show that's being shown to kids

I wonder if my tolerance of Bleach comes from the fact I marathoned it as opposed to reading/watching it weekly. I imagine had I gone at a much slower pace over the course of 2-3 years I'd have gone crazy and begun to be bitter the way a lot of people are.

Oh, I just remembered!
There's a recent One Piece TV special that re-animated Chapter 1, and it does show the scene where Luffy gets his scar. Sort of.

By the way I'm not actually upset at the hinting. But yes there's obviously some history/information surrounding this Water Seven arc that hasn't made itself fully clear yet.

Honestly I haven't seen anyone really hint at anything major outside of maybe who the 8th straw hat is which at this point it's almost impossible not to see that character when most OP art depicts them as a crew member.

Most people already spelled it out but they don't like to televise facial mutilation so most of it winds up being ludicrously censored (see JoJo). Even important character moments like Garra's tattoo and Luffy's scar either get ignored or shown in a roundabout way when the manga shows the more graphic picture.

Aww hell it's tomorrow already. Might as well watch another episode of Naruto.

EDIT: If this thread gets to the next page by the time I come back from getting a drink and shutting down everything else before going to bed I'll do the recap tonight, if not late Monday.

see, to me that seems understandable though. facial mutilation seems more intense for some reason. is that really a NO FACE rule so much as that type of stuff running too far into the territory of what's considered unacceptable from a violence standpoint?

yall are gonna be banned someday
