I've been trying to help but Grok has been a bit of a bitch as of late:

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is showrunner. She would never allow a woman playing Lara Croft to "appeal to the male gaze," or in other words to be more attractive than her.

Well, here she is:

Looks better than I had expected, at least the costume is on point even if its kinda silly in live action. Those lower holster straps gonna CHAFE and what exactly is the chest harness for, a tiny backpack?

Wouldn't surprise me if she walks out like that, says "This is totally ridiculous", and then goes back inside and comes out in a mu-mu.

Interesting............since this was her at the Indiana Jones film premier.

I find her oddly attractive. Must be her vaguely 40's era looks.

I don't have a lot of confidence in her interpretation of Lara Croft. I think she CAN be witty, but she needs to focus on a sharp, cunning character who is raiding tombs and not a lot of social commentary or gender politics, both of which I fear she will wallow in to the total sabotage of the project. The co-showrunner, Chad Hodge, has been around for decades but is gay, so unlikely to serve as a counter-balance to PWB in that respect. I'm not really familiar with any of his work though, so maybe not.

Ultimately it's up to amazon which is a total roll of the dice. While they rarely seem to have anything outright "anti-woke" (unlike Paramount, which has all that Sheridan stuff) they do have stuff that only gives lip service to woke, like Reacher, Fallout, and Terminal List. They can also be pretty salacious like The Boys, so tonally this show could go a lot of ways.

The real question is "who is this for?" Teen girls? If they think legions of gamer guys will tune in just for the name, only to be mocked and talked down to, well, that was a BIG miscalculation. If they are going the route of a solid action-adventure show with diverse villains, heroic characters that can avoid the girlboss tropes (having Lara walk into a seedy bar and immediately get sexually harassed by the only 3 white guys in the place and she proceeds to beat them up in turn....85% chance this happens in the premier episode :P and most importantly, an interesting PUZZLE TO SOLVE as the plot, it may still work.

Come on guys, if Lara Croft was a real person, there is no way she could have game size tig bitties and jump/flip around, dead hang for hours, etc. Her thoracic spine would be bone meal.

Well, certainly they would most likely be implants, as that's what virtually all really athletic women would require to fill out much more than a B cup.

A women that could do all the jumping, climbing, parkour, fighting, and lifting like the games would most likely take after crossfit:

rock climbers:

or American Ninja Warrior types (which is a less demanding hybrid of the above two if anything):

But for me the real key sell here is the upper body and thighs. Those forearms and traps need to be big, the thighs strong. Alas, almost no actresses in Hollywood train these areas and you can't bulk in just a few months. So you end up with a distance runner look with a lot of leaness. TBH getting a volleyball player or even basketball player would be nice, at least there is a physical base. A gymnast would be far too short, I think.

Lotta people decided they were going to hate this long before any pics came out.

They cast a white woman who is literally the exact same height, costume is perfect and it's still not good enough, then people aren't asking for an actual person just some idealized fantasy. There was never going to be anything they could've done to satiate the inner horny 9 year old because the thing they're competing with is a 9 year olds fantasy woman.

If Sophie was around in the 90s all the kids would be using her as an example of what they're no longer doing today. She's a perfectly fine looking woman.

Sorry if you're saying this looks like a guy then I gotta conclude you got some internal things to work out. Giving me this vibe:

Notice you mention "exact same height" of an immutable characteristic, but leave out the other well known features she doesn't exactly have.

If she had a few "Lara Croft" type roles we could use to judge her anticipated performance, then I'd agree with you. She has some 'semblance to the character, but not much else to show her creds. And Waller-Bridge plus amazon with their previous LC show plants some MAJOR red flags. Had they cast a chesty sexpot for Lara then I, at least (presumably the ABSOLUTE TARGET AUDIENCE) would give the show a show for that. But now....well, that first trailer had better be FIRE

This is really just being happy that a thin woman with normal hair and clothes is allowed to be a model.

You're not going to convince the aesthetic-first people to change. The best to hope for is that this is well produced, well directed, and well written so that it changes opinion that way.

My concern here lies with the writing and how they are going to portray the character of Lara Croft. In the video games (Pre-latest trilogy), she is essentially the James Bond of treasure hunters. Classy and respectful, has intrigue, sometimes has cool gadgets (specifically the Legends Lara), goes on high value target missions that sometimes involve the supernatural, and is willing to fight dirty if needed.

The latest trilogy kind of ruined a lot of these aspects but since they are now trying to retcon those all into prequel stories for the upcoming game, I guess it can kind-of work 🤷‍♂️

Now, Angelina Jolie's TR almost nailed this and mostly understood the assignment.

Vikander's TR tried to ground things into a survival story and was faithful to the new trilogy. However, I found it boring because to me the new trilogy doesn't feel quite like Tomb Raider.

What's interesting here so far is that Sophie's TR is going for the classic, PS1-promo image reddish hair look with the green shirt and brown shorts. Therefore, I expect her to act and envelop the James Bond-style person I described above, and not the timid newcomer nor the post-Legends personality.

You're talking about 60 year old farts that have no respect for normal women unless it's some fantasized sexualized bimbo. Dont bother having common sense around here when it comes to women. People saying Angelina Jolie was the best when in fact her TR movies were trash, and that's not coming from me, I mean the Vikander TR, which has extremely small boobs was more praised than Angelina. These people here are a minority. As long as the the show is great, the majority of normal people will praise it.

That being said, this is an Amazon series so theres like 50% chance it ends up being good.

I'm hoping for the best as well, but I strongly suspect this is gonna be one of those shows were everything AROUND the character is awesome. The costumes are on point, the set guys, the effects, all that stuff because those are folks working on merit and they do their homework. But the script.....that's gonna be the breaker here. Does this show WANT to be a fun action adventure with all the thigs you mention or does it want to "strike at the patriarchy, apologize for the colonialism, inspire young girls that THEY TOO can run around and throw large men through windows"?

TV shows have never looked better, they are truly cinematic in quality, a bit of that CG haze aside. But damned if they haven't become preachy as well, like they are trying to make up for 100 years of sin in just a few seasons. Too much money, not enough talent.

Yea im not speaking to the actual shows quality. That could go any which way, I'm speaking purely on the appearance of Lara in the show

I dont think the height is an immutable characteristic.

If she was 5"5, I wouldn't care that much either.

Same reason I defend Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Hes obviously a completely different build than the source material, but the actual stuff that makes the character sing, he nails and looks good doing it.

You can't change your height. It's immutable. Just like race, sex, etc..

You can do artificial things, sure.

Being white doesn't mean she looks like Lara Croft or has the vibe. She's also not built in the same way.

Honestly though, I don't see the point of this other than for Amazon to bleed dry this IP and every other they can get their hands on.

I'll be in the minority when it comes to the Vikander movie. One of my biggest issues with that movie is that they forgot to have some fun. It is another too-serious movie that felt like a 2010s Sony movie. All it was missing was a blue beam in the sky.

I'm hoping for the best as well, but I strongly suspect this is gonna be one of those shows were everything AROUND the character is awesome. I'm never against positive reinforcement in shows as long as it's written and directed well, and not the equivalent of an old G.I. Joe or Captain Planet near-4th wall breaking PSA ad.

For me that's the actual issue, treating the audience like children. Avatar: TLA should not be running laps around live action shows, but sometimes it happens 🤷‍♂️

So was the modern trilogy, which a lot of folks liked, less Shadows because they turned her into a mass murdering psycopath, but the first two were pretty great.
As stated above I wasn't the biggest fan of how they went about that either. I was kind of okay with the first one since they treated it as an origin story, but when they kept going with the same level of seriousness in the sequels, I quickly realized it was something I wasn't the biggest fan of for her character.

Because it adapted the survivor era of games, it was pretty much in-line with those.
Exactly which made the movie amplify the issue with those games.
