Dragons Dogma 2 worth $30?...or should I just skip it? (PS5)

I'm finishing up Astro Bot and am looking for something new to play.
I see Dragons Dogma 2 just went on sale on PSN for $30.

I remember being hyped for it but I ended up skipping it because of the poor performance on console, which seems to be a bit better now.
Despite the strong reviews and positive initial reaction, over the last year the word of mouth about the game around here seems to be absolutely terrible with many people calling it not only worse than the first game (which I always thought was a fun but very flawed game) but just straight up bad in general. It also has a pretty low user score on metacritic and Steam.

So, Is it worth a play through?
For those that say it's worse than the original, what makes it worse?

I enjoyed the combat in the original but overall found the world and quests a bit bland and I wasn't a fan o the character progression system (like having to play as other classes to get better stats for the class I actually wanted to play as). The story was also terrible but at least it mostly stayed out of the way.

If you enjoyed the original Id play this one for $30, assuming the performance got fixed on consoles.

Personally, it had pretty much the exact same pros and cons as the original but lacked any end game type content you got with Dark arisen.

What I liked:
- Combat is fun. It was just fun to fight things. But combat is very reminiscent of the original, if you liked it there you'll probably like it here.
- Very pretty game, technically and art direction. Some of the armor and weapons in this game are just badass. Playing as a melee class, it had some really cool looking armor sets to rock.
- Character creator was badass. My guy looked like Brad Pitt on steroids and my pawn looked like Sydney Sweeney
- World was fun to explore, stumbled into some challenging caves and shit

What didn't like:
- Story, quests, npcs etc are still super light. Definitely not a narrative banger.
- Difficulty started out good, it was challenging but not frustrating. But once you start to get towards the mid game you get really OP. Second half of the game was zero challenge.
- Enemy variety is lacking
- No really much replayability

I dunno, if you liked the first one I think you'd be safe to spend $30 bucks on this, it can be fun but wont blow you away compared to the first.

Yeah not much changed here haha.

For 30$? Maybe, depending on what you want.

If you want a well developed story that makes sense, memorable characters, cool and unique dungeons and a nice challenge, look elsewhere.

If you want to lose yourself in a big open world full of corners to explore while fighting enemies in a beat'em'up style, with lots of skills to use and big monsters that engage you in a Monster Hunter kind of way then yeah, go for it.

Strongest points of the game are the combat and exploration. Some of the music is very good too (not near as good as the original tho) and the visuals can sometimes be very, very pretty. It also has something I haven't seen in many games, which is the npcs and enemies reacting to attacks and physical contact in quite a believable way.

So yeah, combat 9/10, nice exploration. Everything else? Terribly undercooked, Capcom did it again and released a half baked product. But hey, a half baked product for half the price might do it for you.

Physical version maybe and I say maybe because I'd suggest getting other superior games that can be purchased for the same price or lower.

What would you recommend?

DD2 has a lot of flaws, but the gameplay (combat + exploration) is imo the best in the current and past gen. Only games I put above it when it comes to that are the previous games, DD: Dark Arisen and DD Online.

I'd say skip.

The first game is miles better and the second game has some horrendously poor design choices that are blatantly done due to their fetish for monetisation.

GHG GHG man I don't know what are you doing with your posts, but they are very hard to read in dark mode. :lollipop_pensive:

The Witcher 3
Elden Ring
Gow/R
Decent games but I'd say Dragon's Dogma offers a completely different experience from any of those. Specially TW3, that game is the polar opposite from DD.

Just using whatever the standard reply settings are.

I say it offers a bit of all 3 but all 3 are far superior IMO.

Wonder if it's just me lol.

Yeah maybe! Elden Ring for sure.

At least they are complete games. I had a lot of fun with DD2 but by the end I was feeling like I payed 60 bucks for half a game.

i just played spider-man 2, & then replayed spider-man & had a lot more fun doing that. I'd say the same holds true with the 2 dragon's dogma games...

It's pretty decent fun. I'm sure they've patched it a ton since I played. I'd say it's def worth $25-$30. Takes a bit to get into, but after 5-6 hours you're def IN

it was big disappointment to me. it just didn't suck me in (or off :messenger_face_screaming: ) like the first one did..

Curious about this one as well but passed on release due to poor performance issues.

I have two options 7900xtx 7800x3d

Or

PS5 Pro

Have the performance issues been resolved?

CLW CLW I'd say go PC even if just for the mods alone. One of my main gripes with the game is how easy it becomes after a while and that's an easy fix if you are on PC, since there's mod to tune the difficulty to your liking.

Dunno about performance being 100% fixed but they sure improved it. Still, I was able to play the game with no issue (60+ fps) with a 5800X + 4070 Super.

I personally really liked it BUT with a big caveat. They have this retarded limitation on fast travel in the original game. I think you have to buy a stone or some such item (ferrystones?) from vendors for each fast travel. They are very expensive and limited. I was on PC so simply modded them in for infinite use. If I had to utilize fast travel as originally intended, I would've dropped the game very fast. Seems unnecessarily frustrating game design.

What happened with this game?

I remember it reviewed fairly well (including by some youtube reviewers that I normally trust - FightinCowboy, etc) and it got decent player word of mouth at release but now it seems like everyone has a negative opinion of the game.

Is it really that bad or just not different enough from the first game?

Reviews on steam still mixed. I gave them a year, removed it from my wishlist recently.
I thought I did the same thing and it still seems to be on my wishlist. Maybe I am holding out for it being on sale for $10 or less. That may be a while. I am surprised it is still mixed on Steam. Not a good look.

I thought he was trying to be edgey. I've seen that for days from GHG.

The game is prob worth it on console but it shines on PC with mods. Levitate anywhere, no slipping on cliff edges, custom difficulty, and countless other mods. It's great.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
Honestly...I'm inclined to just pass on it based on your comments. Though I'll still think about it until I'm done with Astrobot.

Thx for the more detailed feedback.
Based on this I think I'll pass for now.

I wanted a DD2 for a long time, but it was because I believed in the potential of a game that built on the good parts of DD1 while improving upon the many issues.

Instead it sounds like it's basically just more of the same and they learned nothing and simply doubled down on all the issues of the first one.

I would skip and play the original. The second game looks good, combat is fine but its like they forgot to complete the game. I can't really describe it better than that. Very empty experience overall.
