Movies You’ve Watched Lately | OT | - 2025

5/10.
It was almost good but IMO it really fumbled the ending.
Through the entire movie there's this buildup of tension and a sense that not everything is as it seems, but then it ends in a way that felt really rushed and with little to no payoff.

Mission Impossible: Final reckoning - Ving Rames get 3rd billing in this movie and that is cool. Movie is fun, it is long but almost doesn't feel long. Lots of callbacks and using a character from the first film was brilliant. A fun ride. 4/5

Karate Kid Legends

Cobra Kai Karate GIF by Regal

Starting watching cobra Kai during the pandemic, so far this year with the last season of that and now karate kid legends it's been a treat especially being an mma fan.

The formula feels very old but keeps it cool (shitty situation, family member died and motivates fighter, enters tournament etc.) if you want a basic but good karate fighting movie this is it.

Third Person

Romantic drama films aren't usually my cup of tea, but this film left me quite intrigued, if slightly puzzled. I wondered all the film through what was going on, and it only dawned on me when the credits were already rolling. It follows three different stories, and jumps between them often. It's quite difficult to watch at first, but once I got used to it, everything went smoothly, and I could follow each story with ease. At first I thought it would have been better if they followed each story separately, but in the big picture, this was the only way to show the whole story. I'm still quite fascinated about this, I'll give the commentary track a listen soon, maybe it'll open some new points of view.

Final Destination: Bloodlines:
Fun time. Great kills. My daughter and I had a really enjoyed it.
The acting is pretty bad across the board and the main character is utterly void of personality. She looks like a 40-year-old 20-year-old.
But who gives a shit once they start getting picked off.

The Amatuer
I was actively forgetting this movie as I watched it.
It has a pretty stacked cast considering how average it is.
Not terrible, but not anything you're going to remember.

Big Trouble In Little China (1986)

This is a beloved classic. I went in expecting just a simple popcorn flick. And while I got that, I guess I just don't get the appeal. The effects were truly excellent (easy to see how Carpenter would also direct the Thing) but the action was AWFUL and I feel like the characters could have been cut in half because I didn't care about most of them.

Oh well. I will add it to Big Lebowski as great classic movies that I don't personally like.

The Fast & The Furious

The original, the one that started it all. Before they saved the world, they stole DVD players!

The movie is almost as meme-able as Revenge Of The Sith and full of cheesy quotes.

Anyone who was into cars & the modification scene at the turn of the century will probably hold this movie in their heart. Never granny shift, always double-clutch!

But don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that he just came into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS, and a Motec system exhaust.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Never seen Ted, which was seemingly some sort of hit 15 years ago. Or something like that. This film was advertised as being made by same people, although this time it's a western. Some jokes work, but there are equally as many jokes that don't. I can't say I loved it, but can't say I hated it either. Maybe I'll give a rewatch in 10 years, but that is no way a given. Pretty forgettable film, to be honest.

Speak No Evil: I don't know why I waited so long to see this. It looked cheesy and hokey. But it was good. It was extremely unnerving the whole movie. Shit didn't hit the fan until like 40 minutes left in the movie. But I think the build up is actually where the true tension lies. Incredibly uncomfortable all movie. Solid movie. Heard the foreign version is better. May watch it.

Sinners: liked it. Don't think it was as good as the reviews I'm seeing where people say it's best movie of the year, but I liked it. Took a little while to get going. Kinda like Speak No Evil, except this didn't have tension throughout the movie. Shit didn't even hit the fan in this until like an hour left. Enjoyed it though.

How to train your Dragon 2025 - My son wanted to go and he wanted to go where the seats shake. We did DBOX at $20 a ticket. It was a fun movie, been a while since I saw the animated one. The flying is pretty fun in DBOX. The movie is fine. My son enjoyed it.

Juliet and Romeo - This looks like it was made for the CW. I didn't know it was a musical and I wish I had a time machine to show this to Mr Shakespear so he could just stop writing all together. 1/5

Ok how have I never seen this thread before?

I have my calendar on my phone setup with all the movies I watch at home each year so I can stay on schedule....usually Thursday and Sunday nights with some Tuesdays. I only take edibles on movie nights.

To catch up I will list the movies I've watched from June 1 through this coming weekend and then I will update my list each week. I watch specific movies at specific times of the year. So here's the beginning of Summer movie season for me:

Star Wars A New Hope
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Batman Begins
Total Recall (1990)
The Beach
Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan
Terminator 2
Man of Steel

Chain of Command (94) - This movie is awful and every scene is over acted. Every character is poorly written. This movie hopefully ended careers. 1/5

Sinners - Very disappointing. I tried to lower expectations from the rave reviews, but even then.

A standout scene was when Preacherboy plays the blues in the car, and the dramatic film score swells underneath it and then joins in. There are countless movie scenes where the score plays over a visual montage, but it's not often you hear a film score emphasizing diegetic music like that. A cool idea well done.

Strangely, another similar scene didn't do it for me. The music ghosts from across time and space all vibing together at the juke club It was like they took the subtlety of the "power of music" of the car blues scene and MCU'd it.

Saw the new Mission Impossible movie. It was ok. Would never watch it again. Was long too. I didn't see the last one. But that's ok, I can get into a movie even if I know nothing about any past movies that relate.

The plot is overly complicated with some gadget with missing pieces and to deactivate it the crew has to do this and that.

There's a big segment in the middle with Cruise in a spooky sub searching for a piece which I thought was the best part of the movie. I dont know how much of the internal sub parts were CGI or legit real set pieces. But if it was all real, it was really good. The fight and action scenes are generally good.

The movie has an ultra gay way of group chats. If there's 3-4 people talking to one another, they do it in this weird way where each person gets in their say with one sentence and then it moves to another person, then moves to another person, then another like it's a kids game of telephone. I dont know if other MI films do that, but I've never seen a movie do that before. It happens throughout the movie. You'll notice it when you see it.

If you like Tom Cruise doing his obligatory sprints, you'll give the movie big props. He has I think 3 giant marathon sprints where it seems he can run across town in 3 minutes at full speed.

Another big bonus. The brunette co-star is hot as hell. Kind of has a faint resemblance to a young Holly Marie Combs. But with way better teeth and smile. I typically go for blondes over brunettes. But this brunette is better than the blonde.

6/10 tops. Saw it in a nice theatre with a good screen and cozy seats. Zero other patrons were annoying or made noise. So it was a good viewing experience. If I watched it at home or it was an avg movie watching night where there's some annoyances it would had been 5 or 5.5. I cant remember the last time I had such a nice viewing at a theatre despite there still being decent number of people in there.

Started watching k-pop demon hunters. Seems like it could be a reasonable film but, good god, the music is like audible syphilis so I only got about 15 minutes in before I turned it off.

A Walk Among the Tombstones

This time Liam Neeson becomes an ex-police officer turned private eye trying to catch kidnappers. Of course he has his personal problems and skeletons in his closet. Not much else to say about this, the detective story features some good, some wooden acting and quite basic storyline. Passable film, nothing more.

The Phonetician Scheme. I enjoyed it. Not his best movie but all the movies are interesting and the camera work is always a treat. 4/5

I enjoyed it too, it was cool to see Anderson lean more into the surreal with the heaven scenes.

Technically not a movie per se, but close enough.

Caught on a sports channel an ESPN episode of 30 in 30. Lakers vs Celtics rivalry. It's a 3 part series googling it. I saw episode 2 which was the 80s teams. Awesome show if you like NBA.

I'll find episodes 1 and 3 another time.

Oppenheimer is undoubtedly a masterpiece, I really enjoyed it. Not only does it show the process of making the nuclear bomb, but also all the politics involved, before, during and after the bomb was made. And the acting by Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. was impeccable.

Watched Hardcore Henry for the first time last night

I'd love to watch this in 3d VR

Obviously it's a dumb film, based all around d the 1st person PoV, but still enjoyed my time watching it. Its basically a video game

7/10

I love that series. If you run into any issues finding parts 1 and 3 let me know and I can help you out.

Watched Tommy Boy last night. Great fun. Not seen it in years. Chris Farley was amazing. Just finished watching The Lost Boys. One of my favourite films.

The Lodge

So close to being great, very solid first half, but it gets less and less believable from there.
Can't really say much more than that without spoiling the whole thing, worth a watch, but a bit disappointing considering they had all the cards to win this.
6/10

Inside Man

A thinking mans heist movie, if there is ever such a term. Similar to Dog Day Afternoon, albeit in a contemporary setting. Cast with Denzel, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster is great. Direction by Spike Lee is also very good. Very entertaining. Recommended.

11+/10 because it's just PERFECT, as magical as it always has been since the 80s but looking INCREDIBLE.

Enough said. 🧐

First movie I've ever seen in the cinema with my parents. That was 39 or 40 years ago. Long ago.

Heretic.

Solid cast and performances, but the writing lost its way somewhere around the halfway mark.

Also I can't stop seeing an Oompa Loompa when looking at Hugh Grant now…

Fun fact: the child-like empress was my first celebrity crush back when I was about 6 or so years old. I thought she was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen and would have stood raging against the nothing to protect her without hesitating. ❤️

Can anyone recommend a 'feel-good' film or two? Wanting something different to all the horror I've been watching lately.
Maybe you saw these already, but these are among my fav comedy flicks (not Eraser).

Eraser. There's better Arnie action movies, but this one has hot Vanessa Williams in it and theres comedy bits with his mafia buddy.

Maverick. Comedy flick. Actually based on an old black and white TV show, but you dont need to know anything about that.

White Chicks. Hilarious from beginning to end.

Ferris. Typical 80s teen comedy movie.

Other comedy movies which are fun are Sixteen Candles, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde.

Recently watched Ford vs Ferrari and The Last Samurai. I had seen last samurai before, but it had been years. Both movies are great.

Going to see the F1 movie this weekend.

This came to mind and I haven't seen it in years. Good stuff

Stranger Than Fiction
Can't Hardly Wait

Thanks all.

I've added them all to my list. I'm going to start with White Chicks and then Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Two films I've always wanted to watch but never got around to seeing. I watched Eraser a month or two ago and thought it was solid.

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

In anticipation of the reboot, I decided to watch the original film. It's still fun today, and most of the jokes feel timeless. Leslie Nielsen, of course, does his definitive role as Frank Drebin, a hilariously fun detective, who is totally oblivious to every goof he does, and is always serious, even when he shouldn't be. One of the all-time gems, that is still great to watch, even if it's clearly a product of it's time.

Watched Ballerina couple of days ago at the theatre. Solid movie, didn't get bored at all.

Planning to go watch 28 Days Laters or F1 today. Depends on who got the better timing
