I dont even think RTGI can fix this game. Their underlying lighting model is extremely dated even by baked lighting standards. RTGI will simply make it accurate with proper AO and shadows, but the rest? Last gen draw distance, last gen rocks, last gen trees and foliage? No amount of RT will save it. Maybe path tracing like it did for indy, but path tracing didnt save Doom for me even though it does look better in motion now. But baked lighting does not necessarily have to look bad. Alan Wake 2, Callisto, FF16, HFW, and Ratchet all use baked lighting and look better.
Whatever shaders they are using for snow and those snowy mountains are perfect. The look great when sunlight is bouncing off of them. They look great at dusk and dawn when there is not much light. If the rest of the game had those shaders for the ground, it wouldve looked way better without needing RTGI. The ground level detail in the Unreal Engine Rebirth trailer still looks great and it didnt use any ray tracing. Just a realtime GI model.
Went back to HFW a couple of days ago to do a quick comparison, and while the draw distance is exceptionally limited, and the game has aged somewhat, it routinely produced striking visuals as I made my way through the map. DS2 just feels underwhelming af.
