Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Announced (HD-2D Remake) - Releasing Feb 5th, 2026

The change of artsyle, and the changes in the characters' appearance as a result, is displeasing, but I'm definitely more interested in this now that it has been revealed to be an actual remake instead of a pointless HD 3DS remaster. Sigh:lollipop_sad_relieved:, it would seem that DQXII is most probably a 2027 title.

About a 7-8, too long. Too many random battles. Difficulty ramps up too high early in the game.

Interesting, did it have random battles? Possible they could fix that if the battles are visible now, like it appeared in the trailer. If the pacing is the main thing and battles, I imagine there's a good chance this reimaging could fair better, maybe an 8-9 for people who see it as a 7-8?

I personally find the artwork less charming than WoFF, it has a sort of awkward/ugly chibi look, but if the story and gameplay is good, I may give it a try.

I'd just skip the 3DS version now. Judging from the trailer, you'll be getting a game with a better art style and expanded story telling in this version. I'm also expecting improvements to the job system and how leveling up jobs works.
yeah, I guess so. It still wasn't even in the first three of my backlog, I guess at this point it goes into the "collection".

This looks lovely. The characters look even better than if they were made with DQ8's cel-shading.

But… it's still DQ, and the longest one at that. So, a seemingly neverending grindfest. And if it follows the current trend of JRPG remakes, it may take 100 hours just to barely beat it.

Lots of talk of how long / unwieldly this game is, but from the sounds of it they're making a lot of changes to address that. Really trying to live up the 'Reimagined'.

The story has also been significantly streamlined. Told through a series of vignettes with an overarching narrative, it's been reworked to be pacier and more accessible to players - while still maintaining the narrative depth the game is known for.

Enemies are visible on the field - touch one, and you'll start a battle… unless it's weaker than you. If that's the case, pre-emptively strike it and you'll defeat it there and then, which keeps the adventure moving at a brisk pace.

A brand new feature of this game is the ability to Moonlight – essentially, each member of the team can now equip up to two Vocations!

the Monster Master vocation (new for this version of the game), features the 'Positive Reinforcement' perk, which summons powerful monsters to attack your foes!

As well as automatically defeating weaker foes, you can also set tactics for your protagonist and allies, so they battle to a particular strategy without the need for direct command. You can also speed up fights to make them fly by!

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined not only "reimagines" the visual and emotional portrayal of its characters, but also makes the game's story significantly more approachable and accessible.

So, whether you enjoyed DRAGON QUEST VII on its original release, struggled to collect all the tablets, or are just experiencing the DRAGON QUEST series for the first time, we believe this game will provide a satisfying experience.

To be fair, a lot of that was addressed in the 3DS release. It was still a long game, but nowhere near as long as the original PlayStation release.

I'm not sure how far the re-imagining will go but would it be possible to make Maribel a mute and save us from one of the most detestable characters in RPG history?

That game is overwhelming.

The PS1 version, you're 10 hours into the game and you think you're halfway through... And then you realize it's just the tutorial 😥
Dude yes, the PS1 game is a nightmare. I hear the 3DS version is cleaned up but the game was so slow on PS1. It took like 20 hours to unlock the class system, and if you missed a hidden key item you couldn't progress the story until you found it. Hours wasted just walking around breaking pots.

It genuinely pisses me off we got this instead of Chrono Trigger.

Does SE pull off Denuvo after a year like SEGA does sometimes?
Yeah, they just recently removed it from the Dragon Quest III remake. Usually they keep it on there for six months.

I remember in the ancient days of the early 2000s how I was told turn based is so dead and done and here we are, turn based still as awesome as ever...can't wait to revisit DQ7 one of my all time favorites, this looks incredible

I played through this game on the 3DS, and out of all DQ games to remake a second time...not the one I would hope for. I love the other DQ games I played. XI is one of the best jrpgs ever imo, and DQ5 is one of my favorites also...but 7...I was so god damn bored, I just wanted it to end, and it refused to for so long.

Looks great to me as a lower budget game than DQXI but not as low as HD-2D stuff. I like the character style, it's distinct and recognisable as the original designs reimagined and not as in your face Dragon Ball as later games. The animation is :messenger_fire:

One of the coolest remakes that I can remember.
Looks absolutely heartwarming. Comfort food in videogame form.
I only played a fraction of it on PS1 but I loved every minute of it.

With all these reveals,
I went from being super down on modern gaming - to now having too much to look forward to.

Ok, so maybe that was my problem. I became pretty bored with the game on 3DS and it felt like a slog.

I was wondering if the game was ever gonna pick up because it DID feel like I was halfway through it, but maybe that's because I didn't ever get into the meat of it.

I'll have to load my game back up to tell y'all where I left off to see if that's the case.

If it's not, maybe this one just isn't for me.

Really excited for this. They should remake IX with this approach.

Should I play DQ8 now on 3ds or should I wait for a possible newer remake?

I'd wait. The 3DS port of DQ8 isn't good. If you can play the PS2 version, then great - absolutely play that. It's a phenomenal game, and while it's been a while since I last played it, I'm confident that it's still a fantastic experience. The 3DS version compromised the graphics and music massively, and both of those are a big part of the game's charm. I'd rather just not play the game than bother with the 3DS version, frankly.
