Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala steps down

Someone has to pay for the Firebreak mega bomba.
Seriously gaas titles shouldn't even be greenlit if you can't financially sustain the possibility of a complete failure.
The Max Payne remake might save them.

When it comes to GAAS, for some reason there's very much an "all or nothing" mentality when it comes to publishers/studios in terms of how they approach it from an accounting perspective.

The allure of potentially making Fortnite money means all logic and reason goes out the window.

Non of there titles do well, so no wonder he got axed.

No clue where the future of this studio is to be honest, i think after max payne they are done for.

Alan Wake 2 was almost set up to fail...

=> Epic games store exclusive
=> Digital only launch
=> Sweet Baby Inc. collaboration and all their bullshit - like race swapping Saga Anderson and pushing split protagonists like they did with Spider-Man 2.
=> Alan Wake only playable for 50% of the time in his own sequel

Then there was Firebreak... this actually caused Remedy to issue a profit warning - they expect their operating profit for 2025 to be negative and below 2024 levels.

CrossfireX... what the fuck was that all about???

Why Remedy don't make a survival horror game. Or something more mainstream I don't know. Its clear that they need to release something that is actually profitable. With that being said, I adore Max Payne 1 & 2. I also have a soft spot for Quantum Break.
I hope they can course correct now. Nice summary though.

Alan Woke 2 is hugely overrated, and it suffered multiple performance issues at launch... pretty much like every Remedy release

This post was far more unreasonable and illogical than the decision makers at Remedy. Let's review.

1. FBC Firebreak wasn't GAAS. Remedy is on record saying they didn't make a Live Service game here.

2. Remedy is around 400 large. They devoted less than 100 to FBC Firebreak. That's neither "all" or "nothing". They took a measured gamble. I'll let you consider why they felt the studio needed to take a measured gamble.

3. Nobody at Remedy thought FBC Firebreak had a realistic chance to make Fortnite money.

Try assuming the intelligence of successful people who have spent their entire professional lives making videogames. They may know a thing or two more than people who simply play them.

Maybe if they didn't make it Epic Store exclusive it would have been a bit better for them? It's not like there is no other PC platform that has 90% of the market....

Wait What Wtf GIF

Yeah but if you dont expect anyone to buy it then getting a guaranteed exclusivity cheque is the way to go, they knew.

FBC Firebreak has 13 people now. At night when people get home, it'll jump to 30-40. There's probably more people in the world playing a retro game on their archaic Commodore 64 which barely works.

Alan wake 2 epic store exclusivity deal was one of the most moronic deal in recent times. I don't care if its epic money that made it all possible to begin with, even with that they barely broke even and now its stuck on a storefront that doesn't give a shit to release it on steam down the line to pump money up.
Problem is, everyone (including Remedy) knows their games sell like junk. So they always need some kind of partnership deal to float the boat. Googling it Tencent has a 14% stake in the company and loaned them $15M. They do have a clever business strategy though because you'll notice most of their splashy games are visual showpieces. So it teases a big corporate partner to do a deal. Nobody is going to partner with them with FBC and look how that turned out.

So they'll take the Epic deal. Reminds of some survey I faintly remember where people were quizzed do you want a small amount of XXX dollars now? Or way more money, but split out annually? Most people wanted the lump now. Remedy same choice.

Exactly. I really wish Remedy would focus on putting themselves in a situation where they don't have to deals like this anymore. Their games are unique and need to be everywhere to maximize the amount of users they can reach.

Firebreak something (can't remember) and what other game? Control was good, but other than that, they released nothing else right?
Anal wake 2.

Sam lake death stranding sniffing fart moment.

Control has been their best game since forever, yes.

Agreed.

A lot of things made sense when I realized this happened(imho) and of course there is no way to prove it....but for people who had deductive reasoning it is hard to pretend it didn't obviously happen.

Worst part about Alan Wake 2 for me was the ending in Saga's mind palace which was clearly rushed and then the small section in town. The game had a lot of potential especially early on but it needed a remix badly. FBC Firebreak was obviously some desperate person's last hope as it was clear to everyone it was a flop money waster way before it launched. I was a huge Remedy fan, it's a shame.

Never got Alan Wake 2 because of this

hope new CEO has a better visiĂłn about how to empower a Main character without being racist.

I know the CEO does not develop the Game directly but has control over they team that does it.

Alan Wake 2 bombed and that multiplayer game might as well have been them recreating the scene with Joker burning the pile of money in The Dark Knight.
Someone had to be held accountable for that, and if anything it's good that it's the CEO.

Alan Wake 2 reminds me so much of Returnal. A load of fans exist, but a load of sales are missing.

I like all their games even though they are pretentious. Surprised they never remastered Quantum Break for next gen. Kind of forgotten at this point. It's basically all riding on Control 2 at this point.

I can't even begin to imagine why they thought the multiplayer Control spin off was a good idea, a cool idea in theory, save for anyone could have told there'd be no audience for it.

The first game's biggest issue was trying to imitate GaaS shit too, with "daily challenges" and other annoying bloat, nobody who cares about Remedy's games wants that kind of shit.

They werent going for Remedy fans. They were going for the shooter crowd.
