Highguard Studio Wildlight Seems to Be Closing Its Doors

It was to be expected, but it seems that the studio behind the controversial and short-lived shooter Highguard is heading down the same path and shutting down. Or at least, that is what can be inferred, as it was recently reported that the developer's official pages are being removed from the internet.

Specifically, the studio's LinkedIn page was abruptly removed in the last few days, and its official website has also been taken down, now greeting visitors with a "404 Page Not Found" message.

This activity follows mass layoffs at the developer last month. Triggered by the rocky launch of their debut game, the cuts left behind only a skeleton crew in the hopes of keeping the title alive. But this attempt wouldn't last long, as Highguard's servers would end up officially shutting down on March 12, a mere 45 days after its release. While the game briefly reached nearly 100,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch, it lost roughly 90% of its player base within the first week.

Reports indicate that this severe drop-off led Tencent, the game's reported primary financial backer, to withdraw its funding. Without the necessary revenue to sustain a live-service title, the studio was forced into downsizing its workforce, leaving it with just a core team for the game's final days.

While the potential closure of the developer might not come as a surprise to those who have been following Highguard's reception, we previously lacked confirmation on the final fate of the studio. Now, it seems more likely than not that the team is preparing for its sunset. In a recent statement from Chad Grenier, co-founder and studio head of Wildlight Entertainment, it was suggested that there is no remaining future for Wildlight, as he seemed ready to move on to other projects. He stated:

While this outcome isn't the one we hoped for, I leave this experience with a tremendous number of lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my career. And despite everything, I'm incredibly proud of the team and what we built together.
Further supporting this is Grenier's own LinkedIn profile, which now indicates that his work at the studio ended this very month. This serves as yet another clear sign that Wildlight Entertainment has likely reached the end of its journey, though official confirmation is still pending.

Play(and make) stoopid GaaS games- win stoopid GaaS prices which in case of failed project always ends with massive layoffs or/and studio clousure.
Bungie gonna be next, and after that guerilla or fairgame$ dev too :P

Look at those fairgame$ devteam heaven studios site:
Started in 2021 and still 0 results in 2026, dunno how many ppl are even employed there but u can tell its a bomb that needs to be detonated, the sooner the better ^^

Didn't they fire most of the team already?
Besides no one will give them money so they can spend 4 years working on some new game and present it as "from the creators of Highguard"

I do feel for them, don't seem like a bad bunch at all. But they took the high risk gamble that their gaas game would make it in that cutthroat category ...and ended up paying the price for it.

I do lament that the fact that, seeing as they had former Titanfall devs, they didn't go that route - make a cool SP game with some fun MP modes. Ah well, c'est la vie.

Saw it coming and I'm sure many others did too. Another casualty of the never ending GAAS gamble. I do hope this trend eventually dies down. It's so cynical yet potentially lucrative and has resulted in too many studio and job losses.

Another stop on the Jade Raymond tour of doing fuck all and getting (what I assume are) fat checks.
  • Left Ubi to join EA Motive, oversaw the MTX disaster that was Battlefront II
  • Hired to run Google Studios for Stadia, released nothing
  • Started Haven at SIE, released nothing for 5 years, got fired voluntarily departed

Now will the rest of the industry start paying attention or do we have to keep doing this time and time again?
yes. yes, we do. we've got a number of people in the game industry who 'want' to be successful so much that they refuse to acknowledge that it very likely isn't gonna happen. because they just really, really 'want' to be...

Well well, who could've seen that coming, right?

They sold it on "from the creators of Titanfall" but delivered something nowhere near that. If they end up forming a new studio, I hope they actually consider making a Titanfall successor, since EA clearly doesn't care about it anymore.

I imagine it must feel so bitter. One moment they're sitting with their families watching the Game Awards trailer thinking they have next big thing on the scale of Fortnite and the next it's all over.

Another one gone, they'll all flock to the next one and kill that game and studio. These studios are incestuous and thats why this keeps happening.

Dont fall for the "from the creators of (popular game)" nonsense.

Get some real talent, fresh talent, hire someone that isnt part of the group think that was cool in 2020 only. Let the talentless hacks go work at Burger king

If they really thought they are the next fortnite, then it would only be proof how disconnected they were during development with the current gaming landscape and what gamers actually want and it would make this downfall even more sweet.

Anyone who didn't oppose GaaS *and* a hero shooter game concept in several meetings over weeks if not months (you don't decide this in one meeting) is also responsible for this outcome.

Wouldn't be surprised if toxic positivity was at play here again; don't say anything remotely negative and criticise a thing, just endless patting and telling/lying to yourself how awesome this idea and execution is. My sympathy has boundaries. Even as an employee on lower levels you know what you're signing up for.

Just stay away from hero shooters and life service games if you're looking for work. It's that simple. Unless you want it badly for your vita, but then it's a calculated risk.

They'll be back in some form.

All the founders need to do is open another studio and grift their next crap game to whichever deep pocket corporation rolling the dice on gaas for another $100M.

The money is out there. Read up on split gate 2.
