Highguard Shutting Down

The market has spoken. But will the industry listen?

Bugs Bunny No GIF

The VC money will.

Today we're sharing difficult news. We have made the decision to permanently shut down Highguard on March 12.
Since launch, more than 2 million players stepped into Highguard's world. You shared feedback, created content, and many believed in what we were building. For that, we are deeply grateful.
Despite the passion and hard work of our team, we have not been able to build a sustainable player base to support the game long term. Servers will remain online until March 12th. We hope you'll jump in with us one more time to show your support and get those final great matches in while we still can.
The team is excited to release one final game update to enjoy in the remaining life of the game. We'll be adding a new Warden, a new weapon, account level progression, and skill trees! Full patch notes are coming, and we're targeting tonight or tomorrow morning for patch release.
From all of us at Wildlight, thank you for playing, for supporting us, and for being part of Highguard's story.

Bro, that's NO Guard.

God I hope this flops worse than Concord. Guerrilla deciding this is what their next game should be sickens me. Fuck all of these games, until they get it - All of them gotta fail.
Dont you love that Fortnite montage? lol

Also, the three characters on the right have almost the same pose. Guy on the left thinks he's at a rock concert.

The second character from the right with the horns has her arm up in the air. If you glance at it, it looks like a skinny guy with a headband holding a bow.

Use google bigbrain.
Here is Google bigAIbrain summary which matches what I actually see:
"Regarding "incel" in the context of Highguard, there are no credible reports or search results linking the game or its development to that community. One social media post mentioned it in a non-constructive way regarding player numbers, but this is not a factor in the game's official narrative. "

Ever since Concord there has been this weird attempt to merge woke with GaaS but these two things are not the same just because one big GaaS failure was hamstrung by its shitty woke character designs.

Different.

Who is gonna tell him boys?.

The idea of going "woke" in the first place was to capture more demographics, make your audience bigger and make more money. So in a sense, woke and GaaS are related (also funding happened with this idea in mind). So it's not weird at all. It's just that their connection is more nuanced.

So Helldivers 2 is woke, Dustborn isn't? Just because GaaS tries to bring in a big audience and 'woke' is supposed to expand the audience doesn't mean that all GaaS are woke.
If they stripped all the woke elements from Highguard would it have been a huge hit?

Related. Not the same.

And remember. There was drama around HD2 regarding these issues. Proving exactly this:

"doesn't mean that all GaaS are woke"

That you don't need to go full woke in order to be successful, you don't need "Trans flags" in your game to capture the widest audience

Again, it's not only about "stripping woke elements" from games. is that "woke" also applies to the studio composition; it's workforce. Which is also related to the "blaming gamers" for a game faliing and celebrating its demise.

Remember Concord as well. Media never acknowledged the "woke character desing" instead they (like parrots following a script) try to spin it's demise to the fact that it was not F2P....but af course they didn't parrot this with Arc Riders.

So, what I'm saying with this?

That (GaaS + Woke) it's also a representation of an Anti-Gamer/Anti-consumer sentiment/push/agenda from people on the side of corporations and media.

So, was this Concorde 2,3 or 4?

It's crazy how fast these games are getting shut down. You'd think they might be able to go down to a skeleton crew and run less servers or something.

I don't give a shit about the game, GAAS and anything related, but apart from "Generic Overwatch Vibes" and the devs failing at marketing the game properly because they thought they were going to replicate the success of Apex, I don't get the hate for this.

Concord was way worse, the characters were atrocious and they had talked about that game for years as this massive new things to just be a ripoff of guardians of the galaxy with pronouns.

That said, the writing was on the wall and they'd better either postpone the launch or can it altogether. Praying for Marathon, but I hope Bungie has something else in the works

No chance whatsoever it flops as bad or worse than Concord, the franchise, studio, and Hunting genre have enough cachet to guarantee several hundred thousand copies sold minimum. If the game is actually good (entirely possible given the time, money, and talent Sony have pumped into it) it could very well be Sony's first true 1st party GAAS smash hit. The genre is probably the biggest thing going for it. Much less competition and nowhere near as oversaturated as the Hero Shooter Quasi-Moba shit all the catastrophic failures have been.

It's because the anti-woke grifters are unbelievably stupid with limited understanding of the world around them.

DAMN! Beaten!
Nah. The real big bomba is this.

How much does a Guerrilla game cost? About 4-5 years of a full studio + support? This is going to be a hundreds of millions lost and I can't believe they still decided to go on with it after Concord in 2024. And that reveal with the land whale, what are they expecting? The imaginary modern audience customer to show up?

Chad Grenier, one of the devs, shared some info about the game's stats.

2 million players tried the game
Average session duration was 91 minutes and 3.48 matches
Playstation had the biggest player base by 2X, second Xbox, then Steam
US was the largest player base. Second was Japan
92% of players finished the tutorial
3v3 was the most played mode, even after they introduced 5v5

I kinda feel bad for Geoff. People were hating on him and blaming him and all that, and some might say he caused the game to fail with that huge announcement hype and letdown. But, because of him, hundreds of thousands of people at least tried the game. He at least allowed them a chance of succeeding.

This whole Concordian timeline thing though is pretty funny. I am glad that slop love service games are failing.

The game could have been great with more time in the oven as we can see with the multiple updates.

The error was to succumb to the 5 minutes of fame offered by Geoff.

That's a shame but it was hard to break through with generic artistic direction and so much hidden behind updates.

You should not add key features like skill tree behind updates.

The game was not ready to be released but they shall came back with a "Reforged" version that might make it next time because the core concept was really cool.

It's kinda like with GTA and WoW clones. Most tried to ride a wave the original already occupied/ sucked dry or still occupies. MMORPGs seem to be done for now, but no one attempting to feed GTA fans something before the real thing comes along, seems like a missed oppurtunity. Especially since GTA is also in the gaas camp too and not a main game plus major addon type of offline game anymore. Are all afraid that they would be ignored, even if GTA itself is making everyone wait too long and some would try a proper attempt? The greenlight decisions made some 3, 4, 5 years ago feel like done by one shared genius brain cell.
