Now that I'm thinking about it, having a new Hellmouth open somewhere and it attracting Buffy, now a mom with faded Slayer powers, might work. She'll have mixed race kids because they all do nowadays. Will the girl become a slayer herself???? Or will the boy get it and transition (because slayers are always girls) or will they dump that part of the lore (and the entire appeal of the concept?). It's gonna be a rainbow cast though, no question. I just hope they are all thin and pretty at least.
But, like Highlander, the concept is so tied to a specific origin/named character that i think they will have to have a girl named Buffy as the slayer, not just have old Buffy in it.
Plenty of callbacks though, they could have Allison Hannigan back as willow, and she brings whatshisname as a watcher (they are still married, right?). ASH is still working. A little curse or handwaving magic gets you spike and angel back with some aging (maybe they were cured, or an artifact gave them the ability to age). Borneaz is on like his 4th long running series at this point so he is probably VERY expensive but James Marsten (Masters? always get their names confused) should be an easy get. Not seen Charisma Carpenter in a long stretch but I don't think she is that crucial, really.
They need to make a tone break from the OG show though, and go harder in a fixed direction, either more horror (my preference) or all in on the girl drama/comedy. Trying to hit the same balance as the OG show ain't gonna work. They need something darker like the Sabrina or Riverdale shows, though I suppose those were so influenced by Buffy it's a silly comparison. It's gotta stay a teen oriented show, I don't think "adult buffy" really works though if they want a cinemax style erotic horror show I'm down for that
