Great interview to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the best science fiction horror movies ever.

been a while since i watched this but which sound effects need to be fixed?
The film had troubled production, so it was rushed to release and a lot of recycled stock sounds from more than a decade prior were used, for things like explosions, etc, so it did not feel "with the times" if that makes sense. There are two DOOM sounds as an Easter Egg as well I believe.

Having restored scenes so the film made more cohesive sense would be a plus as well. This movie is dying for a director's cut.

One of my guilty pleasures. Saw it in Cinemas 25 years ago (omg!!) in a midnight screening. When I came back home with the bus, the woods beside the road never looked so frightened. Paul’s best movie, that’s for sure.

Horror and space sci-fi mix together so well, shame we don't see more of it. Weird shit coming out of the unknown is hard to do in modern times unless you go to space. Really adds to the isolation, lack of resources, and limited engagement options.

One of my all-time favorite movies!

Anyone know if the Amazon Prime series still happening?

I haven't seen any updates on it since early 2020 so I'm assuming it was quietly cancelled...
I also remember reading an article or tweet somewhere that paul ws anderson wants to remake it with milla jovovitch

The man already annihilated Resident Evil by making all the game characters be cheerleaders for his wife’s insert Mary Sue fan fiction character. Could he just not with Event Horizon? You made a legit great film, don’t fuck it up. And no disrespect to Milla, maybe she’s good in other modern films (though her acting was meh in the RE films), but I don’t trust Anderson writing for her. Unless he toned it down with Monster Hunter, never saw that one.

I like this movie but it's one of those that I never quite got behind the whole "underrated masterpiece" schtick. It's fine. Good even. I saw it in the theater. I'd probably buy the 4k if it went on a deep sale. I'm also perfectly fine with never seeing it again.

The favorite fan theory is that Event Horizon is a prequel to the 40K universe.
It's not but I can certainly see why people like to link the two.

The gif is from this fan made vid...

The script writer admitted to playing a lot of 40K and that it was as inspiration for the film 😊

Astartes is a great fan film, and completely incomprehensible if you don’t know anything about 40K.

No way!
Well I guess that settles that then. The ship design and chaos nod was too much to be more than a coincidence.

OT but are there any videos or articles that explain Warhammer to a complete noob that you can point to? I've seen you bring up Warhammer before. I'm completely oblivious to that universe outside of dabbling in a few of the games. I think I played that gears-like game when it came out. I like a lot of the designs I've seen. The ships look cool. I'm also really impressed at the scale of some of it. Lots of skulls lol.

Super brief:

Warhammer 40k is basically a sandbox universe, spanning the entire galaxy and set 40,000 years into the future. Stories are told in multiple years and locations. The lore is all designed to form a backdrop to the game, and is all about war. It's all a bit grim and dark, and everything is awful all of the time. It's completely over the top, and fucking brilliant. Draws from the same traditions as 2000AD and Judge Dredd. It's very British.

Main faction is The Imperium Of Man - a fascist regime of humanity that worships a god emperor, and has an army of space marines, who are idiotically over powered. But then so are all the alien enemies they face - called Xenos, collectively. Oh, and then there's hell, which is full of daemons - and is called The Warp (where Event Horizon got its inspiration from).

You're right about the scale. It dwarves absolutely every other fantasy or sci-fi universe there is.

I played the game about twenty five years ago, but now all I do is read the books, and play the video games.

This is the main 40k guy on Youtube, and here's his sum up of the whole thing, which will tell you more:

Imagine if, inside outer space, there was another space that made people lose their shit. Like totally drop their bananas and flip their melons.

Man, that IP is so hilariously over the top and non-PC as only the punk 1980s can be. Time to read some good Xenos shit.

horror is my fav genre and yes, this movie is absurdly overrated

I've come to the conclusion that most people who highly praise this movie or even go as far to say it is one of the greatest horror movies ever simply haven't seen it since they were a kid

I saw it in theaters when I was a child and ya, it scared the shit out of me

but I was a stupid kid. I've revisited the film multiple times since then, mostly due to friends wanting to watch it since they thought it was one of the greatest horror films ever.

after each re-view, my friends typically are baffled by how they somehow thought this movie was so good.

the sets and special effects are quite impressive, especially for its time.

everything else is horrible. tonally, it's a complete mess. the movie will start doing a decent job at actually attempting to be scary, then you get some complete nonsense like this scene:

which completes deflates all the horror/scare factor it was working to build up

anyways, movie is NOT a masterpiece. don't believe me, re-watch it.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
This movie is an instructional video of what happens if you don't maintain and upkeep your Gellar Drive.

By the way, the screenwriter is a huge fan of Warhammer 40,000. Well people do say it's an unofficial prequel, they're not entirely off. He actually said that he was inspired by Warhammer 40,000 when he wrote the movie.

When I saw that he was directing her again in monster hunter I immediately knew it was gonna be bad.

No. That's a lie. I knew it was gonna be bad when the set photos showed guns. Anyone who's ever heard of these games knows there's no guns or modern day American soldiers. So dumb.
