after each re-view, my friends typically are baffled by how they somehow thought this movie was so good.

the sets and special effects are quite impressive, especially for its time.

everything else is horrible. tonally, it's a complete mess. the movie will start doing a decent job at actually attempting to be scary, then you get some completely nonsense like this scene:

which completes deflates all the horror/scare factor it was working to build up

anyways, movie is NOT a masterpiece. don't believe me, re-watch it.

I think you're missing the appeal. Event Horizon is knowingly slightly schlocky.
Its derivative as hell but it does just enough at every level to earn its own identity, and be fun in the process.

Its a really cool "Haunted House In Space" horror movie, with killer art-direction.

Gotta stress how effective the design and cinematography is. I rewatched the movie earlier today and damn that gravity drive core set is still impressive!

Still love it!

What time is it?
Bender, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk. There is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment.

Event Horizon is an amazing movie...if you are 12...and if it is the only movie you ever seen.

yup, the movie is definitely a fun watch. it might be a little ham sometimes but it's an overall a strong film in my opinion.

OT but are there any videos or articles that explain Warhammer to a complete noob that you can point to? I've seen you bring up Warhammer before. I'm completely oblivious to that universe outside of dabbling in a few of the games. I think I played that gears-like game when it came out. I like a lot of the designs I've seen. The ships look cool. I'm also really impressed at the scale of some of it. Lots of skulls lol.

plenty of folks had already gave you some great info on WH40K. I'll just leave these 2 more light hearted glimpse into the grim dark universe by Bricky.

Some of the dialogue is super great too, and some of it really sells the Lovecraft-lite element.

”I created the Event Horizon to reach the stars…but she’s gone much, much further than that.”
”You know nothing. ’Hell’ is only a word. The reality is much, much worse.”

My favourite shall forever be Sean Pertwee's "This ship, is fucked"! Classic!

The cast is pretty much perfect imho. They obviously don't get a huge amount of development time over the short 96mins, but everyone gets just enough to make an impression.
Richard T. Jones gets a lot of stick as the comedy relief, but in my opinion its very much needed to give the audience a pressure valve in such a dark tale.
If anything some people at the time still found it too intense to be fun!

The film had troubled production, so it was rushed to release and a lot of recycled stock sounds from more than a decade prior were used, for things like explosions, etc, so it did not feel "with the times" if that makes sense. There are two DOOM sounds as an Easter Egg as well I believe.

Having restored scenes so the film made more cohesive sense would be a plus as well. This movie is dying for a director's cut.

Oh, it died alright :(

The cut scenes of hell actually featured real porn stars but was deemed too graphic as the scenes included wild sex mixed with people impaling each other and other weird shit.

How the deleted scenes ended up in a transylvania salt mine and allowed to deteriorate to such a state that it can never be used is just bizarre.

  • The original cut was 120 minutes.
  • Someone in the test audience for the 120 minute cut fainted.
  • Deleted scenes include more background on character's fears. More gore, cannibalism, and sexual behavior in the famous scene showing what happened to the previous crew. Some porn stars were hired for the sexual stuff. Demonic Dr. Weir crawling down a ladder like a spider, fully naked, and carved up with demonic patters in his skin from head to toe.
  • Executives made him cut it down to 90 minutes due to it being to intense/gory and concerns that it would get an NC-17 rating.
  • He had 4 weeks of editing instead of the typical 10 weeks.
  • Stored unused footage in a salt mine. Director went back to get it but it's too damaged.
  • Supposedly one of the producers has the 2 hour cut on tape but isn't sure? This makes no sense. Did you not play the tape? So how do you know it's the tape? Wait what?

I hope there is a directors cut.

Transylvanian salt mine for added flavour.

Demon Claire was sexy, something like that in the scenes could work.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
I’ve seen the beginning, the middle and the end of this film but never in one sitting. Maybe this weekend it’s on Paramount +

The movie is fine, I agree it is overrated. It really has some god awful cheap sounding audio production, that's for sure.
I have it on blu ray and I'm happy with it, I see no need to upgrade to 4K.

Still one of the scariest films I've ever seen. I distinctly remember leaving the theater feeling nauseous and all shaken up, and not sleeping well that night.

My only slight complaint of the movie is, too bad they didn't try hard to "setup" for a potential sequel, or maybe even a franchise.

I mean it copies a lot of ideas from films like Hellraiser, and I think if they wanted to they could have easily done a sequel, since there were characters that did survive.
It would be interesting to see how would humanity deal with the knowledge that the warp drive works, but it opens a gateway to "hell"?
I'm sure they would be trying to exploit the technology anyway, and try to deal with the "consequences".

Still the closest thing we've had to a Warhammer 40k movie, unfortunately.
It is and i still like to think this is humanity first yoage through the Warp. Everything is there. Madness, possesion of the ship. To the letter
The single greatest untapped IP in the entertainment industry.

...that'll never get anything made out of it, because it's waaaaaaay too un-PC to get greenlit in today's climate.
Better stand your ground, high level gatekeeping is underway as the chaos followers try to destroy the fandom.

No, don't go that road.

Shit freaked me out when I was a kid but still enjoy it today. Which reminds me, I need to rewatch Sunshine, barely remember it.

Can’t they just refilm what happened to other crew, add in that briefing scene (looked like it was in good shape), and call it a day?
