TENET is an amazing film, people are more than entitled to their own opinions and the film does have problems (audio mixing, exposition dumps, pacing)
But TENET gets so much so right for me to be able to not ponder over those mishaps so much. I also feel it is actually quite easy to get the plot of TENET compared to some of Nolan's other works.
Going to include my review I wrote on Letterboxd below, no spoilers in it.
An Aesthetically Pleasing Mindfuck Of Epic Proportions:
TENET is a superb film from the bombastic mind of Christopher Nolan which provides all Cinema Junkies their fix after what seemed a lifetime away from theatres following COVID-19.
The pounding score from Ludwig Göransson compliments the outstanding action scenes that take centre stage in this production, buildings are blown up, car chases unfold, and an actual Boeing jet is crashed into a building, all in reverse and realtime all at once thanks to the amazing concepts of Time explored by Nolan and brought to life by the brilliant VFX work in the film.
A Nolan production wouldn't be worthy of it's status without a balls to the walls narrative and Nolan delivers here with one of his most divisive scripts yet, with twists galore and many mind-blowing concepts to get your head around, it's clear this won't be for everyone. Luckily for me it was a spectacular film and it's plot was one of my favourites from Nolan and in my personal opinion one of his easiest plot's to grasp.
The acting in Tenet is a highlight, with a strong performance from the main lead in John David Washington. But the stars of the film for me personally were Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson as Cat and Neil, who both delivered great performances in their according roles. Robert was a personal highlight, stealing every scene he was in with wit and charm. Kenneth Branagh was slightly corny as the main antagonist but he does a good enough job where it's never taking too much focus away from the film itself.
The main problems with TENET for me were it's pacing and audio mixing, the pacing at the start of the film really takes the biggest hit where it just feels like Nolan is trying to shove as much exposition down your throat so they can get to the meat of the film. Scene after scene of brief characters interactions with nothing but expository dialogue for the most part really bog the opening 40 minutes or so but the film manages to sort this out after this point.
The audio mixing especially in the film is a major negative, with the music and SFX being set so agonisingly loud at points that the dialogue is drowned underneath all this which really takes away from the whole experience, the music and SFX would have been set at a perfect level if the dialogue audio was also pushed up higher. But Nolan's recent fetish for a low mix with dialogue makes for a rather empty experience at times.
In conclusion, TENET is not a perfect film but is a superb film none the less with such a strong concept explored to a great effect, with amazing setpieces and performances along with one of my favourite musical scores of recent times, which manage to keep the overall package of TENET a great one despite some issues with it's initial pacing and audio mixing.
